to think WTF?

I have a small holding and keep free range chickens.

Dropping DD at a friends this morn I took a box of our multicoloured eggs as a little thank you. When I handed them over she handed them straight back with a look of absolute disgust on her face and said "Oh, no thanks, I cant eat them when I know where they've been" and made a gipping noise/sick face. I thought it was pretty rude but just smiled and apologised "sorry, I didn't know you didn't eat eggs". She then said "I we eat eggs, but I wouldn't eat those" and turned away. She then opened the fridge to put away groceries she was unpacking and I saw a huge box of every day value eggs from tesco.

I didn't say anything else and left but why on earth would anyone eat eggs from caged hens and not free range eggs?

I gift eggs too, OP. A lot of my friends actually put in cheeky requests for them.

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/04/2018 15:04

SnookieSnooks They offer to pay for them I hope!

fuckingjournocunts · 09/04/2018 15:09

Oh I would love to have chickens but my dh won't let me & I keep saying to him "but think of the lovely free range eggs we'll have" but he won't budge.
You are very lucky op & generous to offer them.

YourVagesty · 09/04/2018 15:12

What a bellend.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 09/04/2018 15:23

@Pyongyang - no, I want to see a picture of them too.

I'd have to ask the 'friend' "What did you mean when I was offering you some free-range eggs that you didn't want them as you knew where they had been? It's been bothering me since you said it and I can't for a moment think what you were getting at." all said with a cheery voice and followed by a laugh.

tillytoodles1 · 09/04/2018 15:26

I've had fresh eggs from SIL's free range chickens, they are so much nicer than shop bought.

wibblywobblywoo · 09/04/2018 15:26

Oh OP you have to ask her what she meant by "where they've been" pleeeeeeeeease Grin

Jadoo · 09/04/2018 15:31

OP your eggs sound so pretty, I'd have loved them! What kind of chooks are they?

NordicNobody · 09/04/2018 15:33

I'm so glad to have learned all these new things about eggs! And I'm now dying to keep my own chickens and grow my own veg. I also want to see a pic of OPs pretty multicoloured eggs!

witherwings · 09/04/2018 15:36

That’s very rude. I have a couple of friends that keep chickens and love it when the donate eggs. I’d have snapped them up.

pictish · 09/04/2018 15:40

Thick as mince and rude as fuck. I’d have been annoyed at that as well...people who are wilfully stupid like that totally grate my cheese. Yanbu.

Likeindie · 09/04/2018 15:45

Chickens chuff! Ha!

Schlimbesserung · 09/04/2018 15:47

I had this exact situation. I obeyed my husband. I did not buy hens. I bought an incubator and several henhouses. We ended up with hens, ducks, geese, quails, turkeys, guinea fowl and peacocks.
I'm thinking of dusting off the incubator again now...

Bramble71 · 09/04/2018 15:52

She clearly didn't care about offending you, so I'd have told her how stupid she was to her face. People like this need educating.

LemonysSnicket · 09/04/2018 16:18

Maybe she thinks the ones in supermarkets are jet washed and yours are covered in shit?

Can I have the eggs? I’d love a super fresh poached egg Grin

elisenbrunnen · 09/04/2018 17:00

schlimmbesserung (love the name BTW!) I'd love quails and guinea fowls! Not the peacocks so much tho Grin

OneStepSideways · 09/04/2018 17:34

I didn't know they can't sell washed eggs. Do they wipe them with a damp cloth or something? I buy free range 'Happy Eggs' from Tesco and they are always clean. Eggs I see for sale at farms always have bits of chicken poo and fluffy feathers stuck to them. I don't like the thought of washing that off and getting traces of poo in the sink.

CircleofWillis · 09/04/2018 17:47

Can we see a photo please OP? Never thought I’d be requesting egg porn online.

LeighaJ · 09/04/2018 17:49

"Oh, no thanks, I cant eat them when I know where they've been"

And exactly where does she think the store brand eggs were before they went into a carton? Grin

BigDamnHero · 09/04/2018 17:57

I used to tutor from home and sometimes at Christmas etc. I'd get a little gift from my tutees (though, I never expected anything).

My favourite was a box of fresh eggs from one tutee's hens. They were amazing!

Foodylicious · 09/04/2018 18:02

I would have been tempted to say "my god, I didn't know people actually still bought eggs from battery hens!"
(I genuinely think this with a pang of sadness every time I see them in the supermarket)

Spangles1963 · 09/04/2018 18:05

Where does she think supermarket eggs come from?!

TerfsUp · 09/04/2018 18:41

Where does she think supermarket eggs come from?!

The Egg Fairy. And babies come from storks. Grin

Gosh what lovely replies. I've been outside with the lambs Smile
Photo on the way. In the meantime here is Vicky

Going against the grain here, but I have a few friends and family who have chickens and some of them I wouldn’t eat the eggs.

Some are kept in lovely conditions, others... eugh.

They don’t collect the eggs regularly so they don’t know how old they are, they have cocks so I’m afraid of finding a part formed chick. The runs are filthy and some of the chickens are often limping or clearly sick. I don’t trust them to have vaccinated them either. They incubated eggs but didn’t check the incubator regularly enough so some chicks died in there. It was really, really grim.

I’m sure your chickens are not like this at all OP, but I’m wary of freebie eggs because of what I’ve seen. I very rarely buy eggs either tbh.
