to think WTF?

I have a small holding and keep free range chickens.

Dropping DD at a friends this morn I took a box of our multicoloured eggs as a little thank you. When I handed them over she handed them straight back with a look of absolute disgust on her face and said "Oh, no thanks, I cant eat them when I know where they've been" and made a gipping noise/sick face. I thought it was pretty rude but just smiled and apologised "sorry, I didn't know you didn't eat eggs". She then said "I we eat eggs, but I wouldn't eat those" and turned away. She then opened the fridge to put away groceries she was unpacking and I saw a huge box of every day value eggs from tesco.

I didn't say anything else and left but why on earth would anyone eat eggs from caged hens and not free range eggs?

They are lovely! (Even sideways.) Grin

TerfsUp · 09/04/2018 18:57

Hello, Vicky!

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/04/2018 19:19

I've gone off them now. I can't stand sideways eggs!

Wink

Well, it makes as much sense as "I can't eat them when I know where they've been" doesn't it?

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/04/2018 19:20

Little Vicky! I want to cuddle her.

WeShouldBeFriends · 09/04/2018 19:40

Oh my goodness that is the cutest lamb I've ever seen and my Mum has a sheep farm Smile

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/04/2018 19:42

The dark brown ones are gorgeous, but I couldnt have them in the house as DD would be utterly convinced that they were chocolate inside!

DameLillyTillicut · 09/04/2018 20:21

Aww Vicky is beautiful! ❤
What a strange woman, OP. I would have been delighted with those eggs and possibly started taking up your chores to ensure a steady supply Grin
I love eggs!

Sugarhouse · 09/04/2018 20:48

How strange Hmm I would be far more concerned about eating value eggs no doubt from battery hens in horrid conditions. Your eggs will taste far superior to anything you can buy in a supermarket that’s for sure

Passmethecrisps · 09/04/2018 20:59

I know what you mean scent. My mum and Dad keep chickens and they are better fed than we were as kids I reckon. Their yolks are the most extraordinary orange.

They know of other people who barely feed them though or who keep them in poor conditions.

missbonita · 09/04/2018 21:21

It's a very very odd thing to keep animals and not love and care for them. No one makes money from keeping hens as eggs are so cheap to buy - so what sort of warped weird minded person keeps hens and doesn't look after them. Same with pets - there are some very odd people around.

Ours are pampered and looked after because it's really not hard to do!

They look like lovely eggs (I'm no oeuf-ficionado).....

Sorry...

I'll get my coat! Smile

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/04/2018 22:21

"They look like lovely eggs (I'm no oeuf-ficionado)"

I love you WhatchaMaCalllit

missbonita · 09/04/2018 22:37

Thanks for that WhatchaMaCallit I'll add that to my repertoire:

un oeuf is e-nough (when you want a lighter breakfast)
(are we having boiled eggs?) - that's eggs-acly what we're having and egg-cellent (when a delicious egg based meal is served to you)

When we kept ducks it took me a little while to get used to eating eggs I'd just collected (and which I knew had just come out of a duck's fanny). Boxed eggs from the supermarket present a sanitised, detached version of the food whereas freshly laid remind you of the realities of the laying process.

numptynuts · 09/04/2018 23:11

Good grief. You'd be my friend for life if you'd brought round such a lovely gift.

Tesco value eggs indeed!

I'd like to keep some chickens and we are currently looking into it now we've moved to the country.

Charolais · 09/04/2018 23:33

In the US where they wash/bleach and scrub eggs they allow caged hens to fester in piles of their own crap then just wash the eggs. The 'no wash' UK law demands hygienic practise and healthy well cared for hens

American hens do not have to be vaccinated for salmonella, although some farmers do. Incase the hens are not vaccinated commercial eggs are washed and refrigerated. Eggs are not bleached here and neither are the hens ‘festering’ in their own crap.

Not everyone buys caged hen eggs, some like the free-range eggs (brown or white) which are also available in the supermarket and so are organic eggs and eggs from vegetarian fed hens. I happen to have my own flock. We have a wide variety of choices here.

SaucyJane · 09/04/2018 23:36

I always keep eggs in the fridge - thinking about it, just because my mother always did!

Your woman here sounds utterly rude and barking. And who the hell buys battery eggs? That's just rank. If the supermarket had sold out of free range, I'd go without rather than buy caged or even "barn" eggs Angry

Your eggs look lovely, Op!

RepealMay25th · 09/04/2018 23:43

And who the hell buys battery eggs?

Most people. Including you as an ingredient in a huge number of products.

CircleofWillis · 09/04/2018 23:48

Love the rainbow egg photo. I felt irrational anxiety about them falling out of their eggs and breaking as they are sideways.

Jamiefraserskilt · 09/04/2018 23:52

Rude and missing out on a delight. Once you taste a fresh free range egg, supermarket eggs are grim.

CadyHeron · 10/04/2018 00:03

Small selection of egg colours complete with a bit of dirt

Those eggs look amazing, can you bring some round here, please?! Grin
Seriously, she sounds bonkers.Don't understand the mindset of buying ones from the shop but not literal fresh ones.
Makes no sense.
If you're squeamish "for real", then don't eat any. Go vegan or summat.

CadyHeron · 10/04/2018 00:04

understand

Triskaidekaphilia · 10/04/2018 00:59

I have a couple of friends who say they always get ill after battery eggs and just knowing that put me off ever eating one again. Your friend is a weirdo and I wish I had a friend with chickens!
