to think WTF?

I have a small holding and keep free range chickens.

Dropping DD at a friends this morn I took a box of our multicoloured eggs as a little thank you. When I handed them over she handed them straight back with a look of absolute disgust on her face and said "Oh, no thanks, I cant eat them when I know where they've been" and made a gipping noise/sick face. I thought it was pretty rude but just smiled and apologised "sorry, I didn't know you didn't eat eggs". She then said "I we eat eggs, but I wouldn't eat those" and turned away. She then opened the fridge to put away groceries she was unpacking and I saw a huge box of every day value eggs from tesco.

I didn't say anything else and left but why on earth would anyone eat eggs from caged hens and not free range eggs?

She's not preggers but yes I would understand that completely.

She's an eejit. I guess she thinks supermarket eggs are somehow cleaned/disinfected or, yes, maybe grown in a lab!

Your hens' eggs sound wonderful and it was a lovely gesture, OP I want some

Trinity66 · 09/04/2018 12:30

She is always extremely groomed with a very clean car/home etc so I did wonder if by "where they'd been' she meant in my car rather than up the chickens chuff

Oh well she's either really rude or really stupid then Grin

Passmethecrisps · 09/04/2018 12:30

She is missing out as they will be absolutely lovely. I honestly didn’t think people bought battery eggs anymore unless they were on their absolute last few pennies.

missbonita · 09/04/2018 12:30

We sell our eggs and the hens are vaccinated and extremely well cared for. They win shows for their eggs and their outstanding beauty.

All the more for me to sell so no problem - just seems loopy to me but maybe thats the explanation.

I'd advise against making sick faces/noises eaten every offered a gift thou - it can be viewed as a bit rude hahaha Grin

She was rude. She should have accepted and re-gifted to someone.

Did the eggs have bits of mud/feathers stuck to them? I don't buy eggs from farms as they always look a bit grubby (I know it's only the shells but they smell of chicken poo and I don't want to have to wash them before they go in the fridge). I would never decline a thoughtful gift though.

ManchesterGin · 09/04/2018 12:32

I’m with you, my car’s interior is probably less hygienic than a chicken’s chuff!

She’s rude. End of.

shakingmyhead1 · 09/04/2018 12:32

in chicken forums they are called easter eggs/eggers they are chicken breeds that have been mixed and they produce eggs with varying shades of blue or green etc, very very popular in chicken forums ( many will post photos of baskets of the multi coloured eggs), i dont even eat eggs but i wanted some when my husband decided i needed chickens for my birthday.... i got brown shavers instead :( they make boring brown eggs

BarbarianMum · 09/04/2018 12:35

Maybe she prefers her eggs with a side order of animal cruelty?

CadyHeron · 09/04/2018 12:36

She's a fricking weirdo.Where the hell does she think eggs come from? Even Tesco ones! Confused Hmm

missbonita · 09/04/2018 12:36

They weren't dirty as I change the nests daily and keep it all very clean. It is illegal to sell a washed egg in the UK so mud/dirt on an egg is a good sign of free ranging birds being allowed time to lay, rearrange the nest and practise all their lovely hen behaviour.

In the US where they wash/bleach and scrub eggs they allow caged hens to fester in piles of their own crap then just wash the eggs. The 'no wash' UK law demands hygienic practise and healthy well cared for hens.

But I digress, she is just nuts, we all agree. I am glad - I was worrying my egg gifting was weird and everyone was making sick faces behind my back! haha

CadyHeron · 09/04/2018 12:38

Ooh,didn't know that about not being able to wash eggs. Really? Every day's a school day.
(Then again, I've never owned hens so I wouldn't know lol)

Eggzandbacon · 09/04/2018 12:41

My MIL would not eat a home grown vegetables as they were ‘dirty’ unlike supermarket ones which I assume were grown in a lab.

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 09/04/2018 12:41

I get it! I get the revulsion 😳😳 it's fucking ludicrous but my friend gives me eggs from her chickens and a little bit of me dies - as I graciously accept them (and eat them) I do KNOW how ludicrous i am though. I think it came from being given some duck eggs and I cracked them open and they smelled awful ... it's put me off eggs altogether.

Ps - I would never buy 'caged eggs'

TokyoSushi · 09/04/2018 12:43

Ridiculous!! I would have loved them!

expatinscotland · 09/04/2018 12:43

She's rude. And stupid.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 09/04/2018 12:43

Her loss! One of my foster carers used to give me eggs every time I visited from her hens in the garden. They looked mismatched and multi coloured - my kids loved getting them
They were fascinated by the 'real eggs!'
This post makes me want to get chickens.

Strugglingtodomybest · 09/04/2018 12:44

I never knew that about the washing eggs, that's interesting, thanks OP.

I wish someone would give me some eggs, you can't beat fresh, home-laid eggs. The other woman was definitely stupid, the question is, how many people at school will you be telling this story to?! Wink

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/04/2018 12:44

I would've been thrilled to bits and very grateful for a box of your lovely eggs, OP. The woman was not only extremely rude, but must also be very stupid indeed.

Juells · 09/04/2018 12:45

I'm not sure I'd want my DD being brainwashed by her peculiar view of life.

Takfujuimoto · 09/04/2018 12:45

That would have made my day OP!
She sounds ignorant and ungrateful, nothing better than some lovely free range creamy scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Trinity66 · 09/04/2018 12:46

I was worrying my egg gifting was weird and everyone was making sick faces behind my back! haha

No! I would love a present like that!

Mumto2two · 09/04/2018 12:47

What a lovely gift. And what an ignorant rude rejection. There is just no explanation for some behaviour.

PancakeBum · 09/04/2018 12:47

Hahahahaha what an absolute twat!!!

Queenofthedrivensnow · 09/04/2018 12:48

Also it was really rude. She could have just said oh that's really sweet but I've just bought eggs and can't use them all.
