to think WTF?

I have a small holding and keep free range chickens.

Dropping DD at a friends this morn I took a box of our multicoloured eggs as a little thank you. When I handed them over she handed them straight back with a look of absolute disgust on her face and said "Oh, no thanks, I cant eat them when I know where they've been" and made a gipping noise/sick face. I thought it was pretty rude but just smiled and apologised "sorry, I didn't know you didn't eat eggs". She then said "I we eat eggs, but I wouldn't eat those" and turned away. She then opened the fridge to put away groceries she was unpacking and I saw a huge box of every day value eggs from tesco.

I didn't say anything else and left but why on earth would anyone eat eggs from caged hens and not free range eggs?

Very odd. Doesn’t she realise your eggs are rare more nutritious?

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/04/2018 13:51

Knittedfairies Shock

PyongyangKipperbang · 09/04/2018 13:53

Anyone else want the OP to post a picture of her eggs?!

GnotherGnu · 09/04/2018 13:54

Print off this article and put it through her door.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 09/04/2018 13:58

She was pig ignorant, both in terms of imagining your fresh eggs were somehow less worthy than Tesco's offerings, and for rudely telling you so.

Clutterbugsmum · 09/04/2018 13:58

I must admit to buying white/blue eggs as my DD2 keeps saying there wrong as they are not brown.

We loved it when my brother used to give us eggs, especially bantum eggs of 'fairy eggs' as we call them.

We won't be getting any for a while as his new neighbours dog got into his land and killed all his chickens.

MonkeyPoke · 09/04/2018 14:00

its nothing personal just that the stamp means the chickens are up to date on vaccines

That is not really what that means. Lion stamp eggs are deemed safe to eat undercooked or raw in pregnancy as they have been fully protected from Salmonella and all eggs, chickens and feed are fully traceable. Any egg is safe to eat it cooked through fully.

64BooLane · 09/04/2018 14:01

Unbelieveable rudeness on her part. Who raised her?!

Mumin2017 · 09/04/2018 14:03

WTF in deed.
Some people need educating. Free range eggs are the best Smile

Nanny0gg · 09/04/2018 14:04

And why are her eggs in the fridge?

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 09/04/2018 14:11

God, seriously?! I think your post epitomises everything that is wrong with today's western society... Sad

MoistCantaloupe · 09/04/2018 14:11

How RUDE. Crazy lady.

Did you actually see her put Tesco value eggs in the fridge though?

MrsHathaway · 09/04/2018 14:14

I don't know what suppliers have to do to earn the 'free range' label, but I would think there is a spectrum of what is acceptable.

My understanding is that to have a "free range" label, the hens have to have access to outside areas. In reality that can be a small door at one end of a massive barn, and the hens might not bother going outside at all, or not be able to make it past the big mean hens nearest the door, etc. So that really isn't different for 99% of the hens compared to "barn" label where the door is shut.

The misty vision of hens merrily pecking at insects in a farmyard is very far removed.

I think "caged" is often referred to as "enhanced cages" which means the cage is at least larger than the hen herself Sad and holds up to ninety hens at a time with some potential for natural behaviour.

Lockheart · 09/04/2018 14:14

What a strange (and rude) person.

I miss my hens :( we had one who laid sky blue eggs and they were so pretty.

MrsHathaway · 09/04/2018 14:14
  • enriched cages
viques · 09/04/2018 14:15

I would have snatched, I mean graciously accepted them from you with pleasure. Clearly she thinks Tesco chickens produce their eggs from a special little surgically clean egg pouch they have tucked under their wings!

Pinkvoid · 09/04/2018 14:20

I think people just believe anything they buy from a supermarket is safe because it’s obviously been through rigorous testing. No company would willingly put their name to something that could potentially harm the public.

I’m not defending her reaction but or saying your hens eggs are dirty or infected but I can understand why people think that way. Her reaction was beyond rude though, can you imagine being given any other gift and reacting that way? Bloody stupid. I would have gipped in return at her caged eggs.

Chrys2017 · 09/04/2018 14:32

Lion stamp eggs are deemed safe to eat undercooked or raw in pregnancy as they have been fully protected from Salmonella

Now I didn't know this! It means I can drag out my grandma's Tirimisu recipe again—hurrah!

Charolais · 09/04/2018 14:34

I dropped off three dozen of my eggs for someone as a thank you. She was due home in a few hours and so I left them on her porch, the weather was raining/cool. She told me later she threw them away because ‘they had been left out’.

VanGoghsDog · 09/04/2018 14:40

I don't even eat eggs, but I would have been thrilled. But then, I'm not a wonk. (and I have eggs for making cakes etc and I don't keep them in the fridge)

newme175 · 09/04/2018 14:43

Oh I would have loved the gift of eggs op, in my opinion fresh eggs taste so much better than shop bought....... but......

I had a similar situation where I friend given me eggs and I was thrilled and ate them, my husband however was the same as your lady! He was saying they not pasteurised, don't know where they from, not to give them to the kids etc....

I told him where to go of course (might be because he was brought up in an inner city?) :)

Crispbutty · 09/04/2018 14:46

I have a friend who keeps chickens and I love it when she brings Eggs. Nothing can beat a freshly laid free range boiled egg. The difference in taste is amazing.

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/04/2018 14:46

newme175 Pasteurised? Shop bought eggs aren't pasteurised either!

Sweetpea55 · 09/04/2018 14:48

I would have snatched your hand off..What a treat to turn down,!!!

HildaZelda · 09/04/2018 14:53

Where on earth does she thinks Tesco eggs come from?
My mother is like this. She won't shop in Aldi/Lidl because 'you don't know what's in their food'. She seems to be under the impression that there are special Aldi cows that make their milk and superior cows that you get branded milk from.
The really funny part of it all? My father is a dairy farmer!
