Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

Don’t buy brands. I buy 2l of lemonade from Aldi which I swear tastes exactly like Schweppes only it’s 33p.

Both Aldi lemonade and Schweppes contain sweetener and are prob not subject to the sugar tax.

If Waitrose stop doing their lemonade I'm going to cry. I love a shandy in the summer

There is a decent but not entirely up-to-date (it's from 2014) article here in New Scientist
I don't think the occasional intake of artificial sweeteners is an issue, microbial communities react and adapt to their environment all the time, even if you have a shift of the community after a can of diet coke it will bounce back but if you keep drinking it you will select for a type of microbe that is associated with various health issues including glucose intolerance and obesity.

Igneococcus · 08/04/2018 09:19

I drink tea, coffee (without sugar, just some milk in tea), water, herbal teas (in summer made with fresh mint or lemon verbena from the garden), also kefir (homemade).
I drink fizzy drinks in form of G&Ts, or Pimms and I drink a can of full sugar ginger beer to help with my hormonal migraines (and if Old Jamaica starts substituting sugar with NAS I might cry) but that is it.
I do eat cakes and puddings but I bake/make them myself. I find most baked goods you can buy to sweet.

Roussette · 08/04/2018 09:20

All of you saying that you don't drink full sugar soft drinks do you drink fruit juice, squash or diet versions? Or is it water only?
I only drink squash (usually Ribena) when I have a hangover like this morning actually. I have an inch left in a bottle of Ribena in the fridge in all its sugary glory, I bought it about a year ago. Won't be buying Ribena anymore. I can't stand anything with sweeteners, ghastly taste on my tongue.
Rest of the time it's water or a cup of tea, two a day.

Don't eat jam unless I have a scone somewhere, don't buy donuts, sweets or choc. I just buy one bag of fruit gums when I go on holiday as a real treat.

I'm prone to putting on weight and luckily don't particularly have a sweet tooth thank god.

Nobingstealingisbad1 · 08/04/2018 09:27

Igneococcus I will have a read of that later, thank you!
I need to kick the habit, I definitely drink more than I should and I am trying to lose weight - I struggle with drinking water and although I buy no added sugar juice it has sweeteners in it. I will look into it more I think and make some changes Smile

sheworebluevelet · 08/04/2018 09:41

You can make your own coke? Loads of recipes online.

Bit like lemonade. I know the point is that it's chemical crap ( I have had two glasses of cola this year, both out at lunch to push through a headache after a night out).
I am amazed that adults drink it regularly too.

whiteroseredrose · 08/04/2018 09:52

Oh no! Not San Pellegrino. That's all we have because it's not too sweet.

We used to have Sprite or 7 Up in Pimms but they've gone to the dark side recently. Was relying on San Pellegrino for this summer 😢.

Kazzyhoward · 08/04/2018 11:02

I am amazed that adults drink it regularly too.

Why? Are you also amazed that adults regularly drink lager and wine? For people who don't drink alcohol, soft fizzy drinks are an obvious alternative.

sheworebluevelet · 08/04/2018 11:15

Kazzy - If you don't drink alcohol, then a fizzy drink makes sense. I'd bet that most who drink pop regularly aren't tee total though.

Lumpolard · 08/04/2018 11:22

I don't think anyone would really make the case that diet fizzy drinks are a healthy choice either, I drink them occasionally but am aware I feel pretty crappy if I have too many in a short space of time. Pretending liquid sugar drinks are somehow better is laughable though.

The problem with trying to tax away obesity issues that everyone needs to eat, and some people have a legitimate need for 3000 calories + a day whereas for others that is gross overindulgence. Targeting the sort of unhealthy crap overweight people consume is probably the best they can do - of the people I regularly see with full sugar fizzy drinks in their hand, I can't think of a single one without a weight problem.

troodiedoo · 08/04/2018 11:27

I would say diet coke has contributed to the obesity crisis more that standard coke.

That and the meal deals in fastfood restaurants.

Lumpolard · 08/04/2018 11:40

Presumably there are studies comparing two groups on calories controlled diets who by changing nothing more than adding diet coke to one group and normal coke to the either, resulted in greater weight gain in the diet coke group?

Kazzyhoward · 08/04/2018 11:46

I would say diet coke has contributed to the obesity crisis more that standard coke.

On what evidence do you say that?

scaryteacher · 08/04/2018 11:46

I bought ds a 24 pack of Vanilla coke this week in my local Carrefour. The vanilla coke in the UK is often the U.S. stuff with the corn syrup, which iirc, is worse than sugar. This is vanilla coke with sugar. He goes back to university next week, and will have a can every so often. He isn't due to complete his MA project til late August, so it should keep him going til then!

Yes, agreed. Coke is not the only fizzy culprit, though. All fizzy drinks are damaging, even water.

Fast food places too.

To clarify, the odd, once in a blue moon fizzy drink or fast food hit or chocolate treat is not going to cause harm. But we all know that, don’t we? Hmm IF you bulk buy any if the above you are placing temptation in your own way. Not a good plan.

Sallystyle · 08/04/2018 12:23

I live on Pepsi max.

I go through more cans than 30 a week. That will shock some.

I drink a can the second I wake up.

I don't agree with the tax.

expatinscotland · 08/04/2018 12:24

'Buy a Sodastream!!!!'

Don't. You can't buy any syrup that doesn't contain those bastard sweeteners.

Lumpolard · 08/04/2018 12:33

Evidence www.forbes.com/sites/quora/2016/09/08/the-awful-truth-about-diet-soda-and-weight-gain-according-to-science/#40e1ea96462f

That is extremely weak and inconclusive evidence, written by someone clearly on a certain side of the fence. For all the raging about how clearly terrible sweeteners are on here, I've yet to see anyone pull out any halfway convincing evidence to back up their claims.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/04/2018 12:37

The hours in the bathroom when I’ve accidentally ingested some of these sweeteners is convincing enough for me! One Halls Soother when I had a sore throat gave me a day off work - most of it spent in the toilet!

pestilentialboundary · 08/04/2018 12:41

Lump nothing is going to satisfy you.

bumblenbean · 08/04/2018 12:45

Buggeroff

Sorry but I couldn’t help but giggle at the one Halls soother incident! 😆

troodiedoo · 08/04/2018 12:49

@Kazzyhoward no evidence, that's why I worded it as my opinion.

Anecdotally, tends to be fat people that drink diet coke.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/04/2018 13:01

I know! I didn’t connect it at first...thought I’d got a tummy bug as well as the sore throat....it was DD that pointed it out to me.......

It does say on the packet about having a laxative effect.... I just didn’t read it 🙄
