Price of coke in Asda

noenergy · 07/04/2018 15:10

Last week I bought 18 tins for £4.15.

Today I popped in and has to check prices again as they were £8 for 10 tins or £10 for 24 tins. I couldn't believe it. Sugar tax or whatever it was certainly stopped me from buying it.

I'm thinking the labels were wrong? I did read them to check quantity and price.

Cani ask why sweeteners are harmful?
I drink Diet Coke (trying to kick the habit at he minute) and I also have them in my coffee but saw up thread they are just as harmful as sugar?

I read an article the other day that said most supermarket own brands have reduced the amount of sugar in their drinks to avoid the sugar tax so eventually Coca Cola will follow suit im sure!

orangesmartieseggs · 08/04/2018 07:54

Love all the posters and their mock horror that people would dare drink more than a splash of coke once a month 😂

Peanutbuttercups21 · 08/04/2018 08:01

It is not mock horror, my horror is genuine Grin

Seriously, 30 cans a week?!

lifechangesforever · 08/04/2018 08:04

So now people who make sensible choices and enjoy a can of FULL FAT SUGARY coke every now and again (non of the carbonated fake crap) are being punished. What's it to anyone else if I want the sugary heavenly goodness?

Wonder if they'll be taken out of lunch meal deals now? Hmph.

Who on Earth calls a can of Coke a ‘tin’??!!*

Six pages for someone to finally pick up on that 😂

Iceweasel · 08/04/2018 08:11

Why do people say 'full fat' instead of 'full sugar'? It's essentially flavoured sugar water, zero fat Confused

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/04/2018 08:14

For fun, as a joke.

Goldenbug · 08/04/2018 08:18

Shirley they mean "I can I can't"?

Achoopichu · 08/04/2018 08:18

I always go for diet drinks so the sugar tax doesn’t bother me one bit, and I have to say that I really don’t like sugary drinks as my teeth feel coated after.

I find it really shocking that’s so many very young kids are having so many - sometimes all - teeth out. Both from a health and cost to the nhs point of view. If the sugar tax improves this it’ll be a very good thing.

orangesmartieseggs · 08/04/2018 08:26

I'm not talking about that, more the ones where people react in horror that people would buy more than one can at a time, or actually drink it in their homes through choice!

For me the biggest concern is the effect that artificial sweeteners have on the composition of the gut microbiome. We know that the gut microbiome plays a big role in how nutrients are absorbed and how glucose is metabolised, although we don't know in great detail yet how this is achieved. There is plenty of evidence now that many sweeteners shift the microbiome composition from Bacteroides to Firmicutes type of microbes. Firmicutes are associated with obesity. This is data mostly from rodents at the moment but I would be surprised if it were much different in humans.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/04/2018 08:34

orange

Not mock horror. Genuinely do not know anyone who buys it to drink at home unless they’re having a party, for mixers.

But now I know.

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 08:36

This sugar tax couldn't have come at a worse time for me. I'm pregnant. I'm sick. I have IBS which is super sensitive to artificial sweeteners. Coke is pretty much my only pleasure atm.

MismatchedStripySocks · 08/04/2018 08:36

Don’t buy brands. I buy 2l of lemonade from Aldi which I swear tastes exactly like Schweppes only it’s 33p.

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 08:37

Definitely recommend checking your local corner shops, who often sell foreign imported Coke (illegally, from multipacks) with all its sugary goodness in tact!

Birdsgottafly · 08/04/2018 08:43

lifechangesforever "Wonder if they'll be taken out of lunch meal deals now? "

Tesco has dropped the 500ml and changed it to a 375ml fizzy sugar drink instead. Other retailers are going to do the same. Over time the will slowly phase it out, unless the public vote with their feet.

Dancinggoat · 08/04/2018 08:44

If the sugar tax is a bad idea what should the government do to prevent obesity because it's a real problem ?

Should there be a very high tax on anything with a high sugar or fat content ?

Education isn't working or is there not enough or the right education.

We've allowed the government to rule our lives because there is a large percentage who have difficulty with eating healthy or having unhealthy foods moderately. They need to do something because it will cause society too much and everyone pays for that.

Schnauzermum2 · 08/04/2018 08:47

20p extra for full fat rather than Diet Coke in Nando’s today. But it’s self service so not sure how that’s going to work!

jamoncrumpets · 08/04/2018 08:48

I'm not actually against the sugar tax, tbh. I'm just pregnant and sick. I'll be less pissed off about it in about ten weeks.

Nobingstealingisbad1 · 08/04/2018 08:48

Igneococcus Thank you, so if I am drinking it as part of a “diet” it could actually be having a very different effect to what I would expect it to do?
It’s very interesting, I am not knowledgeable in the science around how these things have an effect on our bodies. I drink it as it has no sugar in it but it could be having an opposite effect which is quite eye opening, if I understand you correctly!? Smile

noenergy · 08/04/2018 08:49

All of you saying that you don't drink full sugar soft drinks do you drink fruit juice, squash or diet versions? Or is it water only?
As I said before I don't drink tea or coffee.

Sometimes fruit juices have a higher sugar content and as for diet versions I don't like the taste and would be more concerned about the effects on my body of artificial sweeteners.

And what about the likes of jam, donuts chocolate, sweets etc. Can't remember the last time I had a dessert or a bar of chocolate. Think the sugar tax needs to be rolled out to these items.

Those asking who buys 18 cans, it's cheaper. Just as people buy a box of teabags.

Generally I'm a big fan of posh cordial and fizzy water. It has to be posh cordial though, from a glass bottle.

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/04/2018 08:55

Nandos will pay the tax based on the total amount they buy and 20 p is just an amount per person to cover the tax.

I don't know if the law allows companies to profit from the tax, or even make a loss, eg people are charged 20 p, but is the actual amount of tax due 5 p, 20 p or 30 p based on what the average person consumes?

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/04/2018 08:56

It might be cheaper to buy 18 cans, but only if you drink it relatively quickly. That would last about 2 years here.

Iceweasel · 08/04/2018 09:01

I drink coffee with whole milk and no sugar, rosehip or other infusions, water, and sugar free soft drink with a meal when out.
