i need a rant!

Driving home down a major motorway a few weeks ago, there are temporary speed cameras and a 50mph speed limit all the way down it. it’s been like this for quite a long time, so it’s not a new thing. A car behind me was driving right up to my bumper and intermittently flashing me, presumably telling me to speed up (even though i was driving at probably just over 50) i ignored but felt really angry and just thought...what a dick head.

Driving down the same motorway tonight (my friend driving this time) exact same situation! a lorry this time, driving along flashing us, when we ignored him he eventually undertook in the slow lane.

I just don’t understand, how you can have the nerve to flash another driver when they’re going the speed limit, and also, to be arrogant enough to think that the other driver is going to think ‘oh no, somebody is flashing me, i better speed up!’

Am i missing something here? Do you not need to stick to the speed limits on motorways with temporary speed limits?!

albus Grin your response made me really laugh. That is so text book how one assumes the mentality of a sense of superiority comes over with so many who drive these cars so thanks for showing your superficial colours. Actually that comment is so far off the mark but I don't feel the need to discuss my financial situation with you. I love the way bang on q the drivers of these vehicles leap to defend themselves 😁. There are regularly threads on here about the pita a lot of these drivers are. You all chose to ignore the fact I didn't say ALL that drive these but there is a disproportionately high amount of arrogant types that gravitate to driving these cars. Btw dear no I am not jealous of your supposed wealth. These can be leased pretty cheaply too. I often see these cars in the drives of homes that may have cost less than the car 😂.

SauvignonBlanche · 07/04/2018 14:25

YABU OP, tailgaters are annoying but middle lane hoggers are infuriating.

Keep Left and let the police control the speed limits, that’s not your fucking job!

Glug44 · 07/04/2018 14:27

It sounds like you are a middle lane hog.

PoorYorick · 07/04/2018 14:31

Middle lane hoggers cause congestion and are hazardous.

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2018 14:41

She wasn’t middle lane jogging, she was in the correct lane for staying on the motorway and not filtering off to another route.

swingofthings · 07/04/2018 14:42

There are arrogant drivers, they are absent-minded drivers, there are lazy drivers (FGS used your indicators, it won't give your hand a cramp!), there are oblivious drivers and there are over anxious drivers who seem to petrified, I want to stop them and give them a hug!

All the above (and more) are bad drivers, yet the focus always seem to be on the arrogant assumed to be rich drivers!

SoupDragon · 07/04/2018 14:49

You were definitely a middle lane hogger. No, others shouldn’t have been going over 50 but what speed they drive at is not your concern. You should have been in the inside lane as you were slower than them.

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 14:52

You were driving in the wrong lane. You must drive in the left lane unless you are overtaking.

blaaake · 07/04/2018 14:53

You should have been in the left hand lane. You were middle lane hogging, which is illegal and incredibly frustrating. YABU

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 14:54

Read more of your updates. Please just stop driving on motorways. You clearly don't understand how they work.

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2018 14:55

The left lane was filtering off to another route though. She was staying on the motorway.

RepealMay25th · 07/04/2018 15:01

I think you're right, it is a form of bullying

No its not. That isn't waht bullying means. The word is so overused on here that it is now meaningless.

It's bad driving. It's not bullying.

swingofthings · 07/04/2018 15:05

The left lane was filtering off to another route though. She was staying on the motorway
Surely not in the instance of the lorry passing her friend on the left as otherwise, the lorry would have just gone off the motorway. If OP didn't realise how wrong this was, she clearly doesn't understand the highway code.

Sirzy · 07/04/2018 15:11

If there is room for a lorry to undertake then even if arrpoaching a filtering junction you have moved out too early.

MadMags · 07/04/2018 15:16

@PuppyMonkey if a lorry was able to undertake, she most definitely wasn’t in the right lane.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 07/04/2018 15:22

I had some taxi twat driving up my arse last night on 30mph limit. Took him ages to overtake me, then pull backed in barely a metre in front of my bumper.

silverbirches · 07/04/2018 15:28

So many good points on this thread, and so much hogwash as well Grin

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2018 15:36

Course it could all be solved with the simple addition of a DIAGRAM. Grin

blaaake · 07/04/2018 15:39

Please just stop driving on motorways. You clearly don't understand how they work.

Grin
Clevs · 07/04/2018 15:56

I think people aren't understanding the road layout. I think I get it so perhaps OP @guiltynetter could confirm or explain better/ post a diagram?

There were 4 lanes. Lanes 1 and 2 filter off to another motorway, lanes 3 and 4 continue on as the current motorway. OP has already stated she was in lane 2, which then becomes lane 1 of the new motorway. Lane 1 of the current motorway I assume then becomes like a normal slip road where you have to indicate and pull out into the traffic of lane 1 of the new motorway.

If that is correct then OP is still in the wrong lane as she is in lane 2 of the slip road onto the new motorway instead of lane 1.

Tainbri · 07/04/2018 16:00

They were absolutely in the wrong tailgating you, however you should have been in the left hand lane not the middle one

Imsosceptical · 07/04/2018 16:09

People need to understand their actions and how it affects others, I was driving over a long bridge crossing a big span of water, I was driving at the speed limit but it was 6am ans pitch black and rather nervy. A guy drove right up my arse, flashed and flashed then over took me and cut me up, I just felt such immense anxiety. I drive over the bridge the next day and had a panic attack half way across and had to pull off at the next junction, I tried that journey 2 more times and same thing happened on the bridge, massive anxiety attacks. I then changed my journey plan which added an extra 20 mins on my commute but a year later, I still cannot drive across that bridge without having a massive anxiety attack, I tried it once mid day with minimal traffic but again panicked. So now every journey I ever make has to factor in avoiding that bridge, so many thanks to the arrogant idiot who was impatient because I drove exactly on the speed limit on the inside ‘slow’ lane and didn’t nothing wrong.

swingofthings · 07/04/2018 16:17

Imsosceptical, have you reported your panic attacks to the DVLA? I believe you should do so legally. It's dangerous to drive when you are having a panic attack.

It's not the guys' fault that you are a nervous drivers. Nervous drivers are very dangerous because their anxiety makes them less alert and more prone to errors. Panic attacks can be as bad as having a seizure.

Imsosceptical · 07/04/2018 16:22

Swingofthings, thank you for your concern, I am a perfectly safe driver, I just avoid that bridge. I will take your advice and report this to the DVLA, I’m sure they will be very concerned about it until they realise I don’t actually live in the UK xxxxxx (so you’re safe, I’m not driving down a road near you but hey, he a considerate driver and remember your road etiquette, it does affect others)
