i need a rant!

Driving home down a major motorway a few weeks ago, there are temporary speed cameras and a 50mph speed limit all the way down it. it’s been like this for quite a long time, so it’s not a new thing. A car behind me was driving right up to my bumper and intermittently flashing me, presumably telling me to speed up (even though i was driving at probably just over 50) i ignored but felt really angry and just thought...what a dick head.

Driving down the same motorway tonight (my friend driving this time) exact same situation! a lorry this time, driving along flashing us, when we ignored him he eventually undertook in the slow lane.

I just don’t understand, how you can have the nerve to flash another driver when they’re going the speed limit, and also, to be arrogant enough to think that the other driver is going to think ‘oh no, somebody is flashing me, i better speed up!’

Am i missing something here? Do you not need to stick to the speed limits on motorways with temporary speed limits?!

A lot of drivers are dicks. They don't care about other peoples safety. I was stuck in traffic going onto the a14. A lorry behind me could see the jam packed traffic, going onto the slip road but still beeped at me!!
He then drove onto the curb, of the round about which made him tilt slightly and I'm surprised he didn't scratch my car. He could have caused a major accident because of his lack of patience and arrogance.

Bojangles33 · 07/04/2018 09:51

OP it doesn't matter what the speed limit is. You should always be in the leftmost lane possible unless you are overtaking. It's not a "slow lane" designated for lorries. You asked why people were flashing and bullying you - you've got your answer, you were in the wrong. Move over.

londonrach · 07/04/2018 09:52

Dont worry the driver making up for a lack of something. I either drive slower or get out of tge way and prefer the idiot ahead of me

SnookieSnooks · 07/04/2018 09:53

Cyclists get similar treatment, especially when cycling up hills. What normally happens is that the vehicle overtakes by skimming past the cyclists elbow, which is obviously very dangerous and also illegal.

malificent7 · 07/04/2018 10:02

Yanbu...i hate it op..i might get an anti tail gating sticker

Greyhorses · 07/04/2018 10:03

Try driving a horsebox. Nightmare!Angry

mum11970 · 07/04/2018 10:05

You should have been in the left hand lane! The lorry is not allowed in the third lane and had ample time to actually undertake you before you reached the junction you wished to exit on, so that flimsy excuse doesn’t wash, therefore you had no reason at all to be in the second lane. If you are not physically overtaking a vehicle keep left for god sake.

PizzaPower · 07/04/2018 10:10

Just going to post the same as mum11970
If the lorry had ample time to pass you in the left lane, then you were in the wrong lane.

swingofthings · 07/04/2018 10:12

Absolutely reddington. There are flashing speed limit cameras everywhere, but how often do we see police officers stopping drivers for poor driving. Then again, some of them as such as bad. I once followed a police car all the way from work to home, passed 4 roundabouts and not once did the police driver indicated to exit the roundabout or worse when he went right!

I do believe is driving within the speed limit, especially in 30 miles zones. I once had a kid jumping in front of me to catch a football and if I'd been driving faster, I would have hit them and maybe injured them or worse.

However, really fed up with those road warriors who never once consider that maybe, just maybe if they are regularly 'bullied' it might just be because they drive badly even if within the speed limit.

ChristmasFluff · 07/04/2018 10:20

OP, it isn't your job to be the speed Police. The highway code is clear - you stay in the nearside lane unless you are overtaking - the other lanes are overtaking lanes, there is no such thing as a 'slow lane'. You were being flashed because you were in the wrong lane, not because of the speed you were doing.

Middle lane hoggers cause accidents because if you are sitting in the middle lane, chances are (as I have witnessed multiple times) they are paying no attention to the rest of the road, just sitting there. When you use the road correctly, you are watching other lanes etc, as you know you will have to pull out to overtake, then pull back in etc. Middle lane hoggers are generally oblivious to what is going on around them, and think they are fine.

If drivers are 'bullying' me, I drive more slowly. To give me a greater stopping distance to allow for them not having any, and to allow them to overtake. They then either overtake or back off, oddly. You might want to try an advanced driving course, because they teach you how to use the road correctly, and how to drive defensively, which requires a lot of alertness and observance. It freaks me the hell out how unconscious most drivers are.

ChristmasFluff · 07/04/2018 10:22

And if it was a 'stay in lane', well, it wasn't a problem to you if he decided to move and then stay in his lane as he undertook you, was it?

19lottie82 · 07/04/2018 10:33

You’re driving in the wrong lane and get upset when people get pissed off at you?

YABU

Maybe they shouldn’t be speeding, but that’s their worry, not yours.

19lottie82 · 07/04/2018 10:35

“No accidents are not caused by middle lane hoggers”

I think you’re missing a comma there!

MLH are still bad drivers and a major PITA!

WinnerWinnerChickenDinner0 · 07/04/2018 10:38

My favourite way to deal with tail gaiters is to use my windscreen wash. If they are too close it gets their windows too
Boy racers tend to be very car proud and don’t like their wax job wet Grin

Tika77 · 07/04/2018 10:40

I do the speed limit in those areas bit have the sense to keep left. As everybody should.

LimonViola · 07/04/2018 10:46

YABVU with your 'why does it matter what lane I'm in, surely they wre all 50mph'. What other drivers choose to do is none of your concern and you come across like you quite enjoy being in the middle lane as you're able to enforce that nobody else breaks the speed limit! Get back into the left hand lane unless you're overtaking and let everyone else drive how they see fit, you're not the traffic police.

MozzchopsThirty · 07/04/2018 10:59

Op does that mean it's ok to cruise along in the outside lane at 70 because it's the speed limit????
NO IT DOESNT!!!!!!!

Drivers like you drive me nuts!!!!

If they want to drive 60 in a 50, let them, and let them get caught
But fgs if you're not overtaking just stay in the inside lane

Grrrrrrr lane hoggers

ForalltheSaints · 07/04/2018 11:00

In answer to the OPs question. They do because they get away with it, and because we still have laws that regard a driving licence as a right, not a privilege. Politicians are scared of the motoring lobby and not willing to change this.

In my opinion there are probably 10 to 15% of people who should not have a licence because of their conduct whilst behind the wheel.

BonnieF · 07/04/2018 11:22

I drive on the motorway every day. Middle lane hoggers are the bane of my life. They cause chaos and congestion. I never tailgate other drivers, but I absolutely understand the frustration of drivers who get very pissed off with the ‘60 mph in the middle lane’ brigade.

Keep Left Unless Overtaking.

It’s a very simple rule, which even the least competent driver should be able to understand. The police should do far more to enforce correct lane discipline.

I agree with others about 50mph sections. Trucks drive at their normal 56 mph / 90 kph limit, at which the drivers know they won’t be fined. I always set my cruise control to match their speed.

ohhereweareagain · 07/04/2018 11:24

Some cars are more likely to attract a certain type with the odd exception. Range rover Mercedes 4x4 Audi bmws all have form for tailgating/bullying driving. I drive all around the uk on a regular basis and this stands out a mile. I must agree that one should drive in the lhs unless overtaking. Middle lane joggers grind my gears Smile

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/04/2018 11:31

Range rover Mercedes 4x4 Audi bmws all have form for tailgating/bullying driving.

This is such patronising bullshit. I drive long distances regularly in one of those on your list and absolutely don't bully or tailgate. If you put a twat in a car it'll still be a twat in a car regardless of brand.

albusFilch · 07/04/2018 12:01

ohhereweareagain

We have a BMW and a Range Rover and I've always suspected that opinions like yours are based on jealousy.

mum11970 · 07/04/2018 12:12

Have driven all makes and types of vehicles from cherry pickers to Bentleys and unbelievably my driving skills do not alter depending on which vehicle I’m in.

ForalltheSaints · 07/04/2018 12:13

I think it is more likely that the bullies and tailgaters choose to buy certain makes of cars, especially larger ones, not that the cars make the bullies.

If I had my way the 4x4s and larger cars would require a separate driving test, which would reduce their numbers I expect. You can manage the north face of the Kings Road in Chelsea with a small car.

MadMags · 07/04/2018 12:18

Neither you nor your friend should be lane hogging, even if you came off the slip into the second lane, you should have moved to the left.

And it’s not up to you to police other people’s speed! I think it’s bizarre that you both sat there refusing to budge and thinking “well we should all be doing 50”.

You just move! And if they want to get caught speeding, so be it.
