i need a rant!

Driving home down a major motorway a few weeks ago, there are temporary speed cameras and a 50mph speed limit all the way down it. it’s been like this for quite a long time, so it’s not a new thing. A car behind me was driving right up to my bumper and intermittently flashing me, presumably telling me to speed up (even though i was driving at probably just over 50) i ignored but felt really angry and just thought...what a dick head.

Driving down the same motorway tonight (my friend driving this time) exact same situation! a lorry this time, driving along flashing us, when we ignored him he eventually undertook in the slow lane.

I just don’t understand, how you can have the nerve to flash another driver when they’re going the speed limit, and also, to be arrogant enough to think that the other driver is going to think ‘oh no, somebody is flashing me, i better speed up!’

Am i missing something here? Do you not need to stick to the speed limits on motorways with temporary speed limits?!

Limonviola, middle lane hogging is easier for the person doing it, but more dangerous for the others. That's the problem with bad driving, people only consider what is less dangerous for THEM rather than others on the road.

frankchickens · 08/04/2018 19:30

50 miles an hour is a difficult speed for Lorries as it often sits awkwardly on their gears

No it isn't. Most lorries are auto anyway these days and have cruise - they just don't want to get off the 56 (90kph) limiter.

IMHO it's a typically stupid UK half arsed idea to set the roadworks limit at 80kph (50 mph) when you know full well all lorries will be doing 90 kph and you aren't going to bother prosecuting a single one for it.

WappersReturns · 08/04/2018 20:27

I'm not sure it's possible to lane hog on a stretch of road with a "stay in lane" instruction is it? Overtaking on such a road isn't allowed Confused

RallyAnnie · 08/04/2018 20:40

They weren't flashing you to go faster, they were flashing you to move over. If they then choose to go faster, that's their problem (to deal with the police) not your problem.

If lane 1 is clear, move into lane 1. Only come out if lane 1 to overtake slower moving traffic and then guess what, move back to lane 1.

You aren't the motorway lane police, your only responsibility is to make sure you follow the rules of the road.

Those of us who drive in the real world know there's a slow lane, a normal lane and an overtaking lane. Anyone who drives differently is either a) a dick or b) a sanctimonious dick.

This post, written by someone who has obviously never read the Highway Code in their life (or if they have, they haven’t understood a word of it) explains the lamentably poor standard of driving on Britain’s motorways.

How do these idiots obtain licenses?

italiancortado · 08/04/2018 21:34

50 miles an hour is a difficult speed for Lorries as it often sits awkwardly on their gears so they often speed through 50 zones.

This is absolute crap!

frankchickens · 09/04/2018 14:02

Agreed

RunYouJuiceBitch · 09/04/2018 14:13

I think the 'stay in lane' signs confused the issue, as it used to be the case that you remained in the same lane throughout the roadworks regardless of speed.

These are less common now - I think they originated in the days when the average speed cameras couldn't track you if you switched lanes, but technology has moved on.

I stay in the left lane through 50mph zones on the motorway because many of the lorries go past quicker and I just leave them to it.

Don't be daft. How can one lane be 'slow' when the limit on all three is 70mph, and how can one lane be an 'overtaking lane' when two of the lanes are used as such.

Give me strength.

LimonViola · 09/04/2018 14:33

RunYouJuiceBitch To be fair I can see why people call it the slow lane, in practice that's what it is as faster vehicles are all overtaking in the second and third lane! So if you're slow, that's where you are driving.

And yes the limit is 70mph all over the lanes but it's a little simplistic to think that means the left lane isn't usually slower traffic, I see loads of people who see 70 as an optional maximum rather than the speed you should be aiming for with all being clear, and it's fine to drive faster than 70 if you're overtaking.

I used to frequent a motoring forum and there was one poster there who was really up himself. He insisted that the most dangerous thing you could ever do behind the wheel was change lanes, so he would pick the speed he wanted to travel at and go in the appropriate lane (according to his made up lane speeds). He would then stay there from the minute he joined to the minute he left the motorway, and everyone else could get to fuck.

He would then call us all "sheep" when we replied, aghast at his poor skills and tell us we were idiots for not knowing when to ignore things like the HC and that he knew better. Shock

Slarti · 09/04/2018 15:13

The middle lane is for driving at 50-60mph isn't it? Wink

ShotsFired · 09/04/2018 15:18

Shock You know exactly who I mean don't you Slarti! And to think I thought your username was just a co-incidence...

RoadToRivendell · 09/04/2018 16:14

Don't be daft. Different types of vehicles have different speed limits.

Jobjobjob · 09/04/2018 17:10

Don't be daft. Different types of vehicles have different speed limits.

Don't be daft, that doesn't mean the lanes have different speed limits! The speed limit for all three lanes is still 70!

I'm afraid, from what you describe, it would seem, that you would indeed benefit from some extra tuition. Please do this before someone is seriously hurt or even killed.

MissDemelzaCarne · 09/04/2018 19:17

It’s not “arrogant” to expect you to move out of the way if at all possible, you have no idea what the driver behind you is doing.

Lacucuracha · 09/04/2018 20:00

We really need US style signs:

SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP LEFT

Lacucuracha · 09/04/2018 20:02

Not everyone will do 50 in a 50 mph zone, it's arrogant to keep them to 50mph.

Just keep to the left!

PoorYorick · 09/04/2018 20:40

We really need US style signs:

SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP LEFT

NO! It should be: EVERYONE KEEP LEFT, UNLESS YOU ARE OVERTAKING. IF THE LANE TO YOUR LEFT IS EMPTY, MOVE INTO IT. STOP BEING A FUCKING MIDDLE LANE DRIVER! YOU TWATS ARE CAUSING CONGESTION AND ACCIDENTS AND FUCKING OFF EVERYONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO USE A MOTORWAY OR DUAL CARRIAGEWAY!

(In America they overtake on both sides and drive on the wrong side of the road anyway.)

SauvignonBlanche · 09/04/2018 21:01

Pretty sure it would be ‘Keep Right’ in the US! Wink

Some knobber shared a photo on FB today of.a driver tailgating on the dual carriageway I take to work.

What they failed to mention in their rant was the photo plainly showed that the left hand lane was completely empty! Angry

RunYouJuiceBitch · 10/04/2018 14:26

Don't be daft. Different types of vehicles have different speed limits.

Don't be daft. You're talking about slow and fast vehicles, not slow and fast lanes.
