DH cooked dinner tonight and had some sausages on his plate along with dinner. I commented on how strong they smelled and asked where he got them. He laughed and said “from the bin”.
Last night I was checking the fridge and at the back found a pack of leek sausages dated April 1st...the pack had swelled right up and bubbles were oozing out the side, so I threw them out. These are what he’s just eaten!
Now he burping away and I can’t believe he’s that thick!
AIBU to make him sleep with a bucket tonight Angry

@weedsnseeds1 you’ve started something now 😂😂. I think £400 a day is the current going rate for consultancy 😂😂

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 22:34

Ideally you let food cool before fridge as it will warm your fridge up. But half a takeaway compared to, say, a while chicken straight out the fridge, probably not an issue.
I let stuff cool in my kitchen all the time, but it's an old house and the kitchen is always cold. New house with efficient heating, not advised.
Olivander I wouldn't have eaten it either and I'm the same, don't seem to get ill even when others eating the same stuff end up suffering Smile

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 22:41

I'm going to subcontract sausage related consultancy to you babyno5 , I have bakery, dairy and fish specialists I can call on.
I'll field weird stuff like biltong or caviar along with meat, ready meals and canning.
We could make our fortune!

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 22:42

Chicken straight out of oven, not fridge.

Weeds I can't pay you but if you're happy for me to work from home I'll do the admin Wink

Homebird8 · 07/04/2018 23:54

Weeds you’re already worth your weight in gold.

VanillaSugar · 08/04/2018 00:05

I love this thread - weeds and baby you are a veritable pot of hygiene gold. Do you know anything about Food Standards Ratings, and if so, if a cafe has a fsa rating of 1 and is currently under a criminal investigation, do you think the public should be told? Not my cafe, I hasten to add!!!

Ketzele · 08/04/2018 00:30

Yes, thanks weeds and baby - really interesting to read your contributions.

My brother got salmonella at a wedding once, and oh boy it was grim. He got discharged in time to be with his dp at their planned home birth, but he wasn't allowed to hold the baby, make a cup of tea or a meal, any kind of personal care, as he was infectious. A really difficult time for them both.

sadiekate · 08/04/2018 02:07

This thread has gone from grim to fascinating!!
@weedsneeds1 What are your views on shellfish - mussels etc?
Also, is it true that no microorganism can survive for any length of time on a dry surface, because of the lack of food and water?

halfwitpicker · 08/04/2018 02:11

Where do stand on reheating rice, weeds?

Million dollar question....

ferntwist · 08/04/2018 04:41

Thank you so much weeds, so good to know!

Ineke · 08/04/2018 05:06

I have eaten plenty of food way past its sell by date but never meat, far too risky ! Wonder why he was rummaging in the bin.

NameChangingAlso · 08/04/2018 06:28

Really hoping weeds might help with this... DH and I disagree (but not unpleasantly - we just confuse each other!) over reheating food for our 13 month old. I thought you had to reheat to piping to kill everything, but then I obviously have to cool it lots. He thought that if you'd be happy to eat it cold, it's just as safe to only warm it through so baby can eat it immediately. Who's right?! Tbh I'm hoping it's him because it'd be less hassle...

snewsname · 08/04/2018 06:50

I think you are right name sorry.

This thread is actually encouraging my morning sickness EnvyEnvyEnvy

CaptainBrickbeard · 08/04/2018 08:20

name I reheated thoroughly. I used to put his bowl in the freezer and then put hot food on it as spread out as possible so it would cool quickly - like warming plates for a roast but in reverse! It is a pain though.

sashh · 08/04/2018 08:35

I would be so tempted to feed him undercooked kidney beans and resume vomit watch.

But then I wouldn't, I'd just think about it and be pissed off with him.

outabout · 08/04/2018 08:43

While we wait for @Magicstar for the latest report I couple of thoughts on rice.
I would think (possibly incorrectly) that quick chilling of rice from a takeaway (divided and put into fridge as quickly as possible) would be OK but if it had spent any great time out should be thrown and start with new rice, the curry (mentioned above) should be fine especially if thoroughly reheated.
Following on, in countries where rice is a staple diet, do/would they discard uneaten rice and start afresh or would they just reheat and eat, as I can't imagine the (OK a stereotype) 'poor' people throwing food away. So are their digestions better able to combat the pathogens that afflict (stereotypical) 'westerners' or do they simply eat it all when fresh?
@Namechangeingalso, I would go for piping and then quick cool as although at 13 months LO 's digestion is getting there in terms of resistance it is best not to risk it for the sake of a few minutes as there is enough around to upset their day anyway and an easily avoided 'bad tum' seems sensible.

magicstar1 · 08/04/2018 08:51

I could start drip feeding fascinating updates about how he's spewing like a volcano...but he's fine Confused
I just don't get it..but I suppose MIL did him a favour leaving all those meals out for days. He makes a huge chilli sometimes, and will leave that and the rice out overnight and all next day, then puts it in the fridge. He must have a cast iron stomach!

Weedsnseeds1 · 08/04/2018 09:54

vanilla I'm not an EHO, but as far as I'm aware cafes etc. have to display their food hygiene rating.
Our local paper quite often runs stories on one star ratings and prosecutions, but we're pretty rural so a lot of our "news" probably wouldn't cause a ripple in a big city.

Weedsnseeds1 · 08/04/2018 09:57

halfwit cool down rice as quickly as possible, refrigerate and reheat thoroughly.
If it's been kicking around on the work surface overnight, with central heating at full blast chuck it out. Bacillus Cereus risk - see previous.

Weedsnseeds1 · 08/04/2018 09:59

namechanging reheat thoroughly then cool down. As PP suggested, spreading it out will cool it quicker or pop bowl with food in another bowl with cold water and stir it around.

Weedsnseeds1 · 08/04/2018 10:07

Sadie you can get all sorts of exciting and exotic illnesses from shellfish.
Paralytic shellfish poisoning, vibrio, hepatitis A, cholera....
That being said buy from a reputable source as there will be testing regimes in place. If you are tempted to go foraging do a bit of research on the status of the water in the area you are collecting from first.
Thorough cooking will kill off bacteria, but not toxins. Toxins from algal blooms can cause serious illness and can stay in the shellfish for a long time - up to two years for some species of clams.
Bivalves are more risky than molluscs as they filter feed rather than graze.
I love shellfish and have never had food poisoning from them, but there's always an inherent risk.
