DH cooked dinner tonight and had some sausages on his plate along with dinner. I commented on how strong they smelled and asked where he got them. He laughed and said “from the bin”.
Last night I was checking the fridge and at the back found a pack of leek sausages dated April 1st...the pack had swelled right up and bubbles were oozing out the side, so I threw them out. These are what he’s just eaten!
Now he burping away and I can’t believe he’s that thick!
AIBU to make him sleep with a bucket tonight Angry

What about if they're more than a bit grubby though? Some of us lately in all this rain have come out really dirty and smelly. I can't put them on my kitchen top like that so have to wash them.

MyOtherProfile · 14/04/2018 08:23

Some of ours not some of us Grin were not dirty and smelly. .. honest!

Weedsnseeds1 · 14/04/2018 09:29

If they are really dirty, wash and refrigerate. Or wash, crack open and freeze for baking and omelettes at a later date.

squishee · 14/04/2018 11:19

Thanks Weeds.

babyno5 · 14/04/2018 18:33

Hehe weeds I’ll make it a bit easier-just sausages and yes let’s go with codeword “ciguatera” 😂

Magicstar1 · 15/04/2018 13:51

@Weedsnseeds1 can I ask for some advice? My mother has a gammon in the freezer with an expiration date of May 17. It’s been frozen from fresh...would it be okay to use? I told her 6 months, but wanted to check. Thanks.

I use any food that’s been frozen in the freezer Magic no matter how long, some of it for years 😳 have never had a problem...

lou1221 · 15/04/2018 14:32

urgh this thread reminds me of the worse food poisoning I've ever had. I was 6 months pregnant and we were on holiday, Park Holidays resort or something like that, ate at the sites restaurant. Had a lasagne, which when it arrived wasn't hot, but because my toddler was kicking off, I just thought eat it and can get back to settle him.

Within 2/3 hours my stomach started churning, had both d and v for 5/6 hours solid. I honestly thought I would end up losing the baby it was awful. Fortunately all was ok with her. Put me off lasagne for nearly 9 year's, now I only ever eat my own and know that it's piping hot.

Motoko · 15/04/2018 16:57

The only problem with food that's been frozen for a long time, is that the quality deteriorates, it's still perfectly safe to eat, but it might not taste as good as it would have if eaten sooner after freezing.

Weedsnseeds1 · 15/04/2018 18:56

magicstar yes, it's no problem. Frozen food won't go off, ever, as motoko said, quality might deteriorate - gets a bit dry, looses a bit if flavour, but it's perfectly safe.

mathanxiety · 15/04/2018 19:11

Weeds - thank you. The raw mussels were in another packet far inside the freezer. I took off the cardboard sleeve the better to jam them into the freezer, so possibly salvageable. I did take a photo of the reheating instructions ('heat from frozen') and after looking up the product on the Aldi website I see 'cooked and frozen' on the pic of the packaging.

mathanxiety · 15/04/2018 19:13

*the cardboard sleeve from the packet in the door (mussels in garlic and butter sauce)..

Magicstar1 · 15/04/2018 19:48

Great...thanks a mil Smile

Never have the shits been more deserved 🤢

PussGirl · 15/04/2018 21:04

I once saw a patient with food poisoning. She though she had got it from some chicken that was "a bit out of date"

How out of date? I asked.

End of May, she said - this was mid August Shock Shock Shock

She admitted it had "smelt a bit funny" but cooked it & ate it anyway! Envy

AlecOrAlonzo · 16/04/2018 03:52

@PussGirl how on earth?! Rank chicken stinks out the whole place like the devil dropped in for a visit!

Greenyogagirl · 16/04/2018 04:41

I thought I’d check mumsnet before going to sleep and it’s now 4.40am because I had to read all of @weedsnseeds comments! Pleeeeeease do a blog Grin

babyno5 · 16/04/2018 18:11

weedsnseeds1 - yep it’s this week! Auditor was on site 7.45 before I even had the kettle on!! Day 1 and no non conformances so far 👍

RadioDorothy · 16/04/2018 18:49

Just musing that I am also in compliance and audit, but not for anything quite as interesting as food safety - I'm in financial services. No one ever asks me to do a blog on how to spot whether or not your financial adviser is shafting you. Grin

I haven't had need to call on Weeds in the last few days, although I do check in on the thread for latest wisdom. I nearly did an emergency post at the weekend when DH was cooking us meatballs and complained that the pan was too small and they wouldn't cook properly...

He carried on and dished them up and they seemed piping hot so I ate them. We were fine anyway - I don't usually worry much about beef but read a post recently about mince being unsafe if left pink!

Weedsnseeds1 · 16/04/2018 19:19

Good stuff babyno5!
7.45 seems a little over eager! I generally aim to include at least one cup of tea within the 30 minute rule. I need it even if the site team don't!

PussGirl · 16/04/2018 20:44

AlecOrAlonzo - yes, quite! It must have been trying to crawl out of the packet.

"Smelt a bit funny" wouldn't have been my description, for sure!

Graphista · 18/04/2018 21:01

Watchdog on now - not directly related to this thread but a feature on Iceland not placing chilled foods in fridges quick enough after delivery made me think of this thread.

Undercover reporter recorded chilled food left unrefrigerated for 14 hours!

Weedsnseeds1 · 18/04/2018 22:20

Doesn't surprise me "graphista*. The big retailers make the suppliers jump through hoops, then abuse the products themselves.
Any consomer complaints are charged straight back to the manufacturer, with an added admin charge on top.

Graphista · 18/04/2018 23:58

I've worked in supermarkets I'm used to a certain amount of laxity but 14 hours?! That's ludicrous!!

Motoko · 19/04/2018 10:01

I listened to a bit on Radio4 yesterday about it. I was quite surprised when they said chilled food could be left out for up to 2 hours safely, as When I worked in a supermarket, it was drummed into us that stuff shouldn't be left out of the cold chain for more than 20 minutes, and if it was, then it should be wasted.

But 14 hours takes the piss. Of course, Iceland sent a statement saying they have robust policies, bla, bla, bla, and basically blaming the undercover employee. But listening to the chat between him and another staff member, it sounded like it was a common problem.
