I have the most stupid DH on MN

DH cooked dinner tonight and had some sausages on his plate along with dinner. I commented on how strong they smelled and asked where he got them. He laughed and said “from the bin”.
Last night I was checking the fridge and at the back found a pack of leek sausages dated April 1st...the pack had swelled right up and bubbles were oozing out the side, so I threw them out. These are what he’s just eaten!
Now he burping away and I can’t believe he’s that thick!
AIBU to make him sleep with a bucket tonight Angry

I feel sick just reading the thread.

ewww.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/04/2018 00:11

I wondered what had caused the fastball thread to re-emerge a while ago. That wasn't nearly so bad (iirc they were in the fridge, not the bin, and intended for consumption albeit by birds)

BlackeyedSusan · 07/04/2018 00:12

my cousin was lucky to survive salmonella poisoning.

I had bad food poisoning and was really ill. took weeks to recover.

gnarlington · 07/04/2018 00:12

😱🤢🤮

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 00:14

Honestly OP, in this case he's probably going to be just fine.
But he really, really, doesn't disserve to be Grin

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 07/04/2018 00:14

Lol that about covers it

magicstar1 · 07/04/2018 00:16

He didn’t handle my food at the same time...he cooked mine first. We don’t have children, and he’ll be very careful washing etc. if he’s sick.
He’s never done anything like this before...I just don’t get it. Maybe he had a brain fart!

Anyway, I’ve gone to bed and left him asleep downstairs. I’ll update tomorrow 😷

🤮

Errol except peanuts sold for bird consumption have far higher levels of aflatoxins and other mycotoxins than permitted for human consumption. On the rational that your average bird ( unless it's a parrot or something) has a way lower life expectancy than a human, so it will have expired of old age long before the liver cancer kicked in.
You'd probably need to consume fat balls over a considerable period before the cumulative effect was significant though.

ObiJuanKenobi · 07/04/2018 00:25

I've just got over food poisoning and this thread has made my stomach churn so badly!!! What on earth was he thinking!!?!

ErrolTheDragon · 07/04/2018 00:30

I've never seen peanuts in a fatball, usually just seeds embedded in the fatty goo aren't they? (These weren't rspb buggy ones!) But I don't think the foolish DH in that case made a habit of eating them.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 07/04/2018 00:35

I'm still laughing at 'human catherine wheel' 😂

Let's hope he's mildly sick just to prove a point (although I reckon he'll get away with it, these mentallers always seem to!) and very apologetic tomorrow. But not too much sick or bumtrust issues because then he'll be even more useless!

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 00:40

Mycotoxins can be found in all sorts of seeds, dried fruit, patulin in apples etc ( but are obviously tested routinely). A couple of fat balls wouldn't do any harm, but countries where those sort of product form a major protein source, such as Ghana with peanuts, the liver cancer rate is very high.
They are an irregular snack item here and can't be imported without certificates of analysis, but bird peanuts and seeds have different permitted levels.

StrangeLookingParasite · 07/04/2018 00:41

OK, I think of myself as being fairly stoic, but even I'm feeling queasy at what he's done.

re this: Why would you be particularly concerned about use by dates on hummus?

I had the worst case of salmonella poisoning ever from bad hummus. I could not stop going out of both ends, to the point that we called an ambulance three times (they refused to come). I know my husband really loves me....

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 00:42

Avoid eating bird seed or nuts on a regular basis Smile

StaplesCorner · 07/04/2018 00:43

In addition to the absolute bollocking you've no doubt given him for being so stupid impress upon him he will HAVE to for the next I'd say 1-2 weeks at least be ABSOLUTELY on top of his personal hygiene especially handwashing and especially in relation to food handling.

I don't think either of these things will/have happened. I really have a sense of humour fail with these sorts of threads - I don't see why its funny at all and if the person isn't ill then its like they are some sort of laddish hero - someone said just upthread that they got a nice meal of sausages as if that made them a clever boy.

So what will you do OP, just laugh it off?

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 00:59

Staples I mentioned previously that the OP' s description suggested lactic fermentation, in which case ( although I imagine they tasted sour and unpleasant), he won't be Ill despite throwing basic food hygiene to the wind.
The bulging packaging thing suggested the sausages are packed under modified atmosphere, in which case FSA guidelines suggest a theoretical Clostridium Botulinum risk if shelf life is over 11 days, but pH drop in this situation would control clostridia.
Without the lactic acid to help, botulism can cause irreversible nerve damage, respiratory failure and death.
Retrieving food, particularly high risk food, from the bin and eating it, even if you cook it first ( toxins from spore forming bacteria are heat stable) is an incredibly stupid thing to do. I doubt OP's husband is a microbiologist and even if he was, he hasn't been monitoring pH drop to ensure spoor formers haven't reached toxin producing levels.
It's a ridiculously thoughtless thing to do and he really should get a bit of basic food hygiene understanding in place.

Faroutbrussel · 07/04/2018 01:01

DH has been known to fish items out of the wheelie bin and annoyingly ask if I 'meant to throw them away'. Never food though thank God.

He also regularly has a midnight snack of frozen sausages cooked in the microwave at full power, no defrosting. Turns my stomach.

PurpleCrowbar · 07/04/2018 01:05

Sod's law says he'll probably be fine.

One of my uni boyfriends had his motorbike nicked. It subsequently turned up, 3 weeks later, complete with his service station chicken salad sandwich in the side pannier, sides blown out almost spherical.

I remember (drink had been taken) finding it hilariously funny that he was proposing to eat it & demanding that he at least breville the bloody thing, which he did.

He was fine. I wasn't. I suspect he gave me the Kiss of Death later that night.

(We're still friends 30 years on, somehow. Just sent him this thread on WhatsApp & he's still claiming 'but the sausages would be fine if they were heated through!' Goodness knows how this man has made it to 50).

halfwitpicker · 07/04/2018 01:15

Oh my god weedsneeds, you are like a proper grown up scientist with all this talk Grin

halfwitpicker · 07/04/2018 01:17

DH once asked me why I'd thrown a pen into the bin Hmm

Luckily that's the extent of his garbage rummaging.

Weedsnseeds1 · 07/04/2018 01:37

I am a proper food scientist, halfwit, not sure I'm a proper grown up though!

worstwitch18 · 07/04/2018 02:08

Eurgh. Yuck.

If there's one thing for you to be grateful for, magicstar it's that he didn't serve them to you as well.

Hope he is okay or minority ill to teach him a lesson. Food poisoning can be very serious.

Izzy24 · 07/04/2018 02:14

I feel as though I never want to eat sausages again (or anything else really).

whatwouldkeithRichardsdo2 · 07/04/2018 02:16

Consequences are key. Make sure he cleans up.

Good luck, OP.
