DH cooked dinner tonight and had some sausages on his plate along with dinner. I commented on how strong they smelled and asked where he got them. He laughed and said “from the bin”.
Last night I was checking the fridge and at the back found a pack of leek sausages dated April 1st...the pack had swelled right up and bubbles were oozing out the side, so I threw them out. These are what he’s just eaten!
Now he burping away and I can’t believe he’s that thick!
AIBU to make him sleep with a bucket tonight Angry

He's going to be ill. When meat has a use by date on it, that is the date, you shouldn't even go one day over.

magicstar1 · 06/04/2018 22:53

He’s having a snooze on the couch....I’ve scrubbed the fridge to make sure nothing else is lurking. I always empty and clean out before the weekly shop, but missed last week as we were using up food from the freezer.
I saw two sausages left on his plate and sniffed them....they smell fine Confused. I’m hoping that he’s not sick (don’t want to face the mess) 🤞🏻🤞🏻, and I think this thread has scared him straight. He seems to realize that he’s gone way too far.

What I don’t get is the retrieval from the bin I don’t get

LeeroyJenkins · 06/04/2018 22:57

See now, I came to offer up my DH, who thought that terra cotta were a rare and possibly endangered breed of orange turtle.

But I think yours wins Grin

SeraphinaDombegh · 06/04/2018 23:00

Nooooooooo Shock what a plank. I am pretty laissez-faire about use by dates on a lot of things but that's just idiotic.

@weedsnseeds1 that is evil genius. I love it Grin

RallyAnnie · 06/04/2018 23:01

The one time I had proper food poisoning was from eating dodgy sausages from a takeaway place. I lost a stone in 5 days and couldn't eat protein for nearly 6 weeks without getting flare ups. The GP suspected salmonella.

Just reading your post has reminded me how very unpleasant it was. Took less than 12 hours to go from fine to could barely walk.

MarthaArthur · 06/04/2018 23:04

Oh my gosh i have no idea what to suggest. Would making himself sick even work as its been in his stomach for ages.

RhinoGirl · 06/04/2018 23:07

Oh no. No no no no. If he is fine tomorrow, he needs to put the lottery on because he will be one very lucky man!

Good luck OP !

Angie169 · 06/04/2018 23:08

yuck ! ! Buy a child proof lock for the bin !
( I am sure he is not smart enough to unlock it )

bluescreen · 06/04/2018 23:09

bluescreen Why would you be particularly concerned about use by dates on hummus?
Listeria, mainly.

littlebillie · 06/04/2018 23:10

Why is it always 4am when the house is freezing and you want to die with pain from your stomach? I think us giving up takeaway food has stopped us having these events. Good luck tonight

bluescreen · 06/04/2018 23:11

Should add I'm not pregnant or TTC, nor is listeria the only risk, but see frex:

WeirdyMcBeardy · 06/04/2018 23:11

I also cannot understand why he fished them from the bin. How unattractive.

Thisimmortalcurl · 06/04/2018 23:12

Christ, I’m so paranoid about out off date stuff . I have spent 6 weeks this year fighting off Ecoli 0157 . Absolutely no joke , 15% mortality rate , all folk in the house placed under public health orders .
You can’t treat it with anything , your immune system has to fight it off .
Mine did not play game at all . I was really very ill.
Although in fairness when speaking to environmental health it seems you are just as likely to get from salad as from meat but and a huge but , 5 days out off date sausages no feckin way !

"He’s having a snooze on the couch....I’ve scrubbed the fridge to make sure nothing else is lurking."

Did you make sure to take the bin bag outside too? Surely he won't go digging in the outside bins for snacks... Confused

Thisimmortalcurl · 06/04/2018 23:14

Oh and it took quite a few days to surface!

ChasedByBees · 06/04/2018 23:16

Oh my god. I’m worried for him. Shock

3luckystars · 06/04/2018 23:17

What are we supposed to do while we wait?

littlebillie · 06/04/2018 23:18

I feel like I am rubbernecking

Springtrolls · 06/04/2018 23:19

I think he's winding you up.
The stench when he was cooking them would have been vile. The stench would have woke others up. Even if you all managed to sleep through it, you would have smelt them when you went into the kitchen.

Uniglo18 · 06/04/2018 23:19

Just make him drink the milk of magnesia and get it over and done with. Your dh has saved himself a fortune in paying for a colonic irrigation. He will have a proper bowel cleanse after eating rotten sausages!

On a more serious note, do you think he needs to get some help about retrieving rotten food from a bin. That's a deep down psychological issue that a professional could help him with. Foxes and animals scavenge rotting food from bins but I've never heard of a human doing so.

Weedsnseeds1 · 06/04/2018 23:20

Listeria grows at low temperatures, so binning for 24 hours would solve that problem. Plus cooking would destroy in sausages.
But reasonable concern for out of date, refrigerated hummus Smile

fuckingjournocunts · 06/04/2018 23:24

I have a really sensitive stomach so this would have floored me. I do however need to lose a stone 🧐 🤣

AtSea1979 · 06/04/2018 23:26

Hope he’s ok. Not sure what would possess someone to get food from a bin.
Maybe he was trying to get out of cooking duties for a while? If it was my DH he certainly wouldn’t be cooking for me again without supervision if he couldn’t be trusted to give you in date food.
