78 pensioner arrested for fatally stabbing burglar in his own home

SShaming · 04/04/2018 12:20

2 burglars break into a 78 year old man’s home armed with screwdriver.

Forces owner into the kitchen whilst one of them goes upstairs.

A fight ensues, leaving pensioner with injuries to his arm and burglary is fatally stabbed. Perhaps with his own screwdriver although this is TBC.

Police arrest pensioner.

On what planet is this right?

Let’s hope police tell him they’re not pressing charges ASAP. The stupid little runts have already wrecked this poor mans final years enough

IIlustriouslyIllogical · 04/04/2018 20:55

Otherwise how do you know without reasonable doubt what happened?

Because 2 adult men went into the house of 2 pensioners, 1 disabled, with a screwdriver at midnight.

What do you realistically think happened?

And you know what, even if the scum was stabbed in the back as he was leaving - that's a bloody good result in most people's eyes!

Clunj · 04/04/2018 21:00

It does sound extremely likely that this is a valid instance of self defence. Assuming that’s the case, I feel sorry for the burglary victim.

But that doesn’t mean the police shouldn’t investigate. I can’t believe that even needs to be said.

Nicknacky · 04/04/2018 21:01

Apparently it doesn’t need said. Repeatedly!!

Nicknacky · 04/04/2018 21:06

Damn iPad. Does, not doesn’t!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/04/2018 21:08

What you or I think realistically might of happened is irrelevant

How do we know he hasn’t got a history of violence himself?

Jobjobjob · 04/04/2018 21:08

That's what initial reports say, and likely it's right BUT we have legal system and it's got to be adhered to for everyone.

Everyone surely has to be questioned to ensure its a true series of events? Hence the arrest and questioning? I'm not saying let a self defence elderly man be locked up. But I am saying question him.

And no I don't thing it's a good result! This country doesn't have the death sentence.

Jobjobjob · 04/04/2018 21:11

Job - So what would you prefer the Police to do

I think the police are doing the right thing! I'm confused by your comment. They should arrest him and question him as they have done.

Fflursan · 04/04/2018 21:16

Oh jobget over yourself. Burglar went to a house where he had no right to be in. Armed with a screwdriver. Fuckinghell he deserves every single pain etched on his body.

Scaring the hell out of a pensioner.

TerranceandPhilip · 04/04/2018 21:17

Where is your evidence burglaries are taken seriously?

Oh I don't know, maybe the 2 or so I attend pretty much every week?

Ok Poirot, The reason the detection and conviction rate is so low for burglaries is nothing to do with the police not taking them seriously. Even the most stupid burglar out there knows to wear gloves. Very very few houses have private CCTV. So without forensic or visual evidence, how would you solve a burglary?

Jobjobjob · 04/04/2018 21:18

@Fflursan get over yourself! Someone was KILLED either in self defence or not. I'm hardly in the minority on this thread am I??

Adrianflank · 04/04/2018 21:20

This is why I have a baseball bat in my bedroom, if I lived in America it woukd be an ar15!

You break into my house, I'm coming at you flying with my baseball bat

Fflursan · 04/04/2018 21:26

Yes someone was killed smd im glad it ain’t the pensioner.

Guy deserves a huge pat on the back.
And i also sleep with a marble rolling pin by my bed and I wouldn’t hesitate in uding it. My home and kids and i will protect it and them with what it takes.

TerranceandPhilip · 04/04/2018 21:28

You break into my house, I'm coming at you flying with my baseball bat

Which unless you're specifically trained and/or have experience in violent situations is more than likely going to be taken from, and used against You- but hey, you go champ.

IIlustriouslyIllogical · 04/04/2018 21:29

And no I don't thing it's a good result! This country doesn't have the death sentence.

That's precisely why this is such a result.

I have no problems with the Victim being "arrested" whilst the police investigate.

But I also have no problem with a thief who is prepared to threaten people with a screwdriver dying. It's really no loss.

IIlustriouslyIllogical · 04/04/2018 21:30

Tosh, tosh & thrice tosh.

Numbkinnuts · 04/04/2018 21:31

Had to be arrested , most likely will be charged then a jury will decide whether it was self defence. Hopefully will not result in a conviction.

Police have no option but to arrest and investigate.

TerranceandPhilip · 04/04/2018 21:32

@IIlustriouslyIllogical

How so?

Jobjobjob · 04/04/2018 21:33

@IIlustriouslyIllogical

Really?

NickyNackyNoodleNoo · 04/04/2018 21:34

I feel sorry for the pensioners wife, what an awful ordeal for her - burgled, scuffle between her husband and burglars, someone dies then her husband is arrested. Bless her she must be very traumatised Sad

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/04/2018 21:35

So you want police to ignore procedure

And then we moan when police haven’t followed procedures and people don’t get the sentence they deserve

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/04/2018 21:52

There is a reason that people are advised to not tackle thieves in this situation and to simply give them what they want.
They just want to come in, take whatever it is they are after, usually car keys or small easily sold stuff, and go again. They dont want to go for you and your kids. But if you go for them then their own survival instincts will kick in (crims have them too, unfair huh?!) and you could end up far worse off.

Its all very well mouthing off Wonder Woman fashion of what you would do if it was you, but is very very different when it actually happens. Trust me.

But hey, if you are happy to get your head put in by your own baseball bat/rolling pin then crack on (pun intended)

^^ yep!

A few years ago there was a spate of burglaries round our way. It was three guys breaking it blatantly when people where in bed. Taunting home owners to challenge them. I have a husband and two sons and I had the following conversation....

I do not care about the tv, the laptop, the jewellery or the car.

They can take them.

I care about you and I want no heroics, no blood, no hurt.

So please promise me you won't fight them!

Otherwise you could

  1. Be in the pensioners position
Or
  1. Worse, be hurt or dead!

It's not right but I'd rather that than my husbands/sons on trial or hurt!

Nicknacky · 04/04/2018 22:04

There was a spate of houses being broken into in my area with high performance cars being stolen with true key.

H was taking his key to bed, mine stayed on the unit at the front door, they can have it if they want it that badly. Property isn’t worth dying for.

penguinsandpanda · 04/04/2018 22:05

Some criminals do want to attack a get a kick out of it. Round here we have had burglaries were they walk in and attack elderly people with crowbars. I've had my handbag snatched, guy could just have grabbed it but no he had to hit me over the head with a crowbar and risk giving me brain damage. Police advised me to carry a knife but just got taxis instead as there's a risk it would be used against you.
