To ask you what your baby's first food was??

DS is 5mo and we are going to start weaning at 6mo. He is already showing a big interest in food and is showing all other signs of being ready so want to try as soon as he is old enough.

I like the sound of BLW and maybe a bit of spoon feeding as well but.. well where do I start? Offering food just once a day? And should I put a few different finger foods in front of him or let him try one at a time? How did you wean your baby?

As you can probably guess by my tone, I am a first time mum so I have no idea where to start!

Banana

WeirdCatLady · 03/04/2018 11:05

Carrot purée, then apple.

PoppyCracker · 03/04/2018 11:06

Banana and carrots

DannyLaRuesBestFrock · 03/04/2018 11:07

Ahh I loved making my little puree's and putting them in the ice cube holders. I think pureed pear was one of the first things I gave dd

Littlejayx · 03/04/2018 11:08

I bought the Ella’s kitchen first foods, so my daughter followed the weaning plan. So veg first, she had purée potatoes with usual milk in ☺️

BarryTheKestrel · 03/04/2018 11:08

Carrots and then apple I believe.

drinkyourmilk · 03/04/2018 11:09

Ice cream! She was in the sling and just face dived in.
Regular food? Was a roast beef dinner. I offered lunch every day for a week, then 2 meals a day for a couple of weeks, then eventually she was on 3. She just turned 1 and she usually eats 2 really good meals and picks or refuses the 3rd.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/04/2018 11:09

Started with veg purees - tried to get her used to bitter tastes not the sweet stuff.
Finger food wise- loves cucumber as quite the teether

SecretBum · 03/04/2018 11:10

I've never liked the sound of BLW so have weaned on purees with all 3 of mine. Firstly with baby rice once a day for a week, then veg or fruit once a day, gradually moving to twice a day then three times a day.

All of mine started weaning at 4 or 5 months so by the time they were 7 months were on 3 meals a day, at which point one of the veg meals changed to one with meat or fish in and breakfast became adult cereals and cows milk.

I'd highly recommend Annabel Karmel if you wean on purees, all of mine are fantastic eaters which I put down to being given everything, using AK as a guide.

MorningsEleven · 03/04/2018 11:11

PFB we went all organic and Annabel Karmel. DC2 had a banana then grabbed a chocolate brownie off my plate. He's still a cake stealing monster.

Aintlifelikethat · 03/04/2018 11:13

We started by just giving her food in the evening when we had our dinner. She had whatever we were having if possible - veg like broccoli, cauliflower, potato etc and pasta was a big hit! Over about a month we increased it to 3 meals a day. To start with she mainly played with and sucked the food but fairly quickly got the hang of it. She’s 8 months old now and hoovers up whatever we have as long as it’s healthy. I do give her yogurt and spoon type food too but try and let her use the spoon herself with me guiding it.

DarkRoomDarren · 03/04/2018 11:13

Sweet potatoes roasted in rather a lot of olive oil and avocado. I prepped loads (stupidly) as I was convinced this was going to be a huge turning point and she’d actually start eating well (poor feeder from day 1). She gummed one bit of potato, had a bit of avocado, which she promptly spat up (she still hates them) and I hoofed down the leftovers. Think I gained about half a stone while BLW Blush!

mindutopia · 03/04/2018 11:18

My first’s first foods were roasted carrots and parsnips, a Yorkshire pudding, and cucumber and melon sticks.

Basically I would start with one meal a day (whatever is easier, probably lunch) and offer some variation of what you’re eating or leftovers from your dinner the night before. Then add in meals once you get the hang of it until you’re at 3 meals a day.

SweepTheHalls · 03/04/2018 11:19

Tomato stolen from my plate for DS, ice cream stolen from mine for DS2 and fromage frais for DD! I did a mix of blw and purees for all 3 depending on what was most convenient at any time.

Wellthisunexpected · 03/04/2018 11:19

cucumber from my salad.

Then some of our shepherds pie, but I don't know how much of that he ate, we did BLW.

TeddyIsaHe · 03/04/2018 11:19

Just don’t wean into baby rice, it has the nutritional value of sawdust. Pointless crap.

Dd had some Greek yogurt and strawberries for breakfast when she turned 6 months. Very cute!

ElfEars · 03/04/2018 11:20

We did BLW. I think at first you're supposed to either do BLW or spoon feed at first to avoid baby choking. As babies that traditional wean learn to swallow first and babies that do BLW learn to chew first. We started with veg the first day then on the second day offered food at each meal time. They don't really eat much at first.

MrsJayy · 03/04/2018 11:23

Baby rice it was just what we did back then we weaned earlier it was meant to be gentle on tummies but tbh it was very binding and had no taste

DrWhy · 03/04/2018 11:23

A failed experiment with baby rice about 5 months. Then a week before 6 months a bit of bread roll he got off my plate in a restaurant! We followed that with a couple of veg purées and it quickly became apparent that he wanted to feed himself so we went to baby led weaning largely (inspired a lot by the BLW book) with exceptions for the odd yoghurt, which really needed a spoon!

LeeroyJenkins · 03/04/2018 11:23

Banana, then sweet potato "chips" , broccoli, carrot. If you're going to do BLW, get the BLW cookbook app. We did BLW and I love/d it. It's brilliant.

Jozxyqk · 03/04/2018 11:25

A slice of watermelon stolen when I wasn't paying attention... I think she assumed that all pink pointy things would taste the same - wrong! The look on her face was hilarious! Didn't stop her trying for seconds though... Grin

gussyfinknottle · 03/04/2018 11:25

Carrot. Mashed and messy. I still have the photo. She still loves carrots.

mycelialnetwork · 03/04/2018 11:26

Dd1 I think had some roasted veg and some strips of chicken.

Dd2 had some green Thai curry (v mild) with rice and raspberries for pudding.

Although actually DH let dd1 lick a dorito at 4.5 months so technically it's that

Don't be scared of blw. You really do just sit them at the table in their high chair while you eat and put some bits on their tray. If they put it in their mouth, great, if they don't, no problem. They learn to manipulate food in their mouths before they learn about swallowing rather than the other way round.

I know lots of people "don't agree with blw" but I loved it.

tautou · 03/04/2018 11:26

I have followed BLW and would recommend it. There is a great facebook page called 'baby led weaning UK' which has loads of support/knowledge/ideas if you wanted to take a look, it might help you decide which way to go. Smile
