DS is 5mo and we are going to start weaning at 6mo. He is already showing a big interest in food and is showing all other signs of being ready so want to try as soon as he is old enough.

I like the sound of BLW and maybe a bit of spoon feeding as well but.. well where do I start? Offering food just once a day? And should I put a few different finger foods in front of him or let him try one at a time? How did you wean your baby?

As you can probably guess by my tone, I am a first time mum so I have no idea where to start!

I did a bit of both purée and baby led weaning.

Dc1 started off with (organic) purée I think it was banana! Sweet potato was always a hit, then we moved to baby led and I’d give bits off my plate.

Dc2 was given a wotsit by dc1 🙄 did the same thing as dc1 but it wasn’t all organic.

DaisyChainsForever · 03/04/2018 13:20

Porridge. He blinking loves it!

AlbusPercival · 03/04/2018 13:22

A samosa, he took it off my plate and tucked in a week short of 6 months.

It was a year ago now and he still likes spice!

thismeansnothing · 03/04/2018 13:24

Toast crust 😂 mmmm nutritious

RoryHatesCoffee · 03/04/2018 13:26

Banana and sweet potato.

If you're starting at six months there's no need to give purees. Gagging is good for them to learn how to eat and they need food more solid than purée to help their jaw muscles get ready for talking. Purees do neither of those things.

Pinkvoid · 03/04/2018 13:27

Banana

Older children were weaned early as per guidelines at the time and so had purée; DD started with baby rice and rapidly realised it was horrid so went on to squashing various fruits and veg/ baby jars/ yoghourt / fromage frais etc .She seemed to take ages to see the point of it all and if I had had a bit more experience I would have put the whole weaning exercise off for a good few months.she was about 9/10 months before she was eating proper solids ie toast/ pasta/ fish/ meat etc.
DS1 stated with jars as we were on holiday in France ... he rapidly graduated to 'normal 'food and was eating soup and bread/ forked up pasta quite quickly . Annoyingly , he gave up breast feeding at 6 months and insisted on self feeding when he was barely capable so I remember watching his weight a bit as he got the hang of beakers and spoons! He learned quickly though.
DS2 was ,thank goodness ,in the era of not having to bother before 6 months and no need for purees . What a revelation... he ate the same as his siblings albeit removing obvious choking hazards. So boiled egg or weetabix or porridge for breakfast, something on toast at lunch eg cheese/ sardines/ soup with fruit or veg to play with on side and normal meal in the evening. In his case he was happy to have some food on the spoon from me , some loaded spoons and some finger foods. I found weaning him much less stressful than the tiny babies and didn't worry if he wasn't keen as he was still at the breast a lot.

I think ds1's first food was baby porridge. Dd's was banana. Ds2's was cucumber.

MollyDaydream · 03/04/2018 13:29

I struggle to remember Blush
DC1, banana or roast parsnip I think.
DC2, I seem to remember some green beans, and pureed carrot.
DC3 it was a chip, followed by pureed carrot or parsnip.

with DD - mashed up roast potato at Christmas dinner aged 4.5mo

DD never did BLW because she was the only baby I have ever come across that never put anything in her mouth. ever. she just didn't have that instinct, which was great from a baby-proofing/safety point of view, but definitely didn't help with the feeding. we basically had to force a biscuit into her hand at 8 months and literally guide it to her mouth for her to get the idea!

I was at a health visitor class with DS and they were asking mums who already had kids how they weaned, I reminded them about DD not putting things in her mouth (had asked them about it at the time)and they all said, yeah that was a bit weird!!

Tigerpaws57 · 03/04/2018 13:47

DS first food was a gingrrnut biscuit at 6 weeks courtesy of 3 year old sister

BaronessBomburst · 03/04/2018 13:48

A cube of potato fried with garlic and chilli. He licked it enthusiastically but didn't actually swallow it.
I did BLW and EBF so just shoved him whatever was convenient/ what we were having. He had the odd pot of shop bought purée too. It was easier and less messy to spoonfeed him on a cross-channel ferry for example, especially as time was short.
He 8 and eats anything now.

KittyWindbag · 03/04/2018 13:58

Pear purée made with pears straight out of the garden :)

Osopolar · 03/04/2018 14:18

I reduced the salt content in mine and DH's meals and just put some on his tray. His first food was a chicken roast dinner :)

Louiselouie0890 · 03/04/2018 14:18

Carrot pureem. After a week or so we did main meals spoon fed and snacks baby led.

HeyMicky · 03/04/2018 14:21

Toast and scrambled egg for both DCs. Started at Saturday breakfast and just gave them a bit of whatever we were having from then on

SaucyJane · 03/04/2018 14:25

Very first tastes were mashed banana, mashed carrot, mashed sweet potato and fish, and baby porridge.

She ate beautifully until about 2. Now it all gets spat or flung about and she demands yoghurt and chocolate (despite both being rare treats) 😡😡😡

stillfeel18inside · 03/04/2018 14:27

Do they still make Sunshine Orange breakfast? My DS1 (now 19) has that - it was soooo sweet in taste, absolutely delicious! He didn’t end up having a sweet tooth at all funnily enough, doesn’t like chocolate etc!

stillfeel18inside · 03/04/2018 14:27

Sorry he HAD that, doesn’t eat it now at the age of 19, that would be a worry

banannabreadforme · 03/04/2018 14:35

Banana

ScruffyTheGuinea · 03/04/2018 14:40

Does it matter that baby rice has so little nutritional value? Isn’t it just basically a milk thickener so baby takes something off a spoon the first few times ? More of a texture thing than anything else ?

ethelfleda · 03/04/2018 14:41

Scruffy I had never even heard of baby rice until mn and it seems very unpopular on here Smile

I'm not planning on trying it anyway.

OP posts:
ScruffyTheGuinea · 03/04/2018 14:43

I always thought it was just meant to be a bland thickener really to mix with milk so that baby had a familiar taste but could get used to a spoonable texture ? Maybe I’m wrong !!

cocobilly · 03/04/2018 14:46

We did BLW and loved it, although it took A very long time for DS to actually eat (as opposed to Just gumming and dropping food on the floor). If you’re interested, I highly recommend Gill Rapley’s Baby Led Weaning book. It explains everything clearly, and I found the explanation of choking vs gagging very helpful (DS gagged a lot on food in the beginning and the book helped me relax and realize this was normal). It’s a lot of fun, enjoy Grin

RoobieDoobie · 03/04/2018 14:46

Home made chicken pie with veg. She wolfed it down 😂
