To ask you what your baby's first food was??

DS is 5mo and we are going to start weaning at 6mo. He is already showing a big interest in food and is showing all other signs of being ready so want to try as soon as he is old enough.

I like the sound of BLW and maybe a bit of spoon feeding as well but.. well where do I start? Offering food just once a day? And should I put a few different finger foods in front of him or let him try one at a time? How did you wean your baby?

As you can probably guess by my tone, I am a first time mum so I have no idea where to start!

Avocado and then an apple he'd chosen himself lol!

coldcanary · 03/04/2018 16:30

1st child: lovingly prepared organic puréed veg from the many ice cube trays I stuffed the freezer with.
2nd child: lovingly offered pepperoni pizza from her brothers plate (she still loves pepperoni pizza 13 years later)
3rd child: if blw is just basically they get what you get and hopefully some of it goes down then yes we did blw..

Just wondering, don't be mean to me, and I can't believe I am the only one who doesn't like messy eaters..... but could this whole BLW thing be the reason why kids start school not being able to handle a knife and fork??

Cutesbabasmummy · 03/04/2018 17:22

Weetabix!

RainbowGlitterFairy · 03/04/2018 17:23

DS I tried jars of ready made baby food, he refused point blank to eat anything, screamed the second he saw the spoon, this went on for weeks. Eventually found he liked bananas, which I just used to peel and cut into chunks for him, cooled boiled potatoes in little cubes, sliced hard boiled eggs and toast soldiers, he refused to eat anything else for years and even at 13 is a really fussy eater.

DD's first meal was mashed potato, mashed swede, sticks of boiled carrot, a bit of roast parsnip and squished up chicken. Her favourites were mashed sweet potato and mashed butternut squash but she mostly just ate whatever we were having, I just took her portion out before adding salt. She's 9 now and has always eaten brilliantly.

Pikehau · 03/04/2018 17:23

All three had broccoli florets at 6m.

Did / doing blw with all although i also encourage self feeding with a spoon from early on after introducing foods. So if we are having mashed potato and stew why shouldn’t baby have a spoon with mash and stew sauce....

I have the following in my head:

“food is for fun until you are one” (I bf so not sure how differs for ff)
If I would eat it baby can eat it
Stopped cooking with salt
Veggies with everything!

and now I am on dc3..... food is no longer a fun journey! It’s a hassle.... I would like to go from 100% bf to “mummy a sandwich/toast dinner please”!! I was just starting to enjoy some guilt free freezer meals with dc1&2!

Neolara · 03/04/2018 17:24

Dc1 - baby rice.
Dc3 - chocolate croissant

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/04/2018 17:26

DC1 apple purée
DC2 a ham sandwich that was swiped and scoffed very quickly Smile

Pikehau · 03/04/2018 17:26

Hi Guildfordmum...... it’s very very messy. Agreed. Frees my hands up though!

However don’t they want to feed themselves anyway around one and make a mess? I just have 6months more of it!!

Dc3 currently having spaghetti as I type.... until they are approaching 2(?) how do they eat this... in its true form?

lynmilne65 · 03/04/2018 17:27

Baby rice ( 45 years ago )!GrinGrin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/04/2018 17:28

Oh and if you’re doing purees and fingers foods, that’s just Weaning not babyled Weaning Smile

GlitteryPoop · 03/04/2018 17:30

GuildfordMum101 My two could use a knife and fork properly far before many of their peers. I've always thought it was probably because of BLW and we got them mini metal cutlery early on (plastic don't cut or prong anything).

Namethecat · 03/04/2018 17:31

pureed veggies, and really liked mashed potatoes and avocado.

Pikehau · 03/04/2018 17:31

Guildfordmum - Both dc1&2 both blw and encouraged to self spoon feed use cutlery really well dd is only 3.5 and is very adept at a knife and fork. Ds 6 does still sneak in fingers here and there but not because he can’t use cutlery.

Yes to pp who said shower curtain and of course an IKEA high chair!!

Kintan · 03/04/2018 17:33

We gave our son a potato, courgette and carrot broth, and pureed mango and banana for a week them moved onto BLW.

@GuildfordMum101 I doubt that very much, BLW doesn't mean no cutlery ever, I'm not sure where you would have got that from. BLW-ers use cutlery as soon as they are able - did your kids spoon feed themselves their purees from day 1 or only start doing so one they could handle cutlery? Exactly the same for BLW-ers.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/04/2018 17:34

Just wondering, don't be mean to me, and I can't believe I am the only one who doesn't like messy eaters..... but could this whole BLW thing be the reason why kids start school not being able to handle a knife and fork?? are you being serious Guildford?

My second was weaned the Babyled way and has excellent table manners. In fact, when she started school she often got stickers for it.

Really can’t see how giving your child food to eat with their fingers as a baby would stop you introducing cutlery when they are old enough to handle it, just like you do with a traditionally weaned baby.

GlitteryPoop · 03/04/2018 17:36

(I bf so not sure how differs for ff)
It doesn't differ at all. My two were FF.

MrsJamin · 03/04/2018 17:36

First child: steamed organic carrot baton
Second child: a wotsit

BalloonDinosaur · 03/04/2018 17:37

DS was weaned in vegetable purée, carrots, peas, sweet potato etc.

He's nearly 1 1/2 now and will eat anything he can get his hands on including cat food given half a chance.

I'm under no illusion that he'll always eat well, but at the moment he's pretty easy.

We've never really given him chocolate/cake/sweets. The time will come, but at the minute we tend to avoid them.

My DSIS basically thinks this is child abuse Grin

Enidblyton1 · 03/04/2018 17:41

Banana, but in hindsight I wish I'd started with vegetables and then moved on to fruit later - they might not have developed such sweet tooths!

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 03/04/2018 17:42

Oh and if you’re doing purees and fingers foods, that’s just Weaning not babyled Weaning

I just KNEW there'd be a BLW purist on before long! Grin Katie Kirby has a hilarious bit on this in Hurrah for Gin.

OP, you dont have to do either BLW or purees, you can mix and match as much as you like (most people do). DS prefers feeding himself but eats things like yoghurt and mash with a spoon (which we hold!).

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/04/2018 17:50

I think the point is that BLW is an actual thing that doesn't mean finger foods.
It's kinda like saying you exclusively breastfeed but give some bottles.

BLW is giving them food and entirely letting them choose, no feeding at all.
I didn't do it, and think it ridiculous but whoever said there's no such thing as a mix has a point.
