To ask you what your baby's first food was??

DS is 5mo and we are going to start weaning at 6mo. He is already showing a big interest in food and is showing all other signs of being ready so want to try as soon as he is old enough.

I like the sound of BLW and maybe a bit of spoon feeding as well but.. well where do I start? Offering food just once a day? And should I put a few different finger foods in front of him or let him try one at a time? How did you wean your baby?

As you can probably guess by my tone, I am a first time mum so I have no idea where to start!

A pear which he grabbed and gnawed on happily. Then corn on the cob, apples, and anything we were eating that he could grab. 2 weeks later he was happily chewing strips of steak with us.

Sorry, the Thai curry consisted of baby sweetcorn, mange tout, carrot QED courgette batons. Easy to grab for babies.

Roast dinner.

We just sat the DC with us and offered whatever we were having from day 1. I've never pureed a thing.

DS did baby led weaning so I let him sit near the table and be present for mealtimes then when he started to get frustrated at wanting the food I'd pass bits to him.

The first thing he ate was a piece of buttered toast, I was having breakfast in a café and it seemed the least messy! Then later that day I gave him a piece of cucumber.

It's just exploring at first so it doesn't really matter if it goes in or not, but I picked things which seemed easy to hold and not a burning/choking risk.

My oldest is 16 so this was rather a long time ago and a lot of the official advice has changed....

But he had a bit of petit filou as the very first thing, then I set about making a zillion purees and freezing them, swapping some with friends etc. Then introduced pasta with those tiny pasta stars you put in soups. In the end I just mashed up what we were eating.

I agree with avoiding Baby Rice - I tried it, he spat it out. That's when I tried something actually tasty (the petit filou) and it worked wonders with getting him interested in food!

When my kids were born we were told to wean from 12 - 16 weeks, which we all did and its made zero difference to whether they are fussy eaters, big eaters, have allergies etc. My boys are over 6 foot, eat me out of house and home and are very sporty!

We did now, big mat for the floor plastic high chair and she was off! Gave her a bit if everything we had and let her try. Their gums are strong!! She now eats most things including curry, chilli etc

I'm currently weaning mine. They are 5 and a half months old. I started around 5 months. Baby porridge mixed with their usual milk once a day then pureed fruit or veg mixed with boiled water or usual milk.. Slowly getting thicker consistency. I bought some little pots and freeze up a load of pureed fruit or veg. Soeirmes a rusk dissolved in milk. Today I am introducing 2 meals a day as well as usual milk. They have dropped 1 bottle a day now... My girl is really good at swallowing but my boy who was tiny is struggling and still pushes food out with his tongue. I enjoy trying them with different flavours.. Their fav things are sweet potatoes and carrots and Swede. Apple and parsnip didn't go down well nor did white potatoes. Good luck have fun with it

This has all been really helpful- thank you! I can't wait to get started. Have already started sitting him at the table in his chair at meal times and giving him a spoon to play with. He seems really keen on it all already.

A piece of orange which DD1 sucked on as her teeth were sore and then about 2 weeks later we started her on mashed butternut squash.

We just fed her what we ate, didn’t do separate meals etc. Some mashed at the start and then just same as us. She’s 20 months now and a fussy bugger at the moment so there are no guarantees in life!

All 3 of mine started with baby rice, then other purees, mashed up bananas, etc.

Broccoli. We did BLW and DD is very eclectic in her tastes, Greek yogurt was a massive hit. She still doesn't eat tonnes but still likes broccoli. I also tried bananas and avocado and she mushed it into the floor with her feet every time.

Then quickly onto blw.

Note that blw doesn't work with every kid. DS simply didn't eat it but DD took to it like a fish to water.

First baby , froze Home made puréeds in ice cube trays . Found third baby in her bouncy chair with chocolate all round her mouth which eldest had fed her ! All three healthy eaters now with cosmopolitan tastes !

Octopus. My little girl was sat on my lap in a restaurant in cyprus and then her little hand darted out and napped a chunk. Straight down the hatch 😂

Next meal I ordered her hummus and pitta bread!

My eldest had loving prepared fruit and veg purée...my youngest had cheese sandwich my eldest fed her 🙄 Interestingly, my youngest is by far the most adventurous/enthusiast eater

We did BLW. The first thing we gave him were sticks of cucumber. The first thing he actually ate was a few days later, and it was a floret of broccoli. At first I just gave him bits of stuff at lunchtimes - a strip of steak or pita bread or a few homemade sweet potato fries with no salt, and then as he got more into food I expanded it to more of a meal, usually a carb, a protein, a fruit and a vegetable. Then once he was really eating well we went to 2 meals, then 3. Now he eats anything and everything!

Baby rice which he refused after 1 mouthful then quickly onto pureed veg and fruit which he was happy with. We offered finger food as well but he wasn't interested that till a year later.

I also followed the Ella's kitchen introduction with veg first but did BLW so it was steamed/boiled/baked veg sticks rather than purée. Followed by fruit at week 2. By week 4, she was having what we were eating. I did spoon feed some things like yoghurt as I had no desire to clean it from my walls but I wanted her to be in charge of what she ate on the whole.

She's now 18 months and is an adventurous eater but doesn't eat a significant quantity at most meals. It is disheartening at times when her friends all eat entire platefuls but she is growing well, meeting all developmental milestones, healthy and happy. I feel parents who attribute their good eaters to how they chose to wean are kidding themselves - 3 of us chose to wean exactly the same way at the same time and one is a brilliant eater, one is more fussy and my one eats well but not much. It's luck what you get but I'm sure once they are out of the toddler stage, things will settle down.

Follow your instinct and don't worry if they don't take to it/eat much. They all get there in the end

Always do veggies before fruit!! Or they develop a sweet tooth and forget it.
