To say how gobsmacked I am by what a friend told me

Yesterday I met with a newish friend and not sure how but we got onto the subject of how she met her husband.

Apparently she was fairly newly divorced and decided to check out the lonely hearts column in the local paper. She marked three as possibly of interest and tried telephoning them. Only one of the three answered the phone and after a chat they decided to meet at her house (I know, HUGE no no) on the Thursday and she would cook dinner.

The date went so well that from meeting on the Thursday he had moved in by the Sunday and they were married less than two months later.

They celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary earlier this year.

I've never heard anything like it, have you? And has it lasted the course of time?

Ouch. I’m just not sure I’d be impressed if I read a story I shared with a new friend on Mumsnet AIBU as general chit chat. I’d think twice about sharing other stories in the future. That’s all.

Married 9.5 weeks after we met. That's nearly 40 mostly happy years ago.

Eveforever · 01/04/2018 17:04

cupoflemontea I like older men, but the chap next door must be almost 90, I'd break him, if his wife didn't get to me first.

cupoflemontea · 01/04/2018 17:05

I think it might be your attitude then eve

Clearly ageist

Andrewofgg · 01/04/2018 17:06

DW and I both visited someone in hospital whom we knew through separate connections. Engaged six weeks later. Forty years ago!

krustykittens · 01/04/2018 17:08

Footle that is amazing!

Myself and my DH met at work, had drunken sex after a Christmas party, he moved in two weeks later, married within a year, still together 22 years later! I love him more than ever and I always give him a big squeeze when I read about some of the appalling relationships people put up with on here. He's a wonderful man and I have never had a moment of regret. When it is right, it's right.

whichwayisitnow · 01/04/2018 17:09

We were distant friends. He came round for a meal and that was it, he moved in pretty much straight away, engaged after several weeks, married 4 months later, it is our 20th anniversary this year.

OldSchoolPhotograph · 01/04/2018 17:10

My parents met and got engaged after 3 weeks and married after 3 months of meeting. They're still together 53 (pretty miserable) years later.

GinDoll · 01/04/2018 17:12

I was a single mum, had never wanted to be married. Met now DH, moved in together 3 months after first date, married exactly a year and a day after first date and still happy... nearly 7 years. Sometimes you just know. My family were floored because I always said I'd never get married 😆

Sushirolls · 01/04/2018 17:14

I met my DH at the local rock club... We "went out" for 3 weeks, broke up for 3 weeks, then immediately moved in together...

4 kids & nearly 30 yrs later, here we are Wink

Footle · 01/04/2018 17:16

krustykittens, thank you. It still amazes the hell out of me.

Katnisnevergreen · 01/04/2018 17:18

I’m always blown away at how quickly people manage to get married in these stories. I booked my venue and caterer 15 months in advance to get the date I wanted, and the church was the same! Luckily it wasn’t a whirlwind romance but a rather slow 6 years before he popped the question Grin

SamandDean · 01/04/2018 17:22

My DH lived in the flat across the hall from me. Didn’t really know him until one day the building fire alarm went off and we all got stuck outside for a couple of hours. Got talking and he asked me to dinner the next day. We thought we’d take it slow so didn’t sleep together for a month, but I fell pregnant the first time we ever had sex! Gave up my lease, moved in together, got married 4 months later and are now happily married with 3 kids, 7 years on.

Scabetty · 01/04/2018 17:22

I met my husband at a party and we didn’t get on. He thought I was gobby and I thought he took himself too seriously. I went on to live with someone for a couple of years as did he. A few years later we met through friends in a pub, laughed about our first impressions. Two months later I was pregnant, 6 months later married. That was 19 years ago.

EnglishRose13 · 01/04/2018 17:27

That's even quicker than myself and my husband.

Met at work. Dated about a month. I stayed over one night and never went home again. Been together 7 years in July.

Footle · 01/04/2018 17:33

You get married quickly by going to a registry office in normal nice clothes, followed by lunch in a friendly but reasonably priced restaurant. There you are , just as married as if you'd spent years planning and saving for it.

Oddcat · 01/04/2018 17:33

Aw , I want to meet someone and get married quickly Grin

LemonSqueezy0 · 01/04/2018 17:34

Met my OH at work, he'd moved in within a few weeks. People thought we were crazy, but when you know, you know. Never felt anything like it. I've never felt so safe, and excited at the same time. Five years on, still feel the same.

bushtailadventures · 01/04/2018 17:35

We got engaged after 2 months, had a baby within a year, still together after 30 years (and 3 more dc). Mind you, we still haven't got married!

DramaAlpaca · 01/04/2018 17:39

My PILS met & got married within six weeks. They were married for 50 years until MIL's death & absolutely adored each other.

Accountant222 · 01/04/2018 17:39

DH was my 'knock off' while my regular BF was in the navy. The navy bf was far too serious, wrote me letters every day, my sister (12) would wait for me to come in from work and we would go into our bedroom and read them and roll with laughter. I finished with him next time he came home, he was wanting to get engaged, I was 19.

I know exactly what NotTakenUsername’s problem is OP, because I would have the same one. You made a new friend who told you how she met her husband and you thought awwww... how sweet! Let me share those specific details in a public forum so if you should read it, you and your closest can all recognise it’s you. Confused

Trumpton · 01/04/2018 17:41

Friends for a couple of years . Met for a coffee . Went on for a quick drink at the student union bar. Got very drunk ( both of us ) . Ended up at his place . Only went back to my bed sit to pack it up. That was 1971 ! Shock horror but still together now . 3 children and 3 grandchildren !
