Help got a situation in Tenerife!

This isn't aibu but I'm needing help and know I will get a high response here.

Basically we are in Tenerife ( costa adeje ) for a week. Myself, dh and ds ( 6 )

Now I know I'm probably going to get flamed here but my ds has got a bit of sunburn along his shoulders and is feeling miserable, cold and shivery. I feel awful. I did the usual things, factor 50 on at all times and reapplied regularly, hat on even in the pool, had a tshirt on in the pool for most of the time, loads to drink etc. We have been to Turkey in double this heat and he was fine with the same measures.

Basically what I'm asking is if anyone knows this area and can recommend stuff to do in the relative shade and not involving water. We have already been to Jungle Park which would have been ideal today.

I don't need judged just helpful advice please.

He needs to see a Dr. That sounds like sunstroke and can be dangerous, especially in kids.

HolyMountain · 01/04/2018 08:58

I’d be worried about the shivering.

Not judging but I’d be also thinking about seeing a medic and keeping him comfortable rather than doing activities.

HuskyMcClusky · 01/04/2018 08:59

Sorry, I don’t know the area, but - he doesn’t need just ‘relative shade’, you need to stay indoors at least tomorrow, I think.

Frazzled2207 · 01/04/2018 09:00

Agree if he's shivery he needs to be seen
Your insurance should cover it and in most cases arrange it too.

Highhorse1981 · 01/04/2018 09:00

Your son is ill and feels crap.

In that situation I would settle him in the room and I would sit out on the balcony with my book.

He needs a good 24 hours rest. No activities. No sun. Lots of water and rest. And then you can also assess whether he needs to see a Doc.

I’m aftaid your holiday must pause for the benefit of your son.

Imnotaslimjim · 01/04/2018 09:00

I think you might need to get him looked at, he may have sunstroke or be unable to regulate his temp because of the heat loss through the burn. Make sure he drinks plenty and get him some rehydration salts.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 01/04/2018 09:01

That is heatstroke. How's your Spanish? I'd take him to a doctor.

Ijustwantabloodyusername · 01/04/2018 09:01

I don't know the area well, but, when I got an ear infection in Costa adeje the hotel pointed us to the nearest Dr, which was basically round the corner from us.

Before you do anything else, I would get him to see the Dr.

MistyMinge · 01/04/2018 09:02

It happens. Don't beat yourself up about it. But I wouldn't be trying to do very much today if he's not feeling well. Calpol and plenty of fluids. Seek out a medical centre if his condition worsens.

llmb · 01/04/2018 09:04

Other than the 4d cinema experience thing on the sea front there isn’t anything I don’t think. Agree with others, that is heat stroke and would stay in hotel room for the day and read/watch tv

dancinfeet · 01/04/2018 09:06

I second seeking medical help for him and stay indoors. Also, you should be able to buy aloe vera gel in the Canaries (was easily available in Gran Canaria) and it is really good for helping to cool and take the sting out of sunburn.

Ijustwantabloodyusername · 01/04/2018 09:06

Following on from Perfectly, the Dr did have a very good understanding of English, but if that fails, there's always google translate which we've had to use recently, as one of us always ends up with infections from the pool waters abroad

Paracetamol

llmb · 01/04/2018 09:08

You can definitely get aloe Vera there as I bought some this time last year for me Grin I can’t remember the name but the mini shopping centre sells it.

Fairylea · 01/04/2018 09:08

If he’s miserable, cold and shivery he doesn’t sound well enough to be doing much. I agree with the others about seeking medical advice.

Frazzled2207 · 01/04/2018 09:09

My dad recently got ill in costa Adeje and the insurers got a very helpful English speaking doc out to him pronto if that helps.
Definitely rest and lots of fluids in the meantime.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 01/04/2018 09:10

I thought of that after I posted Ijustwant. Easter Blush

Missingstreetlife · 01/04/2018 09:10

Lavender essential oil is good for burns, put it in your aftersun or just some plain oil

Psychobabble123 · 01/04/2018 09:10

Also saying doctor, heat stroke can be fatal so I wouldn't risk it.

Grumblepants · 01/04/2018 09:10

FlouncyDoves thats not really helpful and a bit judgy. This can happen to anyone and OP is just asking for advice.

Callamia · 01/04/2018 09:13

Jesus fuck, don’t put neat essential oil on a burn.

In other news, it happens - make sure he is well hydrated, comfortable and do seek out a doctor if he seems unwell.

ScarlettDarling · 01/04/2018 09:13

Yep, you need to get him checked over and then stay indoors until he feels better. He really doesn't sound well enough to be out and about.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/04/2018 09:13

I'd stay indoors today in the shade and monitor him. Give him lots of drinks and calpol and something on his shoulders to cool his skin down.
