Oh Op, you are sooooo brave. I take my hat off to you. I hope that wherever ant is tonight someone tells him about this thread and he'll feel the warm glow of your love. Bless him. Bless you

GnotherGnu · 01/04/2018 07:52

he should be treated the same as all the others - a fine, maybe a ban and points on his licence.

A ban is mandatory for drink driving.

It's perfectly possible to love a person and hate something they have done.

Joanna57 · 01/04/2018 07:55

Could of killed someone?

Surely you mean he could have killed someone.

The man is a prize plonker, no doubt about that.

Stephthegreat · 01/04/2018 08:01

I don’t understand the hero worship tbh,he’s could have killed someone. The problem with elevating someone, putting them on a pedestal is that we allow them to get away with behaviour which is unacceptable for ordinary people.

I think he should retire from the spotlight for however long it takes to get well,I doubt he will though.

1forAll74 · 01/04/2018 08:18

I had a quick look at the show earlier, and Dec was carrying on great as per norm,, so no problems there,, Too much media attention as to what would happen without Ant.. Dec,won't fall to pieces, and Ant will be back at some point I am sure.. I like Ant and Dec, but not the Takeaway show. its much too loud and clappy and shouty and naff and silly for me..

I don't think that Ants problems, and his recent bad happenings will affect his tv career at all, although some say it should do. So watch this space kind of it seems.`

@Joanna57 typo, I'm tired 😑

Neato · 01/04/2018 09:10

Anybody watch Jim Davidson being interviewed by Piers Morgan? He has been, at times, a 'national treasure' (when he hosted generation game for example) and despite all sorts of media storms, has remained in the public eye and gone on to do a lot of good for charity. Does that counter-balance his 'addiction and wife-abusing days'?

It's not as straightforward as one mistake and you're out. People are multi-faceted and mistakes are made. If he had open and true cognitive thought, he would never have made the decision to risk everything by getting behind a wheel under the influence. But he hasn't at the moment. He was clearly vulnerable on the show but was doing what the majority of us do- trying to keep going. It's so easy for people to get caught up in the media storm- a tale as old as time- let's tear down the 'squeaky clean image' of a celeb and use them as a moral marker. He's lost his way. He needs help. He will be suffering for the choices he made. He is not responsible for every drink-driving incident that has ever occurred. He is human and humans fuck up. And then they learn and hopefully reform.

EveningHare · 01/04/2018 09:17

The child is fine, not injured. She was used by the media (and others) as a stick to beat Ant with after the crash.

Yeah, right Hmm

kimanda · 01/04/2018 09:22

@LucilleBluth

I love Ant and Dec too. Obviously he has behaved like a dick, but no-one's perfect and no-one was badly hurt. All this 'but there COULD have been someone hurt!' is all academic. No-one was. I am sure that people bashing Ant are sooooo perfect and have never done anything remotely wrong, or done something that breaks the law. (Cue a shit-load of posters claiming THEY have never done anything yawn...)

And as for all this 'he should be treated the same as any OTHER drink driver' garble... Who on earth has said he WON'T be? Confused

I enjoyed Dec on his own and he was good, but it was not the same. There was no chemistry or banter, and the show felt hollow.

I hope Ant is back soon. He will be in Britain's Got talent, because they have all been filmed already, but he won't be in the live shows.

Hopefully, he will be back for I'm A Celebrity. That will be a dead loss with only Dec on it. No disrespect to him; I'd say the same if it was just Ant. It needs to be the 2 of them.

FabulouslyFab · 01/04/2018 09:22

I enjoy Ant & Dec (the performances) but have no idea what they are like in RL. Even so, because we see them so often in our homes, I feel the same as if it was one of my DC - infuriated that he has done such a stupid thing and concerned that he gets help and recovers. He didn’t kill anyone - he might have, but he didn’t.
I find it impossible to believe that the whole of MN have never driven on the wrong side of the limit, knowingly or unknowingly.

SaucyJane · 01/04/2018 09:31

I can't believe anyone could be so blasé about drink driving as to say, "it's academic that no one was hurt".

That's a truly shocking way to think, and perhaps explains why some people still think it's ok to get behind the wheel after a glass or two Angry

mogulfield · 01/04/2018 09:32

What kimanda said.

Also, I know a guy who drunk drove the day after and he didn’t realise. He waited till midday but was slightly over the limit. He felt fine and he looked fine.
I’m not condoning drink driving but there’s a huge difference between drunk on the night , definitely knew and shitfaced, and slightly over the limit the day after and unintentional.
I think it’s hard to judge until we know what actually happened.

I do not condone any drink driving, when I lived in America the attitude to drink driving shocked and appalled me. Even nice (perceived) normal people who were the desisgnated drivers would get shit faced, it was unbelievable how ubiquitous it was.

ShowerGel9 · 01/04/2018 09:36

Dec did a fabulous job last night. He's a victim in this aswell really. I can't quite explain how tho Confused

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2018 09:38

I am surprised people aren't trying to blame Dec for him letting his friend go drink driving. Guilt by association and all that...

JockTamsonsBairns · 01/04/2018 09:39

@Neato That was a lovely post - the best I've read on the matter. And there have been many!

LucilleBluth · 01/04/2018 09:41

Neato I absolutely agree with you, if he has been in his right mind he wouldn't have got in the car. He's obviously suffering. His actions were not rational due to the disease he's suffering from....addiction.

If you look at pictures of him from November when he was in Australia after rehab and compare them to recent dog walking pics you can see the physical decline, it's actually awful.

I don't care what anyone says, I didn't actually realise until all this happened how dear I hold them both....it may be sad but I can remember reading Smash Hits with my best friend in double physics and getting all excited about the imminent release of 'Why Me'.....in 1994! My musical tastes have matured somewhat since then but I will always cherish my Phych album and VHS. Now my children watch them.

I also think there's an element of class snobbery regarding the glee about his downfall.

OP posts:
AnarchyKitty · 01/04/2018 09:41

Really crap April Fool surely?

ShowerGel9 · 01/04/2018 09:43

The thing is. I have been at rick bottom. Suicidal. I would never have gotten in a car pissed.

Panda81 · 01/04/2018 09:44

@LucilleBluth my music tastes have not matured so much, I had Sean Maguire albums on the other day Grin

ShowerGel9 · 01/04/2018 09:48

Surly he is a victim? He looked generally sad last night. His career might never have the same dynamics now. ...or on the other hand this might be the best thing that has happened to Dec....who knows!

Sparklingbrook · 01/04/2018 09:52

Dec has 60 million in the bank and a baby on the way. I think he will be ok to be honest.

chocatoo · 01/04/2018 09:54

I don't especially like them on tv. They are ok. But I feel compassion for Ant in the same way as I would for anyone who has messed up so spectacularly. He made a huge mistake but we all make mistakes in greater or lesser ways. Thankfully noone was hurt.
Some people on this thread sound very sanctimonious.
We saw part of the show last night and I thought Dec did great.
