To toast my hot cross buns?

I know it's a day late but I'm having an ongoing debate with my mum who insists you never toast a hot cross bun, whereas I think you do. Who's right?

OP posts:
Hippadippadation · 31/03/2018 22:29

Eh? I always toast mine.

Top tip - the apple & cinnamon ones are amazing with the bonne maman salted caramel spread!

Ickyockycocky · 31/03/2018 22:30

Always toasted!

HildaZelda · 31/03/2018 22:36

Toasted with a fuckton of butter - that's the technical term!

bridgetreilly · 31/03/2018 22:50

If they're really fresh, they don't need toasting, but once they are a day or two old, toasting is perfectly acceptable.

DownstairsMixUp · 31/03/2018 22:53

I toast to with butter, proper butter not the crap spreads

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 01/04/2018 01:29

What sort of weirdo doesn't toast and butter their hot cross bun?

Bugjune · 01/04/2018 03:49

Never toast, never skimp on the butter.

Sorry OP but you are being vair, vair U.

EasterRobin · 01/04/2018 04:32

If you don't toast them, surely it's just a "cross bun".

kungpopanda · 01/04/2018 06:57

Best is hot from the oven. Next day, toasted or at least warmed through.
This cheese idea is strangely fascinating. 2 buns left, so can experiment with a one-bun safety margin.. As and when I get out of bed - how about Wednesday? wood for me

kungpopanda · 01/04/2018 06:58

works. Not 'wood'.

MilkyCoffeeAndSkinnySyrup · 01/04/2018 07:05

I heard you have to with lots of butter but guess what.. I HATE HOT CROSS BUNS Shock

Petronius16 · 01/04/2018 11:47

Gorgeous, dripping with butter and honey. Food for the gods.

I wouldn't toast mine when straight out of the oven, but next day and the next (if there's any left!), no problem. Just enjoy.

MyGastIsFlabbered · 01/04/2018 12:36

She's now eating a 2 day old HCB untoasted (but with butter) and says she's got to 74 years old without toasting one and won't start now. Heathen.

OP posts:
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 01/04/2018 12:56

I bought GF HCBs from the supermarket yesterday.
DS2 (5) had his without being toasted - he actually refused point blank to let me toast it. He did let me halve and butter it though.
I, naturally, toasted mine (halved) and then smothered it in butter.

They were very fresh and actually very soft, and would have been nice untoasted - but seriously, the only time I eat one untoasted is when I don't have toasting facilities available! Otherwise, toasted every time.

Redcrayons · 01/04/2018 13:55

DS put Nutella on his. I know, I'll report myself to social services immediately.

RoseWhiteTips · 01/04/2018 14:00

Toasted. Love them though so fine either way. Not a deal breaker if they are untoasted!

CookPassBabtridge · 01/04/2018 14:52

I love them toasted. Some people have weird rules and rituals when it comes to food and won't try it a different way.

Oblomov18 · 01/04/2018 14:58

Of course they are supposed to be toasted!

Crumble67 · 01/04/2018 17:16

This thread is making me hungry 😋 love hot cross buns toasted with lots of butter and jam the sultanas taste even juicier when warm. Must admit I break chunks off sometimes when I’m peckish, they are my one weakness 😏

lashy · 01/04/2018 20:28

I have never eaten one not toasted and thought they existed to be toasted? They are decorated tea cakes surely?
⬆︎Me too...

WingsOnMyBoots · 01/04/2018 22:07

I eat them both ways. I think I actually prefer them NOT toasted thinking about it!

EmNetta · 01/04/2018 23:31

After thirty-odd years living in England, my Dutch friend tells me I'm the only person she knows who toasts hc buns.....Next year I might surprise her even more and let her know my mother used to slice and heat them in the oven (family of 5,eating together, never had them cold ).

augustusglupe · 02/04/2018 09:23

Always toasted with lashings of Lurpak Smile

somersetsoul · 02/04/2018 21:08

Dp eats them as they are. Not toasted or sliced! Totally weird, toasted with butter all the way for me!

Pinkvoid · 02/04/2018 21:35

Is that not why they’re HOT cross buns? Grin
