For me, the Parkland children being belittled and abused in so many ways is utterly heartbreaking to witness. But they have been more adult than the adults in their response. They have shown us what faith means, and bravery. POTUS? He is made much, much smaller.

www.aclu.org/blog/racial-justice/facebooks-targeting-system-can-divide-us-more-just-advertising

'In the spring of 2016, a Facebook executive gave a presentation about the success of Facebook’s then-new “ethnic affinity” advertising categories. Facebook had grouped users as white, Black, or Latino based on what they had clicked, and this targeting had allowed the movie “Straight Outta Compton” to be marketed as two completely different films. For Black audiences, it was a deeply political biopic about the members of N.W.A. and their music, framed by contemporary reflections from Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. For white audiences, it was a scripted drama about gangsters, guns, and cops that barely mentioned the names of its real-life characters. From the perspective of Universal Pictures, this dual marketing had been wildly successful. “Straight Outta Compton” earned over $160 million at the U.S. box office.'

'New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed an order calling out NRA-lobbied states that have the most lax gun laws and contribute to gun crimes across state lines. And the radical gun group is already lashing out.'

From lionheart's Politico link (and who knows how much of this interviewee's claims are actually true).

The secret Twitter rooms of Trump nation
www.politico.eu/article/twitter-donald-trump-the-secret-twitter-rooms-of-trump-nation/

Microchip, a Twitter user who uses several different accounts and is routinely banned from the site, told POLITICO the pro-Trump rooms help him spread racist and otherwise controversial material. His dual aims are to prod the left and entice the media into covering the latest online controversy he helped stoke.
[...]
But Microchip, who described himself as an “atheist liberal that just hates immigration” and transgender people, has open contempt for most of Trump’s base.

“Conservatives are generally morons,” he said. “It’s like herding cats.”

He’s just as frank about what he’s peddling to Trump supporters.

“You know how I know they’re spreading lies?” Microchip asked one die-hard this week. “Because I do the same thing, it’s fake news and spin.”
[...]
“Most of this is contrived to force outrage and trigger new MSM journos to cover shit because they buy the meme,” he said. “They should have already figured this out and stopped covering us.”

Microchip and his crew were giddy at hearing President Trump’s declaration that the military would no longer accept transgender soldiers. In between mulling ideas for inflammatory messaging, Microchip marveled that Trump “is going to force the Left to remain drenched in identity politics through 2018.”

“The Left still hasn’t learned to ignore this trigger game,” he added.

NB the rest of that article is about possible real people using Twitter rooms to organise pro-Trump messaging. Just in case it's tempting to write much of the messaging off as merely a small number of professionals or provocateurs.

Most people in the rooms are not native internet users. Many joined Twitter or dusted off dormant accounts just to stump for Trump. These novices were coached by more experienced compatriots on tending their feeds and cultivating followers. Those who spoke with POLITICO were virtually all older than 35 and predominantly female.

The bit about using social media to bait other media, trigger coverage and force the agenda rings bells for me, because I think I've been seeing exactly this going on.

Either that, or I've got even more cynical and world-weary than I was before...

There is a fire at Trump Tower

Isn’t it more conventional to fire up the shredders when you need to destroy documents?

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/04/2018 00:11

Yes, apparently the Firemen (and women) did a great job

So well done FDNY firemen! Oh. And women.

'After White House Chief of Staff John F. Kelly pressured President Trump last fall to install his top deputy, Kirstjen Nielsen, atop the Department of Homeland Security, the president lost his temper when conservative allies argued that she wasn’t sufficiently hard line on immigration. “You didn’t tell me she was a [expletive] George W. Bush person,” Trump growled.

After Kelly told Fox News Channel’s Bret Baier in a January interview that Trump’s immigration views had not been “fully informed” during the campaign and had since “evolved,” the president berated Kelly in the Oval Office — his shouts so loud they could be heard through the doors.'

boatyardblues · 08/04/2018 00:15

Isn’t the term now ‘firefighters’? Good job, either way - well done FDNY. 👍

One person reported injured though, so alas may be no laughing matter. Hope nothing serious and everyone else in the building safe.

TheClaws · 08/04/2018 00:22

Wasn’t the fire on the 50th floor? Verrry close.

Hmm

www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/south-carolina-secession-us-violates-second-amendment-takes-guns-civil-war-a8294251.html

'South Carolina Republicans have introduced a bill that would give the state capital the power to secede from the United States if the federal government violates the Second Amendment and begins seizing legally purchased guns.

The bill, which went to the state’s House Judiciary Committee Thursday, is unlikely to make it through the legislature this session, but its introduction sends a powerful message at a time when the US is seeing an intense debate about gun control.'

'One twist, however, makes QAnon unusual. Conspiracy theories are usually about evil cabals manipulating world events. QAnon, by contrast, is a conspiracy theory in which the good guys — in this case, Trump and his allies — are in charge. It’s a dream of power rather than a bitter alibi for victimhood. It seems designed to cope with the cognitive dissonance caused by the gap between Trump as his faithful followers like to imagine him and Trump as he is.'

One person has died and certain questions are being asked about sprinklers, fire alarms and building codes. Sad

Sleipnirthewonderhorse · 08/04/2018 08:46

No, no. It's a well built building. Trump said so himself.

One person has died and certain questions are being asked about sprinklers, fire alarms and building codes.

Given what we are learning about Trump’s cavalier attitude to regulation and following the rules, I would now actively avoid staying in any Trump property, particularly the hotels, on safety grounds as much as for moral reasons. The whole brand is tainted.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 08/04/2018 09:05

Everyone has heard of buildings replacing the 13th floor with the "14th floor" in the elevator to avoid superstitions. But what about skipping a whole 10 stories in order to give floors at the top a higher elevator number?

Reminder: the 50th floor of Trump Tower is actually the 40th floor, because Trump inflated the numbers.

That’s not a joke, that’s real.
For everyone who has expressed concern: FDNY requires every building owner to file information on non-sequential numbering. Because Trump started a NY trend.

twitter.com/erinscafe/status/982744663688863744?s=21

That is a move belonging to none other than the noted New York real estate mogul Donald Trump. The Trump Organization claims that Manhattan's Trump Tower rises 68 stories over Fifth Avenue, although databases such as the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats say the tower is only technically 58 stories tall.

Fake tower, fake hair.

Lweji · 08/04/2018 09:50

Inflated floor numbers, inflated IQ, inflated fortune, deflated weight (or was it inflated height?).

'It’s official: The number of women running for the US House of Representatives this year has broken a record, a new analysis from the Associated Press has found.

309 women, Republicans and Democrats alike, have filed candidacy papers to run for the House, eclipsing the previous record of 298 set in 2012, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University that AP analyzed. And that number is likely to grow in the coming months.'
