To think that’s it’s cheeky as fuck to expect other people to fund your skin removal surgery?

My friend had gastric bypass surgery last year after really struggling with her weight since childhood.

She has done amazingly well and lost over 11 stones.

Yesterday, I had a notification pop up on facebook.

My friend has set up a page where people can donate money to help fund her skin removal surgery. The target is set at £6,500.

As someone who has also lost a considerable amount of weight (5.5 stones) and also has some extra skin etc, I find it ludicrous to even think of asking for other’s to fund it. I have told my friend this and she said that she couldn’t think of any other way to raise funds quickly enough.

I worked in healthcare and have seen a few large hanging panabdomens. Skin fold down to mid thigh after weight loss. I can’t even find one one line like I have seen them. People who are in the 400lb range and loose even to the 200lb range should receive ongoing care. Which may after a period of time include some skin removal.
There are magnitudes of weight loss.

expatinscotland · 28/03/2018 18:10

That must be a huge disincentive to losing weight. The ops look horrendous and then leave such awful scars and still saggy skin.

LazyDayToday · 28/03/2018 20:39

I wouldn't have said anything to her if that was my friend, doesn't hurt me for her to ask but I wouldn't have donated to her either.

The NHS shouldn't pay for surgeries like that though, not when they can't even offer some with debilitating physical ailments proper care and not when the mentally ill get put on long wait lists for help while they further deteriorate.

halfwitpicker · 28/03/2018 20:43

Shatner is on the money.

ShatnersWig · 28/03/2018 22:33

If only I was IN the money...

Birdshitbridgegotme · 28/03/2018 22:47

If she was my mate id giver her something towards it even if just a couple of quid. If loads of people just gave her enough that would pass up one coffee or whatever she could have her surgery and it wouldnt put her or anyone else out of pocket too much. She must have a lot of lose skin and that will probably damage her confidence as much as being very big so i would help

But where is this grabby crowd-funding going to end? Ooooh - think I fancy a trip to Japan to see the cherry blossom. Give me the money. I want it.

HelenaDove · 28/03/2018 23:41

"But where is this grabby crowd-funding going to end"

Well thankfully with taxi cab rapist John Warboys staying in prison?

"I’m with you. Don’t agree at all with ‘There’s no harm in asking as long as you’re willing to hear ‘no’’."

Well its a good job the survivors of Warboys attacks didnt think like this isnt it?

HelenaDove · 28/03/2018 23:46

"cambodianfoxhound Wed 28-Mar-18 03:31:37

Also a lot of the comments say 'nothing wrong in asking' 'you can ignore'.. I don't actually agree this. Overtime this is how culture changes and what would once be considered inappropriate becomes a 'cultural norm'."

see above re. Warboys.

Lalliella · 28/03/2018 23:56

The mocking, derogatory posts about obese people should be viewed in the same light as mocking someone with a chronic medical condition.

No they shouldn’t. If someone has a chronic medical condition it is generally not their fault, whereas if someone is obese they are generally to blame. All this fat shaming stuff is a load of nonsense. You overeat and/or you underexercise, you become fat. It’s not rocket science. People need to take more responsibility for themselves and their self-inflicted conditions.

HuskyMcClusky · 29/03/2018 00:03

Well its a good job the survivors of Warboys attacks didnt think like this isnt it?

What on earth are you on about?

HuskyMcClusky · 29/03/2018 00:11

Yes, but what is your point?

HelenaDove · 29/03/2018 00:13

You are the one slagging off crowdfunding so you tell me.

HuskyMcClusky · 29/03/2018 00:21

Yeah, I do not think this:

Two other victims have raised more than $94,000 through crowd-funding efforts to launch a judicial review of the parole board decision

is the same as an individual crowdfunding for themselves. One is in the public interest, one is not.

I do not agree with the general proliferation of crowdfunding for personal endeavours, which is most of it these days. Of course there are exceptions.

But something tells me you don’t deal much in nuance, Helena.

Ivebeenaroundtheblock · 29/03/2018 00:21

the problem is that weight loss information and techniques don't work for everyone. i honestly believe there is something that researchers and scientists have yet to discover.
again when i envision weight loss to the point of needing this type of skin surgery i'm envisioning those over 300 lbs.

HelenaDove · 29/03/2018 00:23

Ah yes the old "oh i didnt mean you" defence.

Nowhere in your posts did you mention there were exceptions.

HelenaDove · 29/03/2018 00:25

I was 21 stone which was 294 pounds. But where i was lucky is i lost mine while still quite young just before i turned 30.

HuskyMcClusky · 29/03/2018 00:27

Oh, don’t be silly. Of course there are exceptions. As to almost everything. I don’t have to outline my entire stance in great detail in my posts. Hmm

HelenaDove · 29/03/2018 00:29

Yet you expect ppl to justify their decisions to use crowdfunding.

HelenaDove · 29/03/2018 01:24

Oh my how things have changed on here in four short years.

YourWanMajella · 29/03/2018 01:40

It changes every minute of every day, depending on who posts. You're not one of those fools who thinks "MN" is some kind of mass identity with one idea on things are you?

HelenaDove · 29/03/2018 01:42

Of course not. still an interesting comparison though.

YourWanMajella · 29/03/2018 01:47

Why?
