How on earth are some people missing the point of MP post.

VileyRose · 27/03/2018 15:58

I think people defend them as feel they are actually like them and on their side...most followers are just a number to these people.

Caitlinsyellowsocks · 27/03/2018 16:02

@pineapplefritter I love seasonaltales, her account is beautiful and she comes across as really nice as well. @meetthewildes have just followed you as well.

I don't follow any of the big instamums discussed here - I did when I first joined but didn't find their feeds that relatable. I still follow big accounts like meandorla but not sure they count as instamums.

PavlovaPrincess · 27/03/2018 16:04

@MarshaBradyo personally, I wouldn't put my DC on social media unless it was set to private. I don't have FB anyway.

I'm just wary of the fact that once it's out there, its out there forevah.

Mumofkids · 27/03/2018 16:06

I've been to plenty of parental online safety discussions in schools, held with teachers and police and the message is do not share your personal details. Kids, do not join social media and put your details out there, then what on earth are these parents doing? And worse still they are doing it for money and fame. It makes no sense at all.

Stellastartsitall · 27/03/2018 16:06

Yes I adore seasonal tales , really beautiful photography. Also thise17life and she's just had the baby! She comes across as a lovely lady and I don't know how she manages to commit so much time to IG considering she works full and seems so busy. She's been really helpful with regards to refurb of her house. Mine is so similar which is why I found her relatable. Im hoping it stays as an interiors account though.

Softkitty2 · 27/03/2018 16:09

It is unregulated but then the people who have the power to do something about it needs to actually do something. Social media didn't happen overnight-- those who regulate child performers maybe need extend their scope to social media children.

But until then these parents can do what they want.

pangalactic personally I agree with you, because as a thinking adult I would like to think I am not easily swayed by social media whether it is disclosed as #ad #gifted or not.

the family that went on the martinhal holiday last year-- I thought it looked great and definitely looked great for families. Did I consider martinhal as a potential holiday destination? I did! But I did my own research and read the reviews on other sites and decided against it for now.

Small brands benefit from the shoutouts.. To the tune of 750k subscribers in exchange for being #gifted a childs top-- that's a good business deal especially for the smaller brands.

Yes some of the items are quite pricey but again as an adult if you cannot afford it you don't buy it.

Consumerism is well and truly present everywhere and people use it to their advantage albeit some questionable.

Fruitbowl2 · 27/03/2018 16:09

blackmirror weare not alone! Lots of people agree - they're probably just not on MN. Look at the comments section of the Hadley Freeman article.

I've gone back to MP's post to look at the replies to MOD.

Hi to casualkiddylan and well said, whoever you are on here 🙌 (and to any others who haven't outed themselves as MNetters)

Anewhope · 27/03/2018 16:11

I have an Instagram account. Not sure if I class as an instamum, my following is low, but I do blog and share photos of my family so perhaps.

I've read all of these threads with interest. I actually follow pretty much everyone who has been mentioned here.

I got sent some Dorset cereal stuff in the post so I did do a picture including it but I wasn't paid for it, so I'm not sure where I stand with that.

I think 90% of my posts are non ads so hopefully I don't piss too many people off. I'm following the child privacy side of things with interest though because it is something im accutely aware of.

Excuse any typos... I'm typing with a big fat thumb while fending off my dog.

Stellastartsitall · 27/03/2018 16:20

That's payment in kind look up ASA guidelines. You didn't buy it yourself. Would you have mentioned it if you did?

Anewhope · 27/03/2018 16:24

Yes I figured as much. I didn't #ad but I did say in my post that I was sent them for free. Is that preferable to a #ad or not?

shesakeeper · 27/03/2018 16:24

It's a freebie, so if you mention it you should mention that you received it for free. Check the ASA guidelines.

Did MOD even actually read MP's post? Her comment is so ridiculous. Maybe she genuinely has no idea what's going on?

IsThisAWindUp · 27/03/2018 16:25

Hi @Anewhope, if you were sent Dorset cereals in the post and did a picture of it, then that's an #ad - you were sent it because they wanted you to show it to your followers so it's a business transaction. I'm curious what they said in the covering note though and what they said about disclosing it?

Honestly, ads don't piss me off if they are disclosed. I may roll my eyes a bit if they get too frequent but if they are disclosed, I am totally fine with it.

Fruitbowl2 · 27/03/2018 16:26

Maybe mother pukka could post the link for her instamum pals' information as she is the only one engaging. Her labelling is now 👌🏻

shesakeeper · 27/03/2018 16:27

MOD's hackles are RIGHT up. Unnecessarily so, I might add. All she needs to do is declare all her free stuff and maybe think a bit more carefully before taking on yet another free holiday. It's actually very simple. Nobody's accusing her of genocide here.

Chimchar · 27/03/2018 16:28

I think the idea of a business or personal account is a great idea, but I think that the 'instamums' wouldn't want to be a business user. They're trying to sell their lifestyle by being 'just an ordinary mum'.

I work with young adults. Comments or posts on social media causes carnage amongst them at times...I think that the fallout will come in a few years time when one of the cute small kids has grown up a bit, and gets the piss ripped out of them for something that they did when they were younger.

Worse that that, what if someone with some serious issues tries to stalk or track down one of the kids or mums for whatever reason.

I think someone further up the thread made a really valid point about people who look after kids who work in theatre or tv or whatever having to expand their cover to kid 'stars' of social media.

Stellastartsitall · 27/03/2018 16:30

I think these businesses need to be held to account for not making it clear that posters would need to tag it as a ad. This is very deceptive of them especially if Dorset cereals did not give the recipient any guidance. Its an ad full stop.

Anewhope · 27/03/2018 16:31

@isthisawindup I did state that it was sent free of charge, right at the top of my caption. So hopefully that complies with ASA. I was pretty upfront about it.

Dorset didn't specify wanting anything in return in their note to mevexcept if I did post about it, they asked me to use certain hashtags in line with their campaign. I posted as a thank you for the stuff they sent and because I do genuinely enjoy the cereal so I was pleased to receive it. Though I'm not naieve enough to think that they knew I would do as much.

Anewhope · 27/03/2018 16:32

Obviously their terms with other bloggers will have been very different I imagine. I'm very very small fry in comparison and so to be honest I do a little squeal if anyone wants to send me anything for free.

IsThisAWindUp · 27/03/2018 16:33

They are already set up as business accounts. You can switch your account over to a business one at any time. The only thing you cant do with a business account is turn your profile private. Once it is a business account you can track stats on posts etc, but for the user it is practically indistinguishable. The only way you can tell is that business accounts have grey writing under the name of the account holder which links to their Facebook account (I think) as to what kind of business it is. So DLAM's says "Media", Mrs Meldrum's says "Blogger" etc etc.

If Instagram wanted to make it clearer for users which ones are business (and likely to carry ads) and which ones are personal they would make this more obvious, but they don't give a toss about the user experience.

TheLadyhasarrived · 27/03/2018 16:37

I know Emma Hill is a fashion blogger not an instamum but her latest IG post is very interesting re the reality of their world. I’ve always been happy with her disclosure and I really enjoy her content anyway.

IsThisAWindUp · 27/03/2018 16:37

@Anewehope, well it must be pretty flattering to be sent stuff by brands. I do get that! The fact Dorset asked you to use certain hashtags is an indicator that they had some degree of control over the content so it falls under ASA guidance in that case and should have carried a #ad really. It's good that you said it was free and made that clear to your followers without trying to hide the fact.
