Pharmacies want to keep us sick 🙁 is there ANY truth to this?

There’s a lady I know who posts lots of pharmaceutical conspiracies on a regular basis. Things like, they have a vested interest in keeping us sick so as we continue to need their drugs.

The sane part of me says this is rubbish, can’t be allowed, no way.

But a little part of me wonders.🙁

I have a vested interest in this as I’ve an autoimmune disease and keep trying different types of strong medication that haven’t yet worked but Rheumatologist says it’s not cureable and drugs are necessary.

Met a man, just today, who said his wife has lupus but refuses meds and just manages with diet.

I’d be interested to hear what others think or know about this?

I’m not especially knowledgable about the specific details but I always remember a pharmacist giving a talk and saying he wished anyone who discovered the cure for HIV or cancer the best of luck finding a pharmaceutical company willing to manufactor it. I’m not convinced they keep us sick but I’m sure they enjoy the profits from it.

TovaGoldCoin · 26/03/2018 21:18

Pharmacies might want you to be sick, so they can keep selling you cough medicine and paracetamol, but as for Big Pharma...i doubt it.

Backscratchesforever · 26/03/2018 21:19

I definitely believe in this.

I have suffered with depression and anxiety for 16 years plus. I’ve tried at least 6 drugs and none have done anything but make me 100% worse. After trying 4 I was put on two and told this was the last combo I could try as I tried “most” (bullshit). I was on them 18 months and left the house under 10 times. I couldn’t function and literally doubled my fucking weight!

I came off them after Christmas and I have lost 1 1/2 stone without much effort. I’m so much healthier it is unreal.

I took tramadol for pain, that made my pain worse.

Pregabalin did nothing for my pain nor my depression.

Vitamin d3, codeine, melatonin and cbd oil have been much more effective than anything else.

I’m sure Doctors are getting paid commission.

Backscratchesforever · 26/03/2018 21:22

The evidence shown already that cannabis can cure and help cancer and epilepsy is outstanding.

Yet not one real study into using this to help tells me all I need to know.

Allthewaves · 26/03/2018 21:22

I think if you have any medical condition it would be in your interest to research effects of diet and lifestyle. Dr can only reccommend drugs.

My sons life has been transformed with his adhd meds

Whisky2014 · 26/03/2018 21:23

No

Whisky2014 · 26/03/2018 21:25

Oh Yeh and I work for "big pharma".

lubeybooby · 26/03/2018 21:25

not even remotely

ghostyslovesheets · 26/03/2018 21:27

YABU

brownelephant · 26/03/2018 21:29

Backscratchesforever I’m not sure how the fact that the meds didn’t work for you is proof of a conspiracy theory? Surely for big phama to profit you have to keep taking the meds?

TovaGoldCoin · 26/03/2018 21:30

Cannabis doesn't cure cancer.... Remember Bob Marley?

FancyNewBeesly · 26/03/2018 21:31

In some ways, yes. The pharmaceutical industry are often leading the way in developing new diagnoses (eg GAD) / stigmatising existing ones (eg herpes) to keep the money coming in.

However, people who use this are usually the biggest supporters of alternative medicine, which includes far more profiteering and charlatanism than the pharmaceutical industry. At least drugs have to be tested and proved to be effective.

ReginaldMolehusband · 26/03/2018 21:31

They (Pharma) don't need to keep us sick to make profits, they manage quite well with traditional methods of defrauding the public.
Just 6 years ago GSK were convicted of what was described as the biggest corporate fraud in US history and fined $3 billion www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-18673220

KatharinaRosalie · 26/03/2018 21:32

I bet the friend also posts lots of stuff about detox, natural remedies, homeopathy, food supplements and similar. Now that stuff is the money maker.

MadisonMontgomery · 26/03/2018 21:33

I work in a GP practice - I can tell you for a fact that GP’s and pharmacists aren’t paid commission. I do think however that due to 99% of patients wanting to be prescribed a pill for every single ailment, no matter how tiny, they get used to dishing out tablets. One GP said to me that most people would be better off if they cut meds down to what they absolutely couldn’t survive without - that often people take one thing, then get side effects so take a tablet for those, etc etc.

ButternutCrinkleFries · 26/03/2018 21:33

Of course they’re not. Do you mean Big Pharma or pharmacies?

I’m sorry you’ve got a long term condition backscratch but do you genuinely believe that? Tramadol may have not helped your pain but surely painkillers at least have to work to some degree or no one would use them Confused. I had tramadol after I had my appendix out and it was glorious.

CharlieWork · 26/03/2018 21:35

I'd be more inclined to read about people that believe in conspiracy theories, it's really sad reading actually. Anyway, no, they do not want to make you sick. Just think about it like this, for the millions of people that have worked for pharmaceutical companies over the many years all over the world, not one has ever said anything about it or whistleblowed. Not one. Most people are kind and want to help humanity. Noone goes into that line of work and thinks "I'll just make people sick today...awoop"

bananafish81 · 26/03/2018 21:35

CBD been named as an orphan drug in the US and there are RCT for Epidiolex (pharmaceutical cannabidiol), from the range drug company that manufacturers Sativex. They grow fields of marijuana in Sussex, or somewhere on the south coast, I can't remember exactly

JustPotteringAround · 26/03/2018 21:36

I don't think you mean pharmacies.

MabantoMoonface · 26/03/2018 21:36

I see the tin foil hat brigade are out in force

The evidence shown already that cannabis can cure and help cancer is of course complete and utter bullshit.

Coconutspongexo · 26/03/2018 21:37

A lot of these people who peddle this bullshit don’t understand the difference between cure, treat and alleviate

annandale · 26/03/2018 21:37

'The sane part of me says this is rubbish'

Yes.

There is a kernel of something like truth, in that the reason the companies exist is due to human disease. And I hope I'm not too naive - all humans, and certainly all human organisations, are fallible, venal at times and get stuff dramatically wrong that they shouldn't. Corruption and poor organisational cultures can develop very quickly, sometimes from a single individual's actions or lack of, causing ripples of deterioration in the environment. This is all true.

But when I think of the people I know who work for Big Pharma - God, they are some of the most moral people I know. Of course they want to keep their jobs, so I suppose they do have a vested interest in the company. But what your friend doesn't post is that they have the hugest bloody vested interest in curing stuff. If any company found a drug that actually fixed schizophrenia or major depression, they would be the richest company in the universe. These terrible curses, and all the other diseases of being human, will never go away, but the fact that a really rather breathtaking amount of effort goes into fighting them should be a source of comfort, not fear.

Coconutspongexo · 26/03/2018 21:39

Why do people also always seem to think cancer is one disease all with the same dysfunction of cell signalling? Fucking annoying
