To ask you - to which book or film do you really wish there had been a sequel?

Even though sequels are hardly ever as good and an unresolved ending can be the most powerful - if you could have the original author/scriptwriter/director/cast etc - for which story would you love to know what happened next??

I'd say:

  • gone with the wind
  • to kill a mockingbird
  • dirty dancing
  • pretty woman

I wish Studio Ghibli would do a second Borrowers film, I love Arrietty and would love to see where they end up. I have read the books but I liked the film too.

GingerKitCat · 23/03/2018 21:58

Me too Littlebelina Rooney Mara doesn't get the best reviews as an actress but I loved her in TGWTDT.

Undercoverbanana · 23/03/2018 22:04

Film - Good Will Hunting

Book - Grapes of Wrath

theredjellybean · 23/03/2018 22:05

A bit of track but I have just read 'lullaby'... That has the most infuriating ending... Ever.... Worse than handmaid's tale.

It's tripe.. The whole book... Do not waste money on it

Hippee · 23/03/2018 22:05

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore - Joan Aiken wrote a sequel called "Mansfield Revisited" which I really enjoyed (and I had hated every other JA sequel that I had read) - it follows Susan, when she comes to look after Lady Bertram (after Fanny's marriage).

There's quite a funny sequel to "Pride and Prejudice" called "The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet" by Colleen McCullough - but best read without trying to stay too attached to the main P&P characters.

mintbiscuit · 23/03/2018 22:06

The road (at least I don’t think there was a sequel). I need a happier ending!

BollySBK · 23/03/2018 22:07

Spy, the funniest film I've seen in years, with the gorgeous Jason Statham. Woof woof!!

Prestonsflowers · 23/03/2018 22:16

Thelma and Louise
In my head, somehow they would survive the leap into the Grand Canyon, land at the base, drive off.
Thelma would reunite with Brad Pitt (can’t remember his character name)
Louise would get together with Harvey Kietel character and forget about the Michael Mann character, I mean he called her Peaches! and the fact that she shot Harlan --and he really deserved it- -
Daryl’s head would be so up his arse he would asphyxiate himself

Graphista · 23/03/2018 22:20

Pretty woman - Shirley MacLaine would be perfect as vivienne's mother, would love to have seen Vivienne and Edward going to viviennes's home and Shirley sizing him up.

"The Truman Show" good call - how he learns about the real world.

The saddest for me is no "z" for Kinsey millhone

The devil's advocate - there was potential for 6 sequels there LOVE that film.

Ferris bueller's day off - does Cameron finally stand up to his toxic father or just get grounded for life?

ScreamingValenta · 23/03/2018 22:20

@Hippee I enjoyed Mansfield Revisited too - one of the few Austen sequels I found worth reading. The only aspect of it I didn't like was the treatment of Julia - Jane Austen seemed broadly sympathetic to her, so to turn her into another Mrs Norris didn't seem quite right.

SparkwoodAnd21 · 23/03/2018 22:42

@annandale there’s a sequel to Marianne Dreams?! I can’t find anything about it, what’s it called? I bloody loved that book.

PrincessLen · 23/03/2018 23:07

It's called "Marianne and Mark" - published 1960

To ask you - to which book or film do you really wish there had been a sequel?
PrincessLen · 23/03/2018 23:09

@ScreamingValenta - a fellow Girlsowner?

ScreamingValenta · 23/03/2018 23:15

@PrincessLen Very much so Grin

PrincessLen · 23/03/2018 23:19

@ScreamingValenta My mutual love for the incredible Antonia Forest made me think you must be! Grin

Lobsterface · 23/03/2018 23:26

Circle of friends - one of my favourite books and films. Saw the film first so the book was even better.
Rebecca - I never wanted that book to end
The Handmaid’s Tale - the tv series is one of the first screen versions of a book I’ve loved that I’ve really enjoyed. But I want to know what happened!

LadyAddle · 23/03/2018 23:47

@ScreamingValenta
But didn't you think Sally Hayward did a really good job with Spring Term? I thought it was really convincing, best one could hope for in absence of Antonia Forest herself! Wish she'd do one about Anne.

FloydOnThePull · 23/03/2018 23:55

There is already a Titanic 2, it gets a whole 1.6 out of 10 on imdb. It is directed and stars Shane Van Dyke who is Dick Van Dyke's grandson, we have a copy downloaded but haven't got round to watching it yet, it's one of those 'so bad, you'll love it' films apparently.

I'll try and watch it tomorrow and report back

TheDishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 23/03/2018 23:58

lemons i loved the living and the dead! I really wanted that second series.

I always hated the ending to I capture the castle, i know it was supposed to be lile that but as a child it was so unsatisfactory, I just needed something to show it all turned out alright in the end. And I would have loved a pride a prejudice sequel, although I'm not sure if it would have ruined it.

ScreamingValenta · 24/03/2018 00:00

@LadyAddle Yes, I thought Spring Term was very good. The style was as faithful as you could get in the absence of the original and I do hope Sally Hayward will write another (I have heard one is in progress but that might be wishful rumourmongering!).

The content was also good, although I didn't really agree with the direction Nicola's religious faith seemed to be taking and I'm not sure AF would have had Nicola and Patrick's relationship progress so neatly.

I don't think AF's plans for Ginty (the running away/stable girl plot) had become common knowledge at the time SH wrote her novel. I've read various fanfic attempts at following this up, but none of them seem to make anything convincing of it.

SH's resolution of Nicola/Esther was quite good, though I'd always theorised Nicola would get back to Kingscote and find Esther gone.

@PrincessLen I dream of that part-written draft turning up somewhere Grin.

feral · 24/03/2018 00:03

TV series- Firefly
And I want more Merlin where Arthur isn't dead cos they killed him too soon Envy

BollySBK · 24/03/2018 07:10

@feral - there was a film as well (firefly) called Serenity, really good, but I agree, why no further series, it was brilliant!

KingscoteStaff · 24/03/2018 07:34

Yes more Antonia Forest (not sure about Spring Term).

Please, Jasper Fforde, more Shades of Grey.

I didn’t like Death at Pemberley - should give it another try.

PasDevantLesElephants · 24/03/2018 07:38

@RumAppleGinger Totally with you on that one, although it was left well with most loose ends tied up and they were only going to be there for 2 years....

RumAppleGinger · 24/03/2018 07:49

Yeah @PasDevantLesElephants I just though it was ace. Much like the Newsroom, it tied up everything nicely but it was just so well written I didn't want it to end.
