I live in a gff neighbour has a 'device' outside their window (above my bedroom) which is basically like a clothes airer. Neighbour hangs washing out on this, and the washing hangs down into the view of my window! Currently neighbour has a bed sheet hanging down which is covering a large portion of my window. Aibu to not want to see neighbours washing hanging down into my window? I would take a picture but it would be identifying if they are on here. I've actually never seen one of these devices before and they are the only flat that has one. Anyway aibu to be annoyed and would this bother you. When it's windy like today it even bats against the window.

Tug it off. Bring it upstairs and let them know you they’re obstructing your window, which they’re not allowed to do according to the leases. There’s always a washing line clause in a lease (which everyone ignores)

BennyTheBall · 21/03/2018 12:02

That would drive me nuts and I would have to speak to them (although some of the other suggestions on here have made me laugh!).

Sparklesocks · 21/03/2018 12:53

I think you need to give them a knock and have a friendly chat face to face, just the best way to make it clear it blocks your window and you can choose the tone etc. Notes/asking landlord about lease rules might rub them up the wrong way and mean they're less likely to cooperate.

PrettyLittIeThing · 22/03/2018 11:59

Well decided to get a picture
Today. Don't care if they are on here anymore as this just takes the biscuit! It means I'm having to close my curtains during the day just to not see it but again it's batting into the window.

go up and show them the picture.
I agree that they should not have to be told as it seems so obvious that this is something they should not be doing but honestly?......you just cannot trust people to behave decently anymore

TomRavenscroft · 22/03/2018 12:04

Stop being angry on here and go and have a pleasant chat to them.

LagunaBubbles · 22/03/2018 12:05

You need to speak to them, thats not right.

FlouncyDoves · 22/03/2018 12:08

That’s hilarious!

Just go and talk to them about it. Take the picture with you and ask politely for them to stop. Or agree a day or two week when they can hang their laundry out.

No point being all shy about it or passive aggressive.

purplemunkey · 22/03/2018 12:12

Yes, please just go and talk to them. That would annoy me a lot. If you don't say anything now you will get annoyed every time and just blow up at one point.

I know you're worried about confrontation and having issues with your neighbours but its better to say something now calmly than to lose your rag after biting your tongue about it for so long. You can be nice, 'I'm not sure if you realise but...' rather than angry and see where it goes.

One of two things will happen - either they will say they didn't realise how much it hung in front of your window and stop, or they'll say they don't care and will keep doing it anyway. If it's the latter, they're just arseholes and whether you said something or didn't won't change that. I'd at least try.

ItWentInMyEye · 22/03/2018 12:14

Yeah that's not acceptable. I'd go and ask politely if they realise how low down their sheets hang, and show them the pic if they try and say it can't be true!

Bitchywaitress · 22/03/2018 12:14

OP. I smoke out my window as DH doesn't like it inside. When shall I come round?

Youshallnotpass · 22/03/2018 12:15

And if they go with option 2, just pull it off every single time it covers your window. shrug

ThatItIs · 22/03/2018 12:17

That photo is hilarious! You really weren’t exaggerating were you.

You need to go and see them and show them the photo.

Juells · 22/03/2018 12:17

It's unpleasant tackling neighbours about anything

I think I'd talk politely to them, ask if they'd move the contraption up over their own window. If they won't do that then the gloves'd be off. Cheap perfume sprayed on all clothes in front of my window, or air freshener, or Vicks Vapour Rub dabbed on lavishly.

GlitterBurps · 22/03/2018 12:17

Fuck that! Sorry don’t swear much but honestly what is wrong with these people?! Go up and speak to them now, be polite but firm but stop this. OP it’s only going to get worse when the weather improves.

Givemestrengthorgin · 22/03/2018 12:22

What they are doing is ridiculous! That would drive me batty. You definitely have to speak to them.

GlitterBurps · 22/03/2018 12:23

And to think I used to be irritated by a clothes airer outside my window Grin

BerkInBag · 22/03/2018 12:25

Oh no, that's ridiculous. It must be making your room dark and how miserable to have to look at that. Also, and this is not the point but, how are those sheets not going to get dirty blowing up against the outside of a building like that?

Biscusting · 22/03/2018 12:26

@bitchywaitress

OP. I smoke out my window as DH doesn't like it inside. When shall I come round?

I shit out of my window, shall we share a taxi to OPs house?

teaiseverything · 22/03/2018 12:46

Oh god they're having a giraffe. That's actually ridiculous Grin

AhhhhThatsBass · 22/03/2018 15:49

Have you spoken to them? They may have no idea. Go up, be polite, show them the photo, and ask them to refrain from hanging their washing over your window in future. If that gets you nowhere then perhaps call the council and see what they suggest. Irrespective of whether it's social housing or not, the council will know where you stand.
If they aren't helpful, time to buy the cheapest nastiest air spray and spray all their stuff!

Eliza9917 · 22/03/2018 15:53

Why is it such an issue? It's your bedroom window, not your living room or kitchen. In what way does it affect you?

Daifuku9 · 22/03/2018 15:54

Too bad it’s not above your kitchen window, then that would be a good time to cook curries and foods with lots of garlic and onions!

Maybe start opening the window and burning incense while you not so quietly meditate?

Daifuku9 · 22/03/2018 15:56

Or at least open your windows and accidentally close them on their laundry. Oops.
