To rant about dieting

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 09:20

I've just lost 3 stone over 4 months and I'm so so so so sick of dieting! It's one step forward 2 back, if I even eat one OTT (normal) meal I put on 2 lb and have to eat 800 cals a day for a week just to get rid. I have boobs and hips and I love food! I'm the person who turns up to a picnic with enough to feed an army, cheesecakes serve 4 not 8. I know how to diet, I'm just so tired of watching everything that goes in my mouth to both lose and maintain. I watch people thoughtlessly eating crisps and cakes with blind envy. I hate healthy food and just want to eat crap! Sorry for the rant, needed to get that off my chest.

As you were.

Have you thought about low carb op? I have friends who do this and after about a month of proper low carb high fat dieting, they introduced two cheat days, when they eat what they have been craving all week. They still manage to lose weight doing this! They lost loads actually and they were a decent weight to begin with - not overweight. They also run a bit, but not that much. They also drink spirits with carb free mixers in the week for a treat and still lose weight.

Though, I also think your “sacking off the last stone” plan is fine, if that’s what you want. Based on the fact that you already sound a nice size. If you were overweight, then I’d say differently, but I suspect you aren’t if you’re a 10/12 at 5’6/7?

CoffeeOrSleep · 20/03/2018 10:20

log your exercise too, it's interesting depressing - I did a popsugar work out on youtube that said it was a 500 calorie burning one. I really went for it. MFP said it burned 287 calories. Now, it might have been higher than MFP said, but it's unlikely as high as 500.

45 minutes high impact work out that left me crawling up the stairs and I hadn't even earned back enough to have 1 double chocolate muffin.

Then I realised i just couldn't be slim and have double chocolate muffins. Ever again.

Then I felt very sorry for myself. Sad

DarkRoomDarren · 20/03/2018 10:21

Ha! X post with @quim re low carb with cheat days.

CoffeeOrSleep · 20/03/2018 10:23

low carb does work - however for those of us who love carbs, it's so depressingly awful, it's hard to stick to. Diets have to be sort of ok, even if not lovely, or else it's impossible to do long term.

supersop60 · 20/03/2018 10:23

If you are 5'7" and size 10/12 - that sounds slim to me. Do you think of yourself as overweight still? Are you craving sugary foods because they're forbidden?
You have done so well this far! Flowers

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:25

coffeeorsleep it is that 'never again' realisation. I wish I could do low carb but I love carbs Sad. I have tried but it really really makes e miserable. Would probably be best at a no protein/all carb diet - could do that with ease!

is there any salad or fruit or veg you like.to graze on these shouldn't be a problem.i no it sounds so much easier said than done. but putting say a pot of salad or carrot slaw to hand can really work and u do slowly start to like the good stuff too.
insead of the guilt after a blow out.or a starve.try to incorporate better stuff into the next day, more veg.swap a cheese sauce for a stock on say.but don't let the guilt drag you into a vicious cycle.
your body shouldn't be punished or denied.
what are the things you like.to have it sometimes.little and often.like your cheesecake.could you look forward to that piece on Friday night.and really let yourself get set up.cup of tea.cushions and blanket.box set and that piece of cake.enjoy it.no guilt.youve worked hard for it.
is there any tast subs you might like.putting somecream cheese and yoghurt together over some granola or nut bar.some fruit swirled through.make little healthier cheesecakes of your own.
feel achievments for the little things.not just always guilt when you do wrong.

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:27

And thank you quimreaper your post made me blush. I may be a piggy but recognising I am makes me a better piggy! I'll take that! Grin

OP posts:
nottwins · 20/03/2018 10:30

I eat when I'm tired, hence exercise making me fatter. I should switch to coffee but cheesecake is nicer.

I currently have stomach ache because my work trousers are too tight (and I couldn't fit into my skirts this morning). Thankfully I'm working off site for the rest of the week so I can blob back into my jeans tomorrow!

This is life after ONE weekend of not thinking about food intake at all. Bastard cake and its tempting ways.

Sipperskipper · 20/03/2018 10:31

That is an awesome achievement, and I have exactly the same attitude to food!! Lost 3 stone in 2016 using MFP and some exercise. Got pregnant and had DD last May - put on 3 stone but lost it in 2 months breastfeeding! Stopped BF and it went back on and more in 3 months. I’m now heavier than the day I gave birth. I just love stodgy foods. Butter, toast, biscuits, cakes, jam, hot cross buns.

Trying to lose it again with MFP and exercise, but finding it hard on mat leave as we go out for lunch / coffee etc a lot!

I also have slim friends, and over the years have realised they just have a totally different attitude to food.

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:31

kateandme I've been doing this for YEARS and still hate 'the good stuff'. I just know this is me forever not being able to eat what I want to eat and it's a bit sad.

OP posts:
fattybombomtastic · 20/03/2018 10:32

Ah, my people!

Nothing to add OP, except you sound like me - well apart from I've got the 3 stone (minimum) to lose and am heavier than ever before. I'm at the beginning of the journey again no baby excuse either, youngest is 9 years old!!

Bah, bloody hate 'meals' - would happily eat Nutella out of the jar and endless coffees, graze all day on crap, crisps, cheese, biscuits..

However, I've just arrived back from the supermarket with bags full of kale and good intentions. Wish me luck!

clarabellski · 20/03/2018 10:33

Well done on your weight loss OP.

If you are at all interested in the psychology behind this (you mention your despair at having the food preferences of a toddler), you might find this book interesting: www.amazon.co.uk/End-Overeating-Control-Insatiable-Appetite/dp/014104781X?tag=mumsnetforum-21

It is not a diet aid book as such in that it doesn't particularly offer solutions but I found it useful to describe how I feel about food sometimes.

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:34

skipperskipper it's totally the attitude. I'm a firm believer in fake it till you make it but food is the one area that my cravings and thoughts never change. We should start a support group! Love your food list - top choices. Especially the seasonal addition of hot cross bun. So want one now!

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:36

Good luck with the kale fattybombomtastic you do know it will taste like shit though. Extra points if you can pretend to others you are enjoying it Grin.

Wow I have found my people!
I have lost a stone since october doing low carb, but just indulged slightly over the weekend and have put on 2.5 pounds! That took be 2 weeks to lose! And I wasn't even that naughty wails

fattybombomtastic · 20/03/2018 10:38

Totally with you on that OP - this state I'm in - being 4 stone overweight (just into the obese BMI category and a size 18 at 6' tall) is entirely down to 'eating what I want'/not dieting/not focusing on food. If I want to not be obese then I can't eat what I want - which is always the advice from slim people! ;)

That book looks interesting though clarabellski.

Cliveybaby · 20/03/2018 10:38

I have a lovely friend too who has to make an effort to eat lots or she loses weight :S

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:40

People say it is just water if you eat one bad meal but it can't be or it wouldn't take so bloody long to lose! I remember when a bad day kick started my metabolism - no longer Sad.

OP posts:
Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:41

Water weight even.

OP posts:
fattybombomtastic · 20/03/2018 10:41

Just bought the book - thanks for the recommendation!

tomatohead · 20/03/2018 10:41

Might be worth reading The Obesity Code, by Dr Jason Fung. In it the author explains how our bodies adjust our inner 'Thermostat' as we diet in an effort to keep our bodies in equilibrium... in other words at our heaver weight.
He ( a consultant who has worked with diabetes etc..) suggests some form of intermittent fasting is the answer. And not snacking on anything as this affects our insulin levels. Not sure about everything in this book but very interesting reading and he does explain why if you're overweight you are often much more likely to crave for sugary foods.

kateandme · 20/03/2018 10:43

I'm sorry champagne ok so if your saying this Is you.then how can we make you feel marvelous.
you've done amazing to lose.
but feeling glum over a way of living you say you cant change isn't helping now.if this is you leanr to love her.because I wreckon she could be pretty marvelous no?
what if this is how it is.embrace you.love you.
shit again having this meal.what about ok how to make this meal great.
what can you do to mke the diet plan tastier.mix it up.sticking herbs in salad citrus juices.the smallest supidist thing can make so much difference.and as silly as that sounds to give such tips thy can work
things that helped mum
stuffed pasta shells.
stck sauces with condesned soup instead of creamy cheese one
stirring herbs through pasta or rice.
stir frying rice
toasting baby gem lettuce till charred.
roasting veggies.
instead of pastry top cut out bits of it with cookie cutter.or do bread the same for pastry lids.
toast and crumble rye bread for a topping to veggie pies.
cornfkour mixin in king
Heinz tomato soup for pasta sauce.
poach chicken in stock and use liquid for a sauce
make chip and dip from oven cooked tortillas and salsa.mint cucumberer yoghurt dips.
I no these sound small and insignificant to what your going through.but try and find little globules of joy.
to enjoy how it might have to be.
enjoy who you are.all the hard work you have put into this.its brilliant
shows your tough and determined.
keep going.

AjasLipstick · 20/03/2018 10:47

I haven't read the thread but surely your issue is that you think eating normally is "dieting"

??

Serving a cheeescake meant for 8 to 4, isn't normal eating OP.

Could you reframe it in your mind? Think of it as adjusting your view of eating? Rather than dieting?

Champagneandthestars · 20/03/2018 10:48

You are very sweet kateandme I will take all your excellent advice. It's totally a fault with me - I literally want my cake and most definitely want to eat it too!
