Can I get dinner for 2 for £1.80?

Due to temporarily not having access to bank cards and not being able to go into a bank branch until tomorrow so withdraw some cash I have £1.80 in change and need to get dinner for myself and DH. We don't have much in the house but do have the usual cupboard staples of condiments but not ingredients as such- we have been away so no veg etc in.

What can I get from a supermarket to feed us both tonight? He has a big appetite. Our closest supermarkets are Sainsburys, waitrose and one of those little Tescos which is open later today.

Thank you!

OP is sorted now. This was last night Smile

I am sure OP can make a tasty meal with good advice she got. Always a good idea to keep a few quid in dashboard of car in case of emergencies or parking. I have a denim hat I wear on holiday and it has a little zip pocket. I fold up a fiver and 5 euros and keep it in my hat. I keep small bits of money in various handbags. I am always terrified of having no cash when i need it.

Glad you sorted out a dinner.

Perhaps look for a cookbook for students will help you build up you cookery skills, and kitchen ideas for the future.

It's useful to have a few store cupboard meals in. I don't have a very big freezer and tend to buy meat fresh, but we always have pasta, rice and cous cous and plenty of tins in.

I have not read all the posts but wanted to flag importance of having enough cupboard food in the house to get by for a few days. National electrical/power systems are looking increasingly dodgy and households need to be resilient in case of multiday power failure (leading to subsequent failures in transport, food and water systems). Be prepared :-)

  1. Mix a tin of chickpeas, or pulses of some kind, with a tin of tomato. If you have onions and garlic even better. Ideally add bay leaves even if you just pinch them off a neighbour's/restaurant's bay tree!
  2. While you cook them either microwave some pasta or potato.
  3. A dollop of yogurt on top.
  4. If you have flour, mix with pepper and salt, ideally chopped garlic, make into a dough with some water, roll out and heat on a griddle or frying pan - instant pitta bread.

Change out of £1.80 easilly.

Stay strong.

My go to cheapest meal is a jacket potato with a slice or two of corned beef from the deli counter.

Actually quite tasty. Couldn't eat it every day, but reckon it could be as little as 50p per portion. X
