Can I get dinner for 2 for £1.80?

Due to temporarily not having access to bank cards and not being able to go into a bank branch until tomorrow so withdraw some cash I have £1.80 in change and need to get dinner for myself and DH. We don't have much in the house but do have the usual cupboard staples of condiments but not ingredients as such- we have been away so no veg etc in.

What can I get from a supermarket to feed us both tonight? He has a big appetite. Our closest supermarkets are Sainsburys, waitrose and one of those little Tescos which is open later today.

Thank you!

Frozen pizza is actually a good one, you might be able to get some value garlic bread to go with it x

Mooey89 · 18/03/2018 15:53

I agree you've basically got ingredients for chilli already, or shepherds pie if you grab a couple of potatoes. Totally doable.

ParkayFloor · 18/03/2018 15:54

@WazzitCalled maybe I don't want to ask someone to lend me a fiver when instead I could ask some friendly MNers for advice instead?

@RLOU88 thank you, this thread has been helpful but I hate the way the odd few people always creep in and make the OP feel defensive over things.

I would have gone with a bag of spuds and bunch of scallions and made poundies (very Irish dinner right there but bloody lovely).

Spaghetti bolognese - all you need is pasta, Tin of tomatoes, fresh basil. As it's late in the day (for a Sunday) the reduced stuff is on the shelves so you might be lucky and get some cheese too
Chilli
Pasta and pesto
Egg on toast
Beans on toast with cheese on top
Frozen pizza

MrsJayy · 18/03/2018 16:03

Fwiw you can cook down frozen mince you don't need to defrost it just make a chilli buy passata for 15p in tesco and a tin of tomatoes

WazzitCalled · 18/03/2018 16:04

Why wouldn’t you want to ask a neighbour or friend or family member for a fiver though? It’s only a fiver and you can pay it back tomorrow. 🤷🏻‍♀️

darkriver198868 · 18/03/2018 16:06

From what you have posted looks like you just need a tin of tomatoes :).

NorksAreMessy · 18/03/2018 16:09

I would rather eat nothing than borrow a fiver. Truly.
Would be happy to lend anybody money, but would find it impossible to ask to borrow money.

elisenbrunnen · 18/03/2018 16:09

Why are people suggesting Potatoes or pasta when the OP has rice?

Tin of tomatoes, and you are done! Chilli con carne with the mince and beans (if they are baked beans I'd wash off the sugar sauce first. Chilis, garlic, herbs if you have them, tomato ketchup or puree.

Buy a loaf of bread, or some eggs for breakfast.

Done

ParkayFloor · 18/03/2018 16:11

@WazzitCalled because I don't need to borrow any money? I have enough to get by.

You already have the ingredients in for a chilli so why post?

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 18/03/2018 16:11

This really isn't an issue, it's one night just use common sense.

kubex · 18/03/2018 16:11

I popped into tesco on my way home and managed to get the stuff to make sausages, mashed potatoes, peas and onion gravy for 4 people for £1.94! Also got a Cheesecake for £1.27 to have for dessert. Bargain!

falsepriest · 18/03/2018 16:12

Just cook and eat what you have...

GreenVoyage · 18/03/2018 16:12

Some banks let you withdraw cash from a cash point if you use mobile banking. I've used it myself with Natwest.

yumyumpoppycat · 18/03/2018 16:13

I wouldn't ask someone to lend me a fiver if I could make do.

Treli · 18/03/2018 16:13

I’d go for rice and chilli, use the stock cube, chop chilli, beans and mince mix together, grab a can of tomatoes if you want to add and maybe some bread for tomorrow’s breakfast.

MrsMotherHen · 18/03/2018 16:14

i would make a chilli or if you cant cook get a value curry sauce make minced curry and rice. Grab a loaf and might get a cake cheap if you went at the right time.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 18/03/2018 16:18

CrochetBelle I think I may have missed the part where the OP begged for money. Hmm

KimchiLaLa · 18/03/2018 16:19

Cheap Instant noodles (think Tesco's are about 20p) mixed with veg from the reduced aisle for a stir fry?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 18/03/2018 16:20

I thought I only had £1.84, turned out my money had been paid in. 😆

londonrain1 · 18/03/2018 16:20

Why wouldn’t you want to ask a neighbour or friend or family member for a fiver though?

Who would ask to borrow money from a neighbour unless they were absolutely desperate? I would rather go hungry for the next 18 hours. But OP won't go hungry. She has enough food in her cupboard for this evening. She has money to buy extra food if she wants. She could presumably order a takeaway online. The bank opens in the morning. She's not going to starve!

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2018 16:21

I'd make chest rice with a load of ketchup, and but some milk for DH to have a cup of tea.

So I'd just be buying a pint of milk and a small bit of cheese. Because that's what I fancy.

But with a cheap tin of tomatoes you could bake a chilli.

But if you
