Can I get dinner for 2 for £1.80?

Due to temporarily not having access to bank cards and not being able to go into a bank branch until tomorrow so withdraw some cash I have £1.80 in change and need to get dinner for myself and DH. We don't have much in the house but do have the usual cupboard staples of condiments but not ingredients as such- we have been away so no veg etc in.

What can I get from a supermarket to feed us both tonight? He has a big appetite. Our closest supermarkets are Sainsburys, waitrose and one of those little Tescos which is open later today.

Thank you!

Really?

You don't know what to make with what you've listed you have?

ParkayFloor · 18/03/2018 15:27

OK so get a jar of tomato sauce and an onion and make a bolognaise with the mince and have it with rice and a loaf of bread and have toast for breakfast? We can get that for £1.80 I think - bread 65p, onion 30p leaves us 85p for a sauce.

Had cards stolen abroad and it's been a nightmare sorting it or so have literally rummaged for change. It is teaching us a lesson though to actually have some cash.

An onion never costs 30p!!

Onynx · 18/03/2018 15:30

Eggs- scrambled, boiled, fried....

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/03/2018 15:30

Put the mince in a sink full of water to defrost quickly.

Go to supermarket and either get pasta and a jar of sauce or tin of tomatoes to make spag bol, or more beans and a pepper and some chilli powder to make chilli to have with the rice.

Look if there is anything good in the reduced counter and save whatever you make with the mince until tomorrow. Or sometimes you can get things like garlic bread which would go with the pasta.

Jellycatspyjamas · 18/03/2018 15:30

Not the pint but would your bank do an emergency cash facility - mine will text me a code to take money out if I loose my card.

LEMtheoriginal · 18/03/2018 15:31

Potatoes are filling

MammaTJ · 18/03/2018 15:31

Chilli and rice? Glaringly obvious to me and you needn't even leave the house.

diddl · 18/03/2018 15:31

Has your husband contributed money/suggestions?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 18/03/2018 15:33

I love a cooking challenge and often make a random meal with the things in the store cupboard and the odd carrot left over in the bottom of the fridge. However, considering your reason for not being able to get cash out, have you asked your bank to help? In these circumstances my bank would issue a code to use at a cashpoint to get cash in lieu of new cards arriving. Not sure if all banks do it though.

londonrain1 · 18/03/2018 15:33

If you've got a Nectar card with at least £2.50 on it, you could use that towards your Sainsbury's shop.

RJnomore1 · 18/03/2018 15:37

Is it a pound of mince?

Asda smart price

Spaghetti 23p
Tin tomatoes 29p
Kidney beans 30p

A loaf 55p

Change left for an onion and you can make a slag Bol tonight, keep half the sauce and add the chilli and beans for a chilli tomorrow!

Tumblrpigeon · 18/03/2018 15:39

Is this thread real?
I regularly spend less than that on a meal for me and two big teenagers

extinctspecies · 18/03/2018 15:41

Don't buy ready made sauce.

A tin of tomatoes costs about 15p, an onion costs about 5p, very easy to make your own.

Littlelondoner · 18/03/2018 15:42

Do you have apple pay or simular on your phone set up? Saved me many a time in when not had bank card with me.

I think cheap pasta meal is way to go.

Or sausage and mash. Buy loose spuds and a value pack sausages.

CrochetBelle · 18/03/2018 15:43

Order a takeaway online?

Ask a friend to borrow money?

Use the ingredients you have to make the perfectly bloody obvious meal?

Soup and bread?

Frozen pizza?

@CrochetBelle

Are you OK? Confused

chocatoo · 18/03/2018 15:46

You have all you need. Use the baked beans which are already in tomato sauce to add to the mince and stock cubes. Chop up chilli and add. Add tomato ketchup if you have any. An onion might be nice but garlic would be better. Serve with the rice. It will be yummy. Spend the cash on a cheap bottle of cider...

BewareOfDragons · 18/03/2018 15:46

If you have a coop card, you might have some points (cash) on it... it does add up!

RLOU88 · 18/03/2018 15:47

CrochetBelle I might have read your post wrong, but are you suggesting the OP is begging for money?

ParkayFloor · 18/03/2018 15:47

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I'm not the best cook in the world hence what seems obvious to some might pass me by, but this has been helpful! Will get some pasta, a tin of tomatoes, an onion and a loaf of bread.

I'm certainly not begging for money when I've explained this is a very short term problem and will be rectified by 10am tomorrow, I just needed a bit of help which a lot of people have provided!

The 'A girl called Jack' cookbook is very good for times like these (she even does a banana bread that you can make really cheaply).

If you have chillies
this recipe is super cheap and fills everyone up.

*it's her first book, the red one that you want.

RLOU88 · 18/03/2018 15:50

I didn’t think you were begging for money, OP, and I’m sure most of us didn’t have that thought come to mind either! Be pretty hard to ask for money without the use of a cash card! Enjoy your meal

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 18/03/2018 15:51

A dozen eggs, the mixed size are cheapest. Omlettes x 2 and enough for breakfast

WazzitCalled · 18/03/2018 15:52

Surely you must know someone between you who could lend you a fiver. 🙄
