Can I get dinner for 2 for £1.80?

Due to temporarily not having access to bank cards and not being able to go into a bank branch until tomorrow so withdraw some cash I have £1.80 in change and need to get dinner for myself and DH. We don't have much in the house but do have the usual cupboard staples of condiments but not ingredients as such- we have been away so no veg etc in.

What can I get from a supermarket to feed us both tonight? He has a big appetite. Our closest supermarkets are Sainsburys, waitrose and one of those little Tescos which is open later today.

Thank you!

Good luck OP Love to know where you can get passata or tomatoes for 15p though?
Cheapest round here is asian grocery if you buy 4 for a pound. Otherwise the next cheapest is Aldi at 29p a can or 50p for passata

TheDevilMadeMeDoIt · 18/03/2018 16:23

You already have the ingredients in for a chilli so why post?

Because....

.....if you have little money it helps to know what you're going to buy before you get there.

.....if you've just got back from abroad and your cards have been stolen, you're probably not at your best for thinking straight

.....cooking and working out what to make from what you have doesn't come naturally to everyone.

.....would you like me to go on?

IncyWincyGrownUp · 18/03/2018 16:25

I want chilli after reading this.

Hope you managed to get what you needed OP, and that your bank are on the ball in morning.

FluffyWuffy100 · 18/03/2018 16:28

I’d buy an onion (15p) tin of tomatoes (35p), value garlic bread (35p) and use the mince, stock cube beans and rice. Yum.

Curlyshabtree · 18/03/2018 16:29

If you have a tin of chick peas and tomatoes plus some spices you can make a chana masala?

elisenbrunnen · 18/03/2018 16:30

What's chest rice, lynette

iklboo · 18/03/2018 16:31

OP and her bloke might not like chilli. Not everyone does.

EachandEveryone · 18/03/2018 16:31

We its Sunday shops will be shutting soon.

I have fruit and veg shops open all the time near me so its a no brainer.

I also wouldve been tempted to order a takeaway and pay through paypal.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/03/2018 16:39

How can she order a takeaway with no cards or cash?

Oldraver · 18/03/2018 16:42

I'm also wondering how she can order a takeaway.

Now I can remember my card details but surely if hers are stolen a stop would of been put on them ?

spicerack · 18/03/2018 16:48

tesco do spaghetti for 20p or tagliatelle for 50p, get some chopped toms for 30p and some onions and use the mince and and chilli and make a sauce!

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks

I’m confused by your post?

I’m suprised other posters wouldn’t ask a friend or neighbour to borrow a few quid. It wouldn’t have crossed my mind it wouldn’t be acceptable if it were a onceof and you knew you could pay it back the following day.

Treli · 18/03/2018 17:00

I don’t even know my neighbours names so wouldn’t be asked them and friends don’t live particularly close, would feel ridiculous to go out of way for a fiver when I could just use the 1 quid or whatever and food in the house. Not everyone has a support network that’s really close to them, but tbh even if I did I wouldn’t be calling on it for a situation like this, it’s not an emergency and plenty of food options available with the money and food.

lostinjapan · 18/03/2018 17:03

She could order a takeaway through Paypal, so long as it's linked to her bank account. I think.

Obviously she doesn't need to, as she has more than enough supplies and cash to feed herself tonight, but if you were desperate it could be an option.

Eggzandbacon · 18/03/2018 17:05

I'm just surprised people don't have more pennies around the house - my handbag is full of loose change!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/03/2018 17:16

Paypal shouldn't be authorised if the cards have been cancelled, surely?

Eliza9917 · 18/03/2018 17:18

With those ingredients in I'd have gone with spag bol and a value garlic bread or loaf of bread then you can have toast in the morning too.

Eliza9917 · 18/03/2018 17:19

BigSandyBalls, you can have your PayPal linked to your bank account rather than the individual cards.

EachandEveryone · 18/03/2018 17:23

My paypal doesnt go through straight away so its perfectly possible. Also, for all we know she could have credit on the account.

TheSnowFairy · 18/03/2018 17:38

@RJnomore a slag bol?! Confused

AdoraBell · 18/03/2018 17:38

Hope you’ve managed to get some food sorted OP

AdoraBell · 18/03/2018 17:39

My autocorrect also comes up with slag Bol. I have been to swear at the screen.

Icklepickle101 · 18/03/2018 17:43

I’d do either jacket potato with beans and cheese or chilli and rice or spaghetti bolagnese

iklboo · 18/03/2018 17:45

OP may not have paypal either, though.

pallisers · 18/03/2018 17:47

I am amazed at how cheap food is in the UK.
