Can I get dinner for 2 for £1.80?

ParkayFloor · 18/03/2018 15:07

Due to temporarily not having access to bank cards and not being able to go into a bank branch until tomorrow so withdraw some cash I have £1.80 in change and need to get dinner for myself and DH. We don't have much in the house but do have the usual cupboard staples of condiments but not ingredients as such- we have been away so no veg etc in.

What can I get from a supermarket to feed us both tonight? He has a big appetite. Our closest supermarkets are Sainsburys, waitrose and one of those little Tescos which is open later today.

Thank you!

But potatoes make a shepherds pie???

LynetteScavo · 18/03/2018 17:52

I meant cheesy rice. I still want cheesy rice, but am now cooking potatoes Confused

You boil rice, then stir in cheese and melt it. It's really nice with ketchup.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 18/03/2018 17:56

Do a coin flip. Whoever loses has to sacrifice a limb for a roast.

Serve with brown rice.

Makingworkwork · 18/03/2018 18:00

A tin of tomatoes is 15p - where are you shopping? It is more like 35p in my local shops for value tomatoes.

Yes to chilli. You will need an onion, tinned tomatoes and kidney beans.

Aragog · 18/03/2018 18:03

I’m suprised other posters wouldn’t ask a friend or neighbour to borrow a few quid.

I don't really now my neighbours well enough to ask them to borrow money is it would have to be an absolute emergency.

My friends all live further away than where the shops are, so I'd be better just buying what I could with what I had left.

I also don't have much cash in the house, and rarely have much money in my wallet either. DH normally has cash in his wallet but not always.

My PalPal is linked to my CC so I assume I couldn't use it if my CC had been reported stolen.

OlennasWimple · 18/03/2018 18:12

If you have a tesco club card or Nectar card you might have some points on there that you can use to pay for shopping too

Dipitydoda · 18/03/2018 18:25

Do a chilli or jacket and beans. Mix beans in with mince, add stock cube serve with rice - no need to even leave the house

Dipitydoda · 18/03/2018 18:26

I presume you’ve never been a student😂😂😂😂

MrsMotherHen · 18/03/2018 18:29

what did you make op

Elendon · 18/03/2018 18:34

A night of just cupboard staples (I can't believe you have nothing in the freezer), is bliss to me.

Anyway, a night without food but just staples will not kill you. I wouldn't recommend it long term and you obviously do not have children.

IlikemyTeahot · 18/03/2018 18:38

that's chilli for 2 days lol

PositivelyPERF · 18/03/2018 18:39

I’m just posting because I want to know what the OP had for dinner.

boxthefox · 18/03/2018 18:46

Plenty of grub in that house to make a nice chilli. Hope you got sorted OP.

Just shows (if you can) how important it is to keep a ten or twenty note somewhere safe in the house for emergencies like this. Same could happen if you have every card under the sun and there is a massive power outage and cards cannot be processed.

Emergency fund!

ParkayFloor · 18/03/2018 19:18

I ended up:

(This is where you see I'm not a natural cook)

Bought:
Tinned tomatoes 50p
Onion 15p
Garlic 30p
Loaf of bread 40p (reduced)
Reduced cake 35p

I fried the onion and garlic and browned the mince then cooked all that with the tinned tomatoes. Added one of the beef stock cubes. Cooked the rice and so had a ragu type sauce with rice.

Squashed a bit of chopped up garlic with butter and had some "homemade" garlic bread with that which was actually really nice!

Reduced lemon drizzle cake for dessert Smile

I usually spend far too much on shopping and actually that dinner was really nice it's really made me think about being more resourceful with food and shopping! I'm also going to keep £50 in the house after this! Thanks everyone.

I'm surprised people would borrow money when there's absolutely no need to. She has food and £1.80 in cash, thats enough to last until 10am tomorrow.

Butterymuffin · 18/03/2018 19:26

Sounds good! Just shows a humble dinner can be perfectly nice.

ParkayFloor · 18/03/2018 19:31

For all those suggesting I borrow money there is no way I'd be knocking on the neighbour's door asking for a fiver when I've got food on and just don't know how to turn it into a meal. We just don't have that kind of relationship and it wasn't needed!

Red lentils. Everyones kitchen staple.

Saz1995 · 18/03/2018 19:34

Well done! Even more of a bonus you got a cake for dessert xx

Gammeldragz · 18/03/2018 19:41

Excellent meal, plus bonus cake!

When I was a child we often ran out of food and money and ended up with some strange concoctions.
I keep a very well stocked pantry and freezer and could eat for weeks out of it if we had to, probably because I was brought up with such scarcity!

Etymology23 · 18/03/2018 19:51

I would definitely ask my neighbors if I could borrow a fiver... but I’m also the sort of person who regularly hobnobs over the fence for 15-20mins, and I’ve helped them with storing things in my garden and dog sitting and they’ll come and give me a hand if I need one etc so I don’t think borrowing a fiver would be an issue when I could pay it back tomorrow - I love having a good relationship with my neighbours, makes life much easier

MrsJayy · 18/03/2018 20:21

Least you got a nice dinner I hope you get your cards sorted soon

AdoraBell · 18/03/2018 21:02

Well done 😁 hope the cards get sorted PDQ. I’ve had cards cloned when on holiday, bloody nightmare.

Sorry but that sounds vile!

Loaf of value bread, 2 tins of value beans and two large potatoes to do jacket spuds
