AIBU to think some people should just grow up

Details changed and I’ve name changed to stop it being identifiable.

AIBU to think some people just need to grow up and get on with it at work?

I work in a busy fast paced environment. It’s a big office with two distinct areas. On one side are the sales people this is high stress and loud, on the other side is the support staff area which is much gentler. The support staff are mainly older women, the sales staff are a mixed bunch.

The sales side is very robust, lots of swearing and mickey taking. Some days people let off steam by shouting we all just laugh and get on with it, no one takes offence. When someone shouts we laugh at them then they laugh and the tension breaks. We need this release sometimes.

Anyway, one of the support ladies lady S was doing a job at the sales end of the office colleague A put the phone down and started to shout. Lady S asked a question of colleague A and colleague A shouted. She didn’t shout at lady S - she was just shouty iyswim.

Lady S has put in a formal complaint saying she has been bullied and colleague A was unprofessional. Colleague A often behaves like this it’s her passion that makes her good at her job.

If all the sales staff behaved in the quiet demure way the support staff do no sales would get made! But the whole support area is up in arms about poor lady S.

TBH I think lady S is a bit of a wuss but I am wondering if I am too harsh. Colleague A is really valuable to the business, lady S is easily replaceable.

It’s a bit like that in my office. I’m on a team that kind of sits in the middle of the support team and sales team (who can be quite loud but not usually in an offensive way)

We have an individual that is very shouty and sometimes rude to others in the office, I wonder how she gets away with it to be honest.....
Had I been on the receiving end of an outburst, I would have complained

kinorsam · 15/03/2018 21:53

Yeah, all those annoying admin staff who do nothing to bring in the money.

No, well, they are all too busy buying stock, sending out invoices, chasing customers who don't pay up on time, making sure the computer system doesn't crash and fixing it when it inevitably does, answering the phone, paying the bills, responding to queries, checking emails, reconciling expense accounts, banking the cheques, replacing broken equipment, sorting out business insurance, maintaining company car records and lease agreements, doing the payroll, dealing with complaints, reconciling the bank accounts, calculating the VAT, calling the plumber/electrician when needed, making sure that you don't all run out of coffee or toilet rolls, being the nominated first-aider, liaising with the accountants and other officials, arranging meetings, drawing up contracts, manning the reception desk and greeting visitors, complying with health and safety legislation and watering the sodding potted plants because nobody else remembers.

Oh yeah... and calculating the commission the company pays you.

@cucaracha
I have not called you anything! Stay classy, San Diego is about staying nice and from a film!

If you re read your prev posts you have described yourself in not a pleasant way - You, not anyone else.
And, I'm a council house kid who worked hard - being classy is not about being working class. But in your own words you said you're not interested in being nice... your words, not mine

GnotherGnu · 15/03/2018 21:55

I suspect this has become a bit of a self-perpetuating culture - popular person No.1 tends to shout, No. 2 copies them, no. 3 wants to join their gang, and so it spreads. Each individual member of your sales team will probably get quite a shock if or when they move to another job to find that people treat them as loons if they start shouting.

Justdontknow4321 · 15/03/2018 21:58

Op you and your team just sound like a bunch of twats to be honest.

cucaracha · 15/03/2018 21:58

kinorsam
You've described the work of at least 4 different departments in my office, so yes, if all of that was being done by 1 person, or even 1 team, I do agree they would deserve to be paid the same as the actual sales team Grin

londonista · 15/03/2018 21:59

Christ ... is your boss Jordan Belfort?

You all sound like you need to de stress with a harmless bit of dwarf tossing.

Ihatemyclients · 15/03/2018 22:00

Sounds like a horrible environment to be honest - sales team need to learn to behave in a professional way.

SharronNeedles · 15/03/2018 22:03

Currently working in high pressures sales and I don't shout at my colleagues. Funny that... No one in my office does! We manage to turn huge amounts of money between a very small team without resorting to shouting at each other

londonista · 15/03/2018 22:04

OP do you work in 1995? Because when I first started working in the City, Lady A would indeed have been told to "grow up". Or probably been sent packing back to Maidenhead.

Still work in the City and thank god it's not like that anymore, because guess what it's not acceptable behaviour.

gingergenius · 15/03/2018 22:07

Presumably this is some kind of trading floor culture?

AlexaAmbidextra · 15/03/2018 22:07

They sound like a load of infantile arseholes to me.

kinorsam · 15/03/2018 22:09

I do agree they would deserve to be paid the same as the actual sales team

Or at least to be able to concentrate their jobs in relative peace and quiet Grin

Tistheseason17 · 15/03/2018 22:12

@londonista
OP do you work in 1995?
🤣🤣🤣 best comment on this thread!

Mandeln · 15/03/2018 22:12

I've worked a lot in sales and one thing I've noticed is that the top performing sales person is usually a) a gobshite who thinks that they can treat others badly because they can 'sell' and b) gets allowed by management to do/behave as they want. Management are often terrified of losing said top performing employee and so gradually this employee will start to rule the roost.

I'm guessing A is probably like this?!

SmileyBird · 15/03/2018 22:12

Lady S takes the bonus we make for her

When you’re a grown up you’ll cringe that you ever said such a twattish thing Grin

Sounds like a shit working environment, ‘shouty’ ffs

BugsyMcGee · 15/03/2018 22:19

What is this shit about "demure" middle aged "ladies". Is maths not your fucking strong point? It's 2018, middle aged women of now didn't grow in the fifties.

I'm a middle aged "lady" and may even appear a bit "demure" but don't let that fool you pal. If you were to shout at me if I asked you a question while at work, you would be regretting it sooner rather than later and it wouldn't be through a complaint to HR.

Fucking demure....fuck off.

cucaracha · 15/03/2018 22:24

BugsyMcGee
Why are you taking it so personally? I am on my sales team, and I am a middle-age "lady" Grin
I am not offended because someone else is called "demure"!

Bingisatwat · 15/03/2018 22:28

God you all sound like a bunch of twats

DuchessofManchester · 15/03/2018 22:28

Do you not go home with a headache and a sore throat every night?

catography · 15/03/2018 22:29

I haven't RTFT (Halo) but can I just point out that as support staff, Lady S supports you in making her bonus for her

Daddystepdaddy · 15/03/2018 22:33

Typical sales people think they are God's gift and can act how they please.

Snowyhere2018 · 15/03/2018 22:38

I used to work in a place like this. It was full of sales pricks and their gigantic egos. You are all replaceable no matter how special you think you are. There is always another gobby big head ready to step into the hole you left so get over yourself.
