AIBU to think some people should just grow up

Details changed and I’ve name changed to stop it being identifiable.

AIBU to think some people just need to grow up and get on with it at work?

I work in a busy fast paced environment. It’s a big office with two distinct areas. On one side are the sales people this is high stress and loud, on the other side is the support staff area which is much gentler. The support staff are mainly older women, the sales staff are a mixed bunch.

The sales side is very robust, lots of swearing and mickey taking. Some days people let off steam by shouting we all just laugh and get on with it, no one takes offence. When someone shouts we laugh at them then they laugh and the tension breaks. We need this release sometimes.

Anyway, one of the support ladies lady S was doing a job at the sales end of the office colleague A put the phone down and started to shout. Lady S asked a question of colleague A and colleague A shouted. She didn’t shout at lady S - she was just shouty iyswim.

Lady S has put in a formal complaint saying she has been bullied and colleague A was unprofessional. Colleague A often behaves like this it’s her passion that makes her good at her job.

If all the sales staff behaved in the quiet demure way the support staff do no sales would get made! But the whole support area is up in arms about poor lady S.

TBH I think lady S is a bit of a wuss but I am wondering if I am too harsh. Colleague A is really valuable to the business, lady S is easily replaceable.

"Robust" environment? Frequently used an excuse for sorts of unacceptable work place behaviour.

beelzibub · 15/03/2018 19:48

Seriously I'm feeling so sorry for your colleagues who have to suffer because you and yours can't control yourselves. Arseholes.

Creambun2 · 15/03/2018 19:50

Let me guess your job is high pressure selling.

ithinksheisawuss · 15/03/2018 19:51

It is a bit laddish although colleague A is a woman. Colleague A is one of the most successful people on the sales team. We all shout - I was next to someone shouting today - I laughed and then they laughed.

We all know the rules and enjoy the game. It wouldn't be for everyone but we are actually a close team. Well as close as Sales gets.

I really think getting all sedate would impact on the bottom line.

Why does being shouty at colleagues be necessary in order to achieve more sales? You just sound like you're in the playground, I'd have complained too. Hmm

SmellyHead · 15/03/2018 19:51

Fair enough.

The company sounds poorly run and badly managed from what you've said Smile

OutyMcOutface · 15/03/2018 19:52

Yes. The sales staff really need to grow up. Why has no one ever explained the concept of an ‘inside vlice’ To them?

Louiselouie0890 · 15/03/2018 19:52

Can't work without shouting. They know the game. I know who I think needs to grow up

EduCated · 15/03/2018 19:52

Good grief, it sounds ridiculous. If people can’t do their job without shouting at someone then I wouldn’t consider them good at their job.

You sound pretty fucking smug about it all, and it’s clear you look down on the admin staff. Perhaps the shouting is the straw that broke the camel’s back?

YABU and ridiculous.

This wouldn’t be a reverse, would it? (Which would be U in itself)

ithinksheisawuss · 15/03/2018 19:53

Badly run?

Makes a tidy profit. Lady S takes the bonus we make for her.

All this shouting seems a bit... odd. And childish. What are they shouting about?
I’m just imagine a load of grown adults shouting and then laughing raucously. Seriously odd.

Babyplaymat · 15/03/2018 19:53

Sales team unprofessional and need to grow up. Seriously, where do they think they are? On a trading floor? Even then I'd think they were a little pathetic.

Sounds like A can't handle the stress if she can't get through a normal day without shouting at someone.

Gottokondo · 15/03/2018 19:53

The sales staff shouldn't shout at their colleagues, period! Stop making excuses. Sales staff can sell just as much on the phone while not shouting at their colleagues. You are being very unreasonable. A colleague feels bullied, you have to stop this. Every bully always says that they are just having a laugh. The receiving party decides if it is funny or not.

You sound like a horrible person.

Lizzie48 · 15/03/2018 19:54

You shouldn't look down on the admin staff. You wouldn't be able to do your high powered sales without them.

Chienrouge · 15/03/2018 19:54

It does sound like a bad parody of a trading floor environment.

notsohippychick · 15/03/2018 19:54

I don’t understand why shouting is a way to boost morale? Have a joke and a laugh but shouting is really strange.

Sounds like a bloody nightmare!

g1itterati · 15/03/2018 19:55

Your sales team sound like s bunch of arrogant, uncouth bores. Get out of your narrow mindset and grow up. This A is nothing special - sounds like a bloody fool.

Creambun2 · 15/03/2018 19:56

Most telesales staff are arrogant idiots constantly shitting on about their fabulous bonus which is probably lies anyway.

Babyplaymat · 15/03/2018 19:56

Unless she is sat there staring into space you are not making a bonus for her. She is doing her job and you yours. But I know who sounds more professional.

Seriously, I've worked in some very high profile and high stress environments and this behaviour wouldn't wash.

ithinksheisawuss · 15/03/2018 19:56

The shouting is at people. No shouts oh you cow. It's more they put the phone down and shout because the call went well.
Today the person next to me was frustrated because he nearly got the sale but has to wait and he shouted about it. He wasn't shouting at me just next to me.

OP posts:
EduCated · 15/03/2018 19:56

What do you even shout? Normal stuff at loud volumes? I’m imaging people just stood there bellowing ‘SHARON, DO YOU WANT A CUSTARD CREAM?’ Confused

notsohippychick · 15/03/2018 19:56

And btw why are you so hostile to this woman? Do you lot think you are above everyone else in the office?? Clearly.

You probably couldn’t do your precious sales without the rest of the staff so have a bit of respect. I deplore people like you who look down on colleagues and their position.

Ohyesiam · 15/03/2018 19:57

Can I just ask why you laugh when someone shouts? Is it to break the tension, or well, why?

gettingtherequickly · 15/03/2018 19:57

Yep, definitely sounds like the sales team need to grow up. What a horrible culture to work in.

Louiselouie0890 · 15/03/2018 19:58

Are you the wolf of wall street
