Thora maybe you missed my post earlier - I did say it might be dependent on area.

Certainly where I grew up if a girl over about age 11 went down the high street smiling at everyone, this would be taken as a green light / come and talk to me by men, some of whom would be creepy.

I learnt to keep my head down fairly young I'm glad that where you grew up this didn't happen.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:56

I am generally a smily person but I still don't direct it at men on teh street / train etc even though I'm in age of invisibiltiy due to past experiences.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:57

You think that girls who don't like being smilied at by random men on the street

Are harpies who are likely to accuse the men of sexual assault?

Wow - that escalated quickly Confused

Fuck knows where you live but I'm glad I don't live there!

I'm afraid others taking this literally have spectacularly missed the point.
But does this t shirt even exist? 🤔🤔

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:59

I live in North London, Thora.

Recent news articles indicate that creepy men are prevalent all over the place, sadly.

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 16:00

Crickey Snibble where did you grow up??

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 16:00

Sorry cross posts!

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 16:01

Not very compassionate is it?

Rather them than me.

That's part of what causes so many issues in the first place.

I wouldn't advise a girl to go around smiling at all and sundry, I am quite smiley though. There's a time and a place isn't there.

CadyHeron · 14/03/2018 16:01

But does this t shirt even exist?

I dunno, but I want one! Grin

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 16:02

Its a tshirt with a song lyric. We don't need to get all compassionate and state of the world about it, is the point. You're bringing in loads of unconnected issues.

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 16:02

Are people suggesting that little girls wearing a t shirt with Smile on it are at risk of encouraging random evil men to target them? But boys would be ok wearing it because then it's tongue in cheek? I'm really at a loss on this thread now! Confused

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 16:02

I smile at people working in shops or in bars or friends or children or people I know or people who move aside if I need to get by or people who chat to me in a queue etc

I don't smile at men I don't know with no reason though and I'd have thought this was fairly universal but apparently not.

Learn something every day!

MiaowMix · 14/03/2018 16:03

@Cady I think Next would sell out if (big IF) this T shirt existed. Because of Annie fans!

I’ve looked at Next online and I can’t find it! Maybe OP would prefer this one....

Stores have to stock items that appeal to all tastes. My dd would prefer the Annie slogan one tbh.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 16:05

Lucky - maybe. I found in the 80s (heyday of slogan tshirts!) that men in general and espeically creepy ones saw them as a good conversation opener. Similarly, smiling at random men seems like a terrible idea if you're a bit older (heading to teen and up).

Like I say, it seems to depend on where you live, not everyone has the same experiences.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 14/03/2018 16:06

It is universal, Snibble, of course it is. Personally I imagine people who walk along the street smiling away at nothing in particular to be a little bit simple...

Flame me if you like.

purpleme12 · 14/03/2018 16:08

We should suggest it to them!

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 16:08

Hey I was an 80's kid and wore my fair share of slogan t shirts (sorry not sorry) and can honestly say I was never approached in that way! But then I didn't take the slogans literally either. Examples - I did not think I was going to live forever like the kids in fame and I knew that Frankie was not the boss of me when he told me to relax

Eltonjohnssyrup · 14/03/2018 16:08

Shocked at people quoting from that Johnny Come Lately film with Cameron Diaz.

It’s not proper Annie without Carol Burnett staggering about.

I was Miss Hannigan in my school play. I was very good. Being a slutty lush has henceforth been a familiar place in my life.

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 16:09

If you think thats bad what about this one?

because of a SMILE? ahem yes, how would you call that!

MrEzraGoldberg · 14/03/2018 16:10

Bet they wouldn't put that on a boys t-shirt...

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 16:10

It is on a mans tshirt!

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 16:11

Ezra if you mean the Smile slogan - it is on a boys t shirt - i posted a pic above. Not sure about the Minnie and Mickey one though.......
