Housework - you wouldn't go out if you weren't "fully dressed" so the implication is that it's an essential part of your going out stuff.

I mean I'm not super fussed now I know it's from annie but to pretend that it means anything other than You're not ready to leave the house unless you have your smile on is a bit odd IMO. That's literally what it says.

ILoveAntButHateDec · 14/03/2018 15:12

I can’t see your problem? As others have stated it’s a play on words from the musical “Annie”. My dd would have loved that when she was young.

I can’t see anything offensive about a smile tbh??

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 15:27

Is OP to embarrassed to come back?

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:33

Maybe she's busy doing this!

(Old treatment for women with depression etc - SMILE!)

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:36

I'm kind of hoping that's not a real thing!

Willow2017 · 14/03/2018 15:43

It says 'you're never properly dressed without a smile' thats pretty obvious that unless you are permanently smiling you arent presentable.
Bull.

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 15:45

It's not pretty obvious because that isn't what it means! And its youre never FULLY dressed without a smile.

Are people seriously triggered by decades old song lyrics now?

Willow2017 · 14/03/2018 15:46

you are not properly dressed without a smile to quote op.
If you arent properly dressed what are you then?

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:47

No-one is triggered.

But the meaning of the song is clear. For people who have no issues with it, why pretend the words mean anything other than what they actually say?

I mean I'm not that fussed but if you say "you're never fully dressed without a smile" it's not exactly open to interpretation is it!

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 15:47

OP got it wrong. It's fully. You could listen to the song and maybe you'll get it?

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 15:48

But the meaning of the song is clear. For people who have no issues with it, why pretend the words mean anything other than what they actually say?

It's a song, they are always open to intepretation. They aren't meant to be taken as rules for living! No-one is judging you for not smiling!

For those saying its bad, can you tell us why?

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 15:50

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me if they've got the same problem with the men's version?

CadyHeron · 14/03/2018 15:51

Eh? That's a song lyric from my fave musical, Annie!
(Anybody else totally sing that instead of reading it? Just me? Oh Grin )

"Who cares what you're wearing.... it's what you wear from ear to ear (ear to ear) and not from head to toe, that matters....."

"You're never fully dressed without a smile!"

I now feel the need to watch Annie, not watched it for years!

SukiTheDog · 14/03/2018 15:51

I think the men’s version could be taken tongue in cheek. Just. Though I wouldn’t buy it. But there’s this thing about girls and women. It’s like when people say “oh, must be the time of the month” when a woman sticks up for herself or is seen to be “aggressively” taking a stand in something. “No, not at all. I just won’t be talked down to, by you. And I don’t need to sugarcoat my dealings “with a (girly) smile because I’m a qualified professional and I’ve the Norse and experience to go head to head with you”.

I could have had a bad day today and maybe coming on a bit hormonal (smiles sheepishly).

Pfftkids · 14/03/2018 15:51

When is this kids t-shirt faux insulted shite going to end. You're allowed to not be insulted by every little thing you know

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:52

lol

I'm still waiting for all the people heavily in favour to comfirm that they honestly think it's a good idea for girls over about 11 to go around smiling broadly at all and sundry!

I don't really care about the t-shirt.

It seems odd to pretend that it isn't saying that you're not fully dressed if you aren't smiling though given that's literally what it says.

SukiTheDog · 14/03/2018 15:52

Bugger....nowse, nowse, nowse (not smiling now)

Sirzy · 14/03/2018 15:53

I really can’t see a problem with people of any age smiling at people. Quite a sad world if people think smiling is such an issue

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 15:53

Nobody said it was. You haven't understood the point of the song, have you? And the fact that its directed at men rather than women?

CadyHeron · 14/03/2018 15:53

Oh yay, just catching up on the thread.
Waves at all the Annie lovers.
Going to have Annie songs going round my head all day now!

ThoraCentisis · 14/03/2018 15:54

btw, I'm a woman over the age of 11 and I smile at people. So does my daughter. Wht do you think happens to people when they smile? [confued]

purpleme12 · 14/03/2018 15:54

Where is this tshirt? Cos I'm just disappointed this isn't true!

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:54

I wouldn't but it for my girls TBH but I hate slogan tshirts generally.

My experience of them in the 80s is that they give creepy men a conversation opener.

In fact if you walked down the street wearing this and you were I don't know 14, and you didn't have a perma-smile on your face, it would invite even more "smile love" than you'd get on a normal day!

So actually I'm going with Nope.

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 15:54

So a boy can wear it but a girl can't? Because it's humorous on a boy but sexist on a girl? Really?

cucaracha · 14/03/2018 15:56

How much do I love this forum. Only on MN can you go from a "(...)smile tshirt to Girl’s are still being taught to be compliant, to be pleasant, accommodating, ‘happy’ or the appearance of it and it STARTS with these gendered slogans. And the girls who stand up for themselves are shrill, fishwifes, bitches, bossy, bags and on it goes UNLESS don’t buy this crappy slogans tshirts.

Some posters REALLY have issues in their lives Grin I am glad I live in the RL, not in their head.

Funnily enough, I noticed that more men smile at my DH than they smile at me. They are probably too scared of being accused of sexual assault by one of the MN harpy.
