I'm sure I've seen this t-shirt (online, a couple of months ago maybe) because I remember rolling my eyes at it. I think it wasn't exactly as OP stated because I know the Annie song well and I'm pretty certain it wasn't in reference to that.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 14:16

I hate to pick on a random comment but anyway

"smiling actually makes you feel better and also others who are smiled at."

I strongly recommend girls over age about 11 NOT to go around smiling at everyone as it's highly likely to result in a bad scene for them, and an inability to go about their business without interruption.

I suppose if you don't smile you get shit for that as well

But for sure going down the high street smiling at all and sundry is going to result in some pretty tricky attention

I learned to keep my head down fairly young - this may be area specific.

DalekDalekDalek · 14/03/2018 14:18

Oh the outrage! Will no one think of the children! Now they are being told to smile! Disgusting!
Wink

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 14:21

Just realised I never tell my girls to smile!

Checked with DH and he said no you don't... I wonder why that is. Maybe some kind of displaced trauma from having to wear a tshirt like this as a girl Grin

We are quite a smiley family though...

Buglife · 14/03/2018 14:22

Having shopped for two boys in baby and toddler sections I can tell you there are plenty of things for boys that say “smile” and “happy” etc.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 14:22

The other problem with slogan t-shirts is that they act as an opener for random or dodgy men to strike up conversation with you.

Which can be not welcome when you're young.

MedicinalGin · 14/03/2018 14:23

Ach, it’s not so bad. At least it’s not some nonsense about princesses or being pretty!

Andthatsthat · 14/03/2018 14:24

Bloody love Annie! I’d buy it. Hell, I’d wear it GrinGrin

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 14:33

There's a men's version on Amazon. Happy now OK?

SukiTheDog · 14/03/2018 14:37

I get it. It’s like when people pass you in the street (men usually - of the cheeky chappie sort) saying “cheeer up ‘love’”. Why? For you? Fuck right off.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 14/03/2018 14:40

It's not though. It's a line from a song Confused

SukiTheDog · 14/03/2018 14:44

Fair enough housework but for me, it’s similar. But then when I was little, I wanted to be made of “snips and snails and puppy dogs tails”. Sadly, there was an expectation that I’d play with dolls, smile and be compliant.

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 14:46

But there's a boy version! So how is it the same as men shouting cheer up love?!

Coconutspongexo · 14/03/2018 14:47

It’s nothing like that though

HouseworkIsASin10 · 14/03/2018 14:48

Don't get me wrong SukiTheDog anybody that says to me 'Smile it may never happen' will be told to GTF grrrr!! .

But I am just not getting that from this kids t shirt.

JosephWearsNoPants · 14/03/2018 14:48

as if no song, game or art was ever found offensive. because its from a musical it must be lovely wonderful and great.

JosephWearsNoPants · 14/03/2018 14:49

suki i agree entirely

Luckyme2 · 14/03/2018 14:51

Suki where do you stand with the men's version then?

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:00

I wouldn't have known it's from a musical,I'd just see a little girl with a tshirt on saying she shouldn't go out unless she's smiling.

If someone explained it then I'd say, oh ok then.

I still think it is a bad idea for girls to smile at all and sundry over the age of about 11.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 14/03/2018 15:02

shouldn't go out unless she's smiling

Didn't say that did it?

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:04

Just remembered! Anyone seen that cooking prog pioneer woman or frontier woman, and then I caught another one yesterday

The women who present - especially whatever the second one was - have a sort of permanent smile which is big and fake and they even manage to keep it in place while they talk which must take a LOT of practice.

To my eye it looks really peculiar.

I think that smiling genuienly and as much as you want is fine, isn't it? having to paint a smile on your face all the time is weird TBH.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:05

Lots of men hardly ever smile.

I was watching at work the other day.

The women are far more smiley - I think this is upbringing isn't it / socialisation.

Men who smile a lot tend to get labelled as extremely friendly / flirty as it's quite unusual.

SnibbleAgain · 14/03/2018 15:05

Oh just remembered there's a man at work whose nickname is literally to do with him smiling a lot!

happytobemrsg · 14/03/2018 15:07

I really don't see what the problem is
