To not be ‘Mum’?

I am primarily called by my first name by my kids.

I quite like it but others seem to find it shocking and as if I’m trying to be ‘cool’. (I’m not!)

Is anyone else not ‘Mum’?

She wasn’t at all arsey in fact she’s lovely. I was in conversation and said how well behaved the little boy was being and she said thanks he’s actually my son. I said oops sorry she said oh no worries we choose not to have labels so it confuses people sometimes.

Sorry unicorn, I was refering to general arseyness. Not your friend :)

I'm still 'Mummy' though DD1 calls me 'Mum' sometimes. It's lovely, I waited a long time to be called that, DD1 came to live with us aged 1 when I was 40, so when she first called me 'Mama' it was very precious. Smile

I don’t mind my ds calling me Mum, mummy or my name. Some people do think it’s cheeky for children to call their parents by their given names though, and a friend of mine told my ds off, which was unnecessary.

Limonviola They're in their teens & more than happy to keep calling me Auntie. Theyve never been told they have to. My best friends children are in their 20s & still call me Aunt Glitter. Having said that I'm in my 40s & still have an Aunt X and Uncle Y 😊

My cousin calls her mum by her name and her brother calls their mum mother. I think I'm gonna call my mum by her name and see what kind of reaction I get. I don't fancy my chances....

I was brought up calling my mother by her first name. I really don't like the word 'mum' now. Honestly I know a few families like this and not because they're 'trying to be cool'. Obviously its no one's business really.

My dds do half and half "mam" or my first name. It's fine by me. I call my mum by her first name so it's normal in my family.

I have no memory of ever calling my parents 'mum' and 'dad' - they say it just happened - because my older sister copied what they called each other and I followed suit. I remember people did find it odd when I was a child and I remember feeling a bit awkward having to refer to them as 'my mum' and 'my dad' when talking about them to others.

My kids however, call me 'mum' or 'mummy' and I'm happy with that. Wouldn't mind if they chose to call me by my name either though.
