To be annoyed at the exclusion of single parents

There was a bit up roar about the brewers fayre not including single mums in their Sunday mother's day deal.

Just seen a local place of ours saying mums go free with another full paying person. My parents are away and obviously friends are with their families. So just me and DS this mothering Sunday. So I have to pay full price as I normally would. Just feel sad that us single mums are made to feel excluded! It would be nice to have a treat! AIBU?

Weird that this thread is so anti that concept

It's not. It's just not the point at all.

Agustarella · 09/03/2018 17:51

YANBU, it's insensitive of them. I guess you could go with a mate and split the discount, but you probably wouldn't want to if they are putting out a vibe of 'only couple families welcome'. I wouldn't like to go anywhere where it's just 'Smug Marrieds', even though I'll be in that club soon enough myself!

Gwenhwyfar · 09/03/2018 17:51

"It is a statistical fact that single parents are more likely to be in poverty than other families. Weird that this thread is so anti that concept. "

Nobody has denied that, but it's hardly Brewers Fayre's fault is it!

mustnotlooktohave · 09/03/2018 17:53

It isn’t just about BF. It’s about as OP says in her thread title feeling excluded.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 09/03/2018 17:54

I feel your pain OP. For Mothering Sunday places could easily promote offers that benefit one parent - mothers - it doesn't need to be a two adult offer for that day. Even if was just a Mothers Day menu like pizza express have, that includes a treat for mothers and doesn't assume an accompanying partner. People are being very silly on this thread.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/03/2018 17:54

"It’s about as OP says in her thread title feeling excluded."

But her thread is about BF or other companies. It's not "I feel excluded when I see family deals. What can I do to get over this?" She's not asking for help with her feelings, she's blaming the companies! It's like she thinks commercial discounts are some kind of public service.

As with most things it is one thing that is like a door briefly opening and showing you what you’re missing.

TheFifthKey · 09/03/2018 17:56

You know what, Mother’s Day as a single mum is shit, honestly, it’s really fucking shit, and yeah, stuff like that when you just picture all the nuclear families trotting out together while you pay the same amount to sit there on your own willing your kids to behave and not have anyone to talk to is pretty shit too, so I sympathise. And “why not go with someone else?” is petty daft, because if people had anyone else to go with, they’d go with them, and not having anyone else is far more likely for single parents (because friends will be doing stuff with their own families).

TheFifthKey · 09/03/2018 17:58

Mustnot, exactly that. Stuff other people take for granted that’s not available to you, and it’s all the time.

Barbie222 · 09/03/2018 17:58

I've been to many adventure parks and I can honestly say I have never noticed a smug married air anywhere. Hmm

Maybe a stressed out family air, from time to time.

Sometimes you see what you want to see!

Witchend · 09/03/2018 17:59

Arrive early, go and sit outside and when you see someone with an odd number of adults ask if you can join up and go in together and both pay half.
No problem. All sorted.

We hardly ‘want’ to see things that could potentially be upsetting.

I do of course know what you mean - like when you buy a new car and start seeing it everywhere - but it doesn’t deflect from the fact that when you deviate from an established norm, that can be uncomfortable.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 09/03/2018 17:59

They’re not going to give you a free adults meal and lose money. But they should at least give you a kids meal free.

TheFifthKey · 09/03/2018 18:00

I guess you’ve never been as a single parent. You feel very isolated at those places at a weekend when everyone’s in little groups and you’re juggling a tray and food for three people and a pushchair and everyone just sort of stares at you being very frazzled with kids escaping everywhere. It really sucks.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/03/2018 18:00

I think it’s a 2 for 1 offer no more no less

Sorry it upset you though Flowers

mustnotlooktohave · 09/03/2018 18:00

No Golden, she doesn’t.

But does it really need explaining again that Mother’s Day can open up some sensitive wounds for some people?

Barbie222 · 09/03/2018 18:01

As with most things it is one thing that is like a door briefly opening and showing you what you’re missing.

Or you could be glad to be able to have a nice day out with your child now that you have made a better life for the both of you? OP had budgeted for the day anyway and would presumably have gone and had a great time.

stopbeingabloodyvictim · 09/03/2018 18:01

OMG....I'm being excluded too, as I don't have children, I'm being unfairly treated for my inability to reproduce.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 09/03/2018 18:02

I think single parents have so much to handle logistics and emotions wise anyway x so try to not let a marketing over for a frankly not great restaurant bother you

mustnotlooktohave · 09/03/2018 18:02

I agree mother’s day must be very painful for those struggling with their fertility, but do you really have to be so unpleasant?

CavoliRiscaldati · 09/03/2018 18:04

I've been to many adventure parks and I can honestly say I have never noticed a smug married air anywhere.

that did make me laugh Grin

AllisLost · 09/03/2018 18:05

Take your mother.
And YABU
And I am single

Eltonjohnssyrup · 09/03/2018 18:05

stopbeing, that’s not strictly true. Because it’s really just a 2 for 1deal with a silly name. They couldn’t actually turn non Mum’s down.

mustnotlooktohave · 09/03/2018 18:06

OP says her parents are away.

My own mother has been dead for twenty years.
