IWD today, obvs, so one guy on our team work messaging chat (about 20 people on there) shared this pic. What banter eh.

I replied saying ‘sorry I don’t get it Confused - can you explain the joke’, and he’s said that he will explain to me tomorrow at work, the delight that he is.

Cue others on the chat offering to book a meeting room, film it, send a company wide invite etc so we can all witness his explanation.

I feel like just watching him squirm in front of the whole team won’t be enough, so I wanted to plan a line of questioning or whatnot that would maximise the enjoyment for all involved, except for him, and not make me look like a humourless fun sponge in the process.

Ideas?

It’s a clever joke. Or it would have been if the grammar were better.

My mum taught me if there's a plug on it it's electric, if it's electric it's men's work! Works for me!

RadioGaGoo I don’t need to know you. I just know the reason feminists aren’t taken seriously is because they overreact to things like this and end up looking crazy, thus pushing both men and women away.

Cheripie64 · 08/03/2018 21:17

Made me lol Grin
Flowers for the mortally offended- joke!!

LeighaJ · 08/03/2018 21:17

Cuz on International Women's Day we womenz should still know "our place" and remember to iron. 😒

upsideup · 08/03/2018 21:18

Iron the correct wording, into his face.

RadioGaGoo · 08/03/2018 21:20

WhatToDoAboutThis2017. Well you see, that's such a good response and managed without making assumptions or belittling the OP.

AssassinatedBeauty · 08/03/2018 21:22

It's a moronic thing to post on IWD and is the sort of thing that if you object causes all the anti-feminists to howl at you that you're a spoilsport and ruining feminism for everyone, even though they hate feminism.

If only you laughed along with the amazingly clever humour then men would be falling over themselves to stop being sexist! Duh!

Can the people who find it funny please explain it to me? I don't get it, why is it funny?

Rose International Men's Day is 19th November. Google is free. You're welcome.

MyLearnedFriend nope, no slug. I just have a sense of humour. I find it a better tool in life than droning on at people & insulting them.

I’m not apologising for retaining my sense of humour. I found it funny.

Find out his hometown/ favourite sport/hobby.
Let him explain his joke.
Then say say oh I see, it’s like the one about ... insert demeaning joke hometown/sport/ hobby.
But I expect I’m a mean humourless fun sponge.

CarefullyDrawnMap · 08/03/2018 21:41

Oh, I'd have read it as being ironic - more taking the piss out of someone who'd say that to a woman, than actually meaning it literally.

Longdistance · 08/03/2018 21:41

Could of used more lower case than the twat needed.

notsohippychick · 08/03/2018 21:43

I thought it was funny!! Lighten up!!!

grasspigeons · 08/03/2018 21:44

have you never heard the 'if you don't laugh, you'll cry' phrase. offensive humour plays on that. Its offensive and belittling, but I still laughed momentarily.

ShamelesslyPlacemarking · 08/03/2018 21:44

I didn't even realise it was IWD till my male colleague came in and said 'as it's IWD and I'm feeling generous, let me know if there's anything you need explaining today'.

Now, this is a funny joke because the man is directing it AT HIMSELF. He is pretending to be the kind of douchebag who doesn't understand what 'mansplaining' is. It's an example of 'punching up', or making a joke at the expense of people who have more power.

On the other hand, the joke that the guy in the OP sent is an example of 'punching down', or getting a laugh at the expense of a less powerful group. International Women's Day is about raising up women, but haha, let's remind them that some people still think they should be doing the ironing.

The joke could easily be made to "punch up" by revising it to "Could have told your husband to iron it", which I actually think would be funnier.

Nope, that’s not even funny in the slightest.
