Maternal GF worked on the railways during WW2 because he was medically excused (deaf) then he worked in lots of out door jobs like delivering coal or rubbish collector till he retired.

Maternal GM worked in retail.

Paternal GF was in the TA during WW2 acting as "batman" to various COs from Africa all through Europe. He never used his rifle once. (He joined the TA with a mate as a "wheeze" a few days before war was declared). After the war he was a hospital cook.

Paternal GM worked on a potato farm, well into her 70s!

GF also worked in Sainsburys, but was a butcher when I was born.

GM worked in a tannery (not sure what she did) and as a hairdresser, then probably a SAHM (2 DC).

Mum's parents were a farmer and wife who then took over the running of the farm when her husband died when my mum was 12.

Dad's father was a customs and excise officer in the Chinese maritime customs and his mum had gone out to China as a nanny before marrying.

brieandcrackers · 05/03/2018 00:26

GF 1: soldier, postman and painter/decorator
GM1: wartime factory worker, dinner lady and carer
GF2: soldier (RAF I think) and travelling salesman
GM2: secretary and retail worker

Their fathers/grandfathers were soldiers, postmen, farmers, clergymen etc. Not sure about the women - GF1's mum was in a workhouse as a child but think was later a SAHM.

Have loved this thread - interesting to see jobs that have disappeared with time
