GM 1 deputy head of my old high school
GF 1 civil servant (fairly high up)
GM 2 bar maid
GF 2 chauffeur

Maternal GF ~ Army (WWI and II), then Corps of Commissionaires

Paternal GM ~ housewife
Paternal GF ~ Navy then Army (WWII)

Mothers side
Grandad-- Uboat captain during ww2 then went on to be a lawyer, then a professor(his brother was killed in starlingrad)
Grandmother-- never worked, stayed at home!

Dads side
Grandad-- merchant navy
Grandmother-- nurse

Paternal GF: bank manager
Paternal GM: SAHM (but worked as a telephonist until marriage, when she had to resign. Late 1920s

Maternal GF: policeman
Maternal GM: housewife (not really SAHM as children evacuated and then went away to boarding school). In later life, she got a job with an insurance company.

Paternal grandfather was a naval officer
Paternal grandmother was a seamstress and worked in the theaters

Maternal grandmother volunteered in the church and was very respected
Maternal grandfather was a coach driver

Maternal GF/M owned a corner shop and post office

GF 1: started as a mechanic and then a supervisor of the service area of a large haulage firm.
GM 1: carpet fitter and then what is now called a health care assistant on the maternity ward.

GF 2: Worked for ICI
GM 2: personal secretary for a company MD. In fact it was the same haulage firm as GF1, but they didn't really meet until my parents met and married.

GF2= Sales for large chemical company
GM2= Housewife.

Maternal GF owned his own business for which two of his sons also worked.
Paternal GF worked for British Rail or whatever they were called in the early 1900s - no idea in what capacity.
Neither GM worked.

Paternal grandfather hotel manager/barman, grandmother was at home with the children but as a farmers daughter helped on the farm until marriage.

Maternal grandfather was a tree surgeon and then groundsperson on a big estate in Surrey whilst my grandmother was a cleaner (now retired).

I meant neither GM worked outside the house, I'm pretty sure they worked damn hard in the house and raising children (before you come on and crucify me for suggesting SAHMs don't work) Grin

GM1 housewife but died in childbirth with last child
GF2 worked in a quarry

PGF - army in ww2 then shipyard worker
PGM - wren then housewife

MGF - miner then engineer in a power station
MGM - worked "in service" in an elite boys school then housewife then a cleaner in the local police station

Maternal GF - council 'highwayman' (that was on his marriage certificate!) and later worked in an engineering factory
Maternal GM - housewife (had been in service)
Paternal GF - smallholder in Ireland
Paternal GM - housewife (previously a geriatric nurse, as was described then)

No idea about my dads side

Mums side
Both were in the army when they met, GF was a paratrooper, not sure about GM, I think she was a nurse, but then she was never in nursing since being in the army so not sure that’s right.
Anyway, when I was around, and just before they retired, GM worked in the tea factory packing tea bags, and GF worked for a wholesalers in the packing department.

Not very glam but there you go.

GF1 some sort of engineering
GM1 I don’t actually know

GM2 did domestic jobs when she was young and never went back to work after having 4 daughters

GF2 is a bit of a running funny story on our family. He had a lot of different jobs and so my Mum and her sisters say

DM My Dad was a cook in the army
DS1 My Dad was a butcher
DS2 My Dad was a greengrocer
DS3 My Dad was the Milkman!!! Those were the jobs he was doing when each of them were born.

Ah, now I miss them all Sad
