To think that doing yoga in a public place is just attention seeking?

Several times this year I've seen people crack out a mat in the middle of a public place and start doing yoga.
When I say public place, I'm not talking about a park or a beach, but an airport, bus station and a waiting room.
It seems to be a trend on Instagram too, the culprit usually kitted it in something very reveaking.
I love yoga and it's great for being a "portable" exercise but AIBU in thinking that doing it in a place where you stand out is just showing off, and is a little bit wanky?

Its super wanky, but something that I would love to do. I wish I were flexible enough to do yoga publically without feeling embarrassed.

FrancinePefko · 03/03/2018 16:19

People do it everywhere in India

ScreamingLevitation · 03/03/2018 16:20

I saw someone doing it in an airport recently. I was slightly jealous, because long cramped flights really made me want a good stretch, but my gosh it looked wanky.

With the exception of countries where it is the cultural norm.

The word is ‘attention whore’.

Look at me, look at me! I’ll do anything for attention!

QueenOfGaviscon · 03/03/2018 16:25

I bet they live for avocados too 🥑

heateallthebuns · 03/03/2018 16:25

I don't know, if it's an accepted cultural norm in other countries maybe it's just spreading into western countries as people learn more about it. I would think it's a bit odd at first I guess but if someone is really into yoga then why not. It's not like it affects anyone else.

falsepriest · 03/03/2018 16:29

Corner of a park? Not wanky.

Middle of Leicester Square under spotlights? Bit wanky.

onalongsabbatical · 03/03/2018 16:30

It might be. But it could also be that, especially if you're on a long haul flight, you're just looking after your body as best you know how. I did yoga on a plane in 1977, wouldn't have occurred to me that I was attention seeking or that anyone would think I was. I'd have much rather no-one noticed. But as I was a devoted yoga practitioner and teacher and on a long flight to India (much longer back then), it seemed the best thing to do.

ladybee28 · 03/03/2018 16:32

Maybe YAB a bit U, maybe not – in my experience it's usually people falling into 1 of two camps:

  1. Attention seeking, and
  2. Doesn't give a flying fart what you or anyone else thinks, and they're doing what feels good whenever the hell they want.

Yes, 1) is a bit annoying, but I'd love to see more people in the world who fall into 2), so I try not to pass judgement.

I blame that Hilaria Baldwin myself. She started all this.

goforkyourself · 03/03/2018 16:34

Oh bloody hell this has just reminded me I should've emailed a client this morning! Said client lives in the middle of nowhere, our team once turned up at his house and he was in the middle of sun salutation... stark bollock naked ShockShock

GrannyGrissle · 03/03/2018 16:34

It is only really a problem if they ahem pass wind while downward dogging or some such. I just stick to a few pelvic floor exercises in such circumstances and feel a little bit pleased with myself that no one knows what i'm doing vag of steel

ALongHardWinter · 03/03/2018 16:39

Extremely wanky imo.

I have been guilty of this Blush, but like sabbatical I was on a long flight. I went to the back of the plane (747) and did some poses in the galley. Yoga has a very real function, it’s not about showing off for MOST people, although I would agree the scenarios you’ve seen are ridiculous.

I saw a chap doing yoga in the middle of the concourse at Waterloo a few months back. He got shat on by a pigeon.

DullAndOld · 03/03/2018 16:41

yep wanky.
Once I was sitting in Gordon Square in Bloomsbury and this woman was going for yoga gold.
So show offy..

Sullabylullaby · 03/03/2018 16:41

I'd look like a woeful pillock doing yoga in public. I suppose it's a way to pass the time if you're really into it. I would find it hard not to stare surreptitiously watch.

arethereanyleftatall · 03/03/2018 16:44

I wish this sort of thing would be common so that it wouldn't look wanky.

I'm a bit of a fitness fanatic, and hate eg wasting 3 minutes standing still in a queue. I could get a hundred squats done if it were common place.

arethereanyleftatall · 03/03/2018 16:46

I wouldn't be doing It for attention if i did yoga somewhere random. I'd be doing it as exercising is better than wasting time.

fusushumi · 03/03/2018 16:48

In a waiting room?? I'm intrigued - what sort of waiting room? Doctor? physiotherapist? Smile

andijustthought · 03/03/2018 16:49

I can't tell you how ridiculous I would look doing yoga in a public place

Snowyhere2018 · 03/03/2018 16:49

I have never seen this and I live in a particularly wanky part of the country. To answer you OP, yes it's attention seeking. It reminds me of my weird SM who upon meeting us all outside a hotel we were about to have lunch in, started to do lunges and on the spot jogging whilst telling us she was a serious runner you know. Confused

HopefullyAnonymous · 03/03/2018 16:49

I saw a bloke doing yoga at kings cross the other week. He did look a bit of a plonker with his mat and tiny shorts when it was freezing cold

UnsuspectedItem · 03/03/2018 16:50

I mean I suddenly broke out into the chain cha slide queuing at the post office because all of a sudden the spirit of DJ Casper's funky tunes came upon me, I'd be grooving for myself, not anyone else, but would still look like a wanker.

A wanker with incredibly moves, but a wanker none the less.
