To love all the snow hysteria?

Just that really.

OP posts:
MaisyPops · 01/03/2018 18:11

I can only go off what my friend is telling me but small town everyone knows each other, people talk in the shops. I can't see her being irritated for no reason when people are buying for an apocalypse.

Katedotness1963 · 01/03/2018 18:17

I haven't seen any light hearted hysteria about not being able to get to Costco, or Starbucks, my friends and family are in badly affected areas.

I have seen videos of people in the heavy snow areas making the most of it and having a laugh, read the FB posts of people who are sharing posts offering to use their 4 wheel drive cars to get medical staff to and from their work, businesses who are staying open to offer homeless people somewhere out of the cold, and saw posts about people who live along the M80 who cooked pizza, wrapped it in foil and delivered that and drinks to those who were stranded in their vehicles. Does your heart good, right?

Graphista · 01/03/2018 18:19

Mimpidreams and others saying similar - we don't have the equipment or surface prep you have, or the experience (even where I am in Scotland we haven't had snow and ice etc THIS bad in over 20 years!) in addition if you are British you should know the consistency of the snow and ice isn't the same as where you are. I lived in Northern Europe for several years experiencing high snowfall etc every winter but it's a different consistency and reacts differently here - I'm no scientist but I'm guessing partially because it's not cold enough really.

Friends and family in other counties are having snow in some cases for the first time in their LIVES because those counties VERY rarely get snow FALLING let alone laying and in drifts, some areas have had to borrow gritters and snow ploughs from other areas or improvise with eg tractors

If you suddenly had weather you weren't used to and weren't geared up to cope with you'd be concerned and struggling too.

We get snow here most years at least a little and generally we crack on. Personally I'm starting to get a little nervous. I'm agoraphobic anyway but also physically disabled and get my shopping delivered online mostly with dd popping to get bits if needed but local shops IF they're open are running low on supplies and dd is also disabled so I'm really worried about her going out in this and risking a fall. Getting on for well over 1ft deep here - not exactly a light dusting!

I've also several relatives who are elderly/frail who are doing ok so far but if it goes on for more than a few days WILL be getting stuck for some issues - inc one who is insulin dependant diabetic.

There's also the fact that due to the cuts there's fewer staff, supplies of grit are low, vehicles that were no longer serviceable haven't been replaced, maintenance of vehicles isn't always being done...

So no it's not hysteria it's genuine concern for how we're going to cope - especially the most vulnerable.

And the parts of America that are ALSO not used to it struggle too

Oh dear, looks like there's snowflakes aplenty on this thread too. Biscuit

I find it quite ridiculous, but I come from Eastern Europe, where everything still works even if the snow is knee deep, and kids go to school in -20.
The things we need here are- appropriate clothing, winter tyres and salt/sand. Snow ploughs wouldnt hurt either.

MadMags · 01/03/2018 18:28

Your Eastern European country is obviously equipped and prepared to deal with that expected weather, Midnight.

So, it’s not ridiculous at all really, is it?

Graphista · 01/03/2018 18:29

Midnight0 except as has been said on the thread SEVERAL TIMES funding isn't made available for such things because snow ploughs etc are REALLY expensive and we very rarely get this kind of weather. In one of the counties I have friends it's entirely possible they could buy snow ploughs and they sit unused for over 30 years!

Blackteadrinker77 · 01/03/2018 18:29

I find it quite ridiculous, but I come from Eastern Europe

Funny, the ITV North east news has just had a Polish driver on stranded in his lorry. He said he was used to -20 degrees but has never been stuck before.

But stuck he was.

Graphista · 01/03/2018 18:32

Are these cold countries that are SO much better equipped for tropically hot conditions? To the point of long term droughts, high quality air conditioning in all buildings? Would the population "just cope" with sudden high temperatures and high humidity causing heat stroke and other heat related medical issues?

I really doubt it!

Rednailsandnaeknickers · 01/03/2018 18:34

Hope all the burns you're receiving on this thread will melt the snow for you OP Hmm
🔥🔥🔥

MyFavouriteChameleon · 01/03/2018 18:35

I think some are missing the fact that its not just snow, but cold winds causing drifting, and making it effectively much colder. Most people in the UK are NOT used to that combination, and may not be good at judging how many layers they would need to stay adequately warm out. Also due to the extreme cold there is a lot of ice as well...all that is as much a danger as the actual snow.

DarthNigel · 01/03/2018 18:35

Me too! (As long as no one is getting seriously injured). I LOVE a weather event.
I'm sitting next to the fire with my shutters closed listening to the wind and I couldn't be happier Smile

Bratsandtwats · 01/03/2018 18:40

Op has apologised. What more does everyone want? Blood?

CavoliRiscaldati · 01/03/2018 18:43

the OP so-called "apology" has been deleted for being so rude. That probably doesn't help posters warming up about the "Lighthearted" vague excuse

DarthNigel · 01/03/2018 18:45

Oh I thought the op was saying she was enjoying all the nice parts about it and everyone talking about it as opposed to taking the piss out of people panic buying bread or whatever. I'll get my coat....Smile

Blackteadrinker77 · 01/03/2018 18:46

The OP isn't even in the UK.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/03/2018 18:48

Took my freind 2 1/4 hours to do a 20 minute journey from work

Once they had been told they could leave early!!

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2018 18:50

OP was very rude. No blood required though. Grin

acornwood · 01/03/2018 18:52

Yeah hysteria that nurses and hca are making makeshift beds and haven't seen there families including babies for over 48 hours 🤔

scaevola · 01/03/2018 18:52

Op has apologised. What more does everyone want? Blood?

For most people who are not elderly, ill or homeless it is an over-reaction. But we decided to be a country that does not prepare adequately for events like this once every few years, and continue to do so in who we have voted into office over the last 40 years.

DartmoorDoughnut · 01/03/2018 18:54

@IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece I hope your neighbour is ok Flowers

GottadoitGottadoit · 01/03/2018 18:55

dismissing people dying as nothing because you are having a good day at home is pathetic

People are always dying. EVERY FUCKING DAY! Many from preventable causes. We are still allowed to enjoy ourselves for Christ’s sake!

JRTaylor80 · 01/03/2018 19:03

I completely agree with the opening post that a lot of the state and media induced reaction to this bad weather borders on hysteria, irrational emotional spasms. Most of the replies actually illustrate that perfectly.

For many areas of the country this is the heaviest accumulation of frozen water since December 2010, which people managed through but would now be designated a 'Red Warning' month.

Tippz · 01/03/2018 19:15

@GottadoitGottadoit

People are always dying. EVERY FUCKING DAY! Many from preventable causes. We are still allowed to enjoy ourselves for Christ’s sake!

No-one said you couldn't have a good time! The poster was having a go about you dismissing others misery and suffering because YOU are OK.

Very selfish.

It's OK though coz people die ALL THE TIME. EVERY FUCKING DAY.

Good job not everyone is as selfish and thoughtless as you. Hmm

Tippz · 01/03/2018 19:15

People should really stop engaging with the smug posters appearing conveniently on this thread (who are apparently not in the UK,) coming out with little sarcastic and demeaning gems like 'we get 50 foot of snow every day of the year between October and March, and still manage to walk to our jobs 50 miles away,' and 'the kids never have a day off school,' and 'we sleep naked on the front lawn' type of posts.

It has been explained to them many times WHY we are struggling like we are. And the fact that unlike them, we don't get 5 solid months a year of snow, or have the infrastructure and equipment to deal with it.

And as I said CLEARLY earlier on, a couple of people I know passed their driving tests 4 and 5 years ago, and only drove in the snow for the first time 3 months ago. THAT is how infrequent this weather is, and THAT is why it's big news, and why people are knocked sideways by it, and it IS quite severe; the temperature is freeeezing! (Not above minus 3 for 2-3 days now!)

In addition, it's very windy, and the snow is drifting. It's very dangerous at the moment. The police and emergency services are not telling everyone to stay in, just for a fucking laugh! Hmm

I just saw on the local news that 5 little lambs died from the cold. Sad And human lives have been lost too. So this weather IS a big deal, and people should not engage with the goading on this thread. That's all they are doing it for, to goad. The fact that they are still banging on about how 'pathetic' we are, after been told many times that we are not used to this weather, proves they are just goading and provoking.

Ignore them.

@bratsandtwats
(And I am not just aiming this at the OP, I am aiming at the goady goadsters calling us pathetic. They can just bore off......)
