Just that really.

OP posts:

I'm in Sweden and watching the news from the UK with bewilderment. We have snow halfway up the windows and it's -25 with a windchill of -31. And the schools are all open and the kids are playing out at playtime. People are out driving and shopping and going to work like normal. Get a grip people.

So you live in a country which deals with this every. single. year.. It is not a valid comparison. Your car's will have winter tyres and snow chains almost universally. The cold and snow is part of the culture there.

The UK is a wet and windy island but mostly mild, it isn't the norm for here.

MimpiDreams · 01/03/2018 16:36

Oh dear, looks like there's snowflakes aplenty on this thread too.

PickAChew · 01/03/2018 16:36

I'm sure it wouldn't be in California, @kursk

Willow2017 · 01/03/2018 16:37

mimpi
Maybe cos its the norm there? You have the infrastructure to deal with it year in year out?
Maybe you have snow tyres as a matter of course each winter?
Maybe everyone is used to it because thats what happens where you live?

Its not normal here, certainly not all over the country (some places yes) but not so fast and sustsined. This is a huge weather front with another one hitting it from the south. Quite unprecedented.

So your smugness is hardly justified.

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2018 16:37

YABU

And comparing the UK with countries that have snow a lot is a bit odd. Confused

Most people stockpiling and shelf clearing aren't vulnerable. They are the same people found on 24th December panicking because the shops will be closed for a day.

To me, if I take 1 bottle of milk then someone else can also have some. If i take 4 'just in case' then my actions actually mean at a time when people are told not to drive, I'm causing someone else to go without.

I should have added 'lighthearted' to the title and not used the word 'hysteria'.

I know it's serious and dangerous and there are red alerts in place.

I know it's not hilarious.

So there was actually no point in posting anything then?

Bitsy1968 · 01/03/2018 16:38

Yeah, my friend was falling over himself in hysteria, having spent 20 hours on the M80 overnight.

Sneering is really unattractive. Has anyone told you that?

EenaMinaMoe · 01/03/2018 16:38

MimpiDreams - but we don't have the infrastructure. In Canada, where my family are from, I'd be out and about with no issues, but there my car would have winter tyres/chains, there would be proper snow ploughs on the roads, people would have a proper snow shovel and salt in the house to clear the pavement.

We don't have that here and some of the roads around my part of Scotland are really not nice.

PickAChew · 01/03/2018 16:39

Snowflakes, eh?

To love all the snow hysteria?
vespertillio · 01/03/2018 16:40

In Ireland we're calling it Christmas the sequel - people have put their lights back up and are drinking mulled wine. It is hilarious www.dailyedge.ie/christmas-the-sequel-3878838-Mar2018/?utm_source=shortlink

Yes of course the whole of usa has conditions like this every year...maybe check your geography knowledge?

mustbemad17 · 01/03/2018 16:41

Mimpi fwiw i spent my first 20 years in Germany, where in 12 years of schooling I had four snow days. That's it. They get it often & have the capacity to deal with it; we always said if the German bus drivers refuse to do a run you know it's bad.
I used to have your attitude - bit of snow, the UK goes mad, pfft what a joke. But we simply don't have the same level of extreme as some countries, & our budgets are shit. Spending millions on the equipment when it will sit in a shed for years is pointless...and would snatch vital funding from elsewhere. Nothing snowflakey about it, it's about priorities.

Altho right now i'd give anything to have the German approach to snow. I went down on my arse today...being a klutz & pregnant equals nightmare 🙄🙄

Katedotness1963 · 01/03/2018 16:41

The far north of Scotland is pretty much cut off. Snow gates are closed and expected to remain that way at least until tomorrow. There's no maternity unit up there and women are expected to travel to Inverness to give birth. Hope any woman in labour is able to hold on till the roads are open again, bet that's a laugh a minute...

Niceandwarmandhot · 01/03/2018 16:42

Meh, mimpi lives somewhere that she's so bored she's watching news about the UK instead of actually having anything to do. I feel sorry for her! Wink

turnipfarmers · 01/03/2018 16:43

A relative of mine currently has a life threatening condition which is made worse by this cold weather. They are currently fretting about having had the heating on 'too much' over the last few days.

Naturally I find it all hilarious. OP, do fuck off.

Willow2017 · 01/03/2018 16:44

Oh dear, looks like there's snowflakes aplenty on this thread too.

Nope just a lot of freaking ignorance about climate, infrastructures, and geography.

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 01/03/2018 16:45

The USA has similar conditions to Sweden, business as normal here.

Um, it's 9C and sunny here in New England. The snow has almost all melted.

tinkywinky2018 · 01/03/2018 16:45

at last some sense! I've been on a thread where people were pissing themselves laughing at the very thought of listening to advice to stay in in the worst affected areas! Apparently we are stupid sheep who should go out and build a snowman. Hmm

Meanwhile, in sanity land, if the experts tell you to stay in, its for a bloody good reason and you should probably listen.

CavoliRiscaldati · 01/03/2018 16:46

Most people stockpiling and shelf clearing aren't vulnerable.
you should have seen the demographic in my supermarket at the beginning of the week!

Buying what you need for at least a week is fine, buying more than you can store and will use is wasteful and selfish.

On another note, even if an area only has a "dusting of snow", schools have to anticipate and take their staff into account. Kids might all live round the corner, but not the staff!

tinkywinky2018 · 01/03/2018 16:47

Hawaii knee deep in snow, is it? California at -20c?

Hmm
MaisyPops · 01/03/2018 16:48

CavoliRiscaldati
I agree. Common sense and some thought for others.

Schools closing is a different thing altogether. Lots of factors at play there. We are closed and have been for 2 days. We never close.

taratill · 01/03/2018 16:49

vespertillio that is brilliant. My son keeps singing christmas songs and i have to remind him it's March!

It's coming down here thick and fast and my friend wants me to go to the pub tonight. I must be a 'snowflake' as I think I'm going to decline and stay warm.

Niceandwarmandhot · 01/03/2018 16:50

Erm, it does snow in parts of California. That's why they have ski resorts Hmm
