Just that really.

OP posts:

@PickAChew I know. I drive that road 3-4 times a week and I've seen it bad, but never like it is now.

This is the main road into the village where my mam and dad live: scontent.flcy1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/28576428_10213874433467346_7796665397193676623_n.jpg?oh=0410c73819fd65ed74ed053c2b1f0d8d&oe=5B0B5D67

Flutterbyeee · 01/03/2018 16:51

Well that went well OP.

tinkywinky2018 · 01/03/2018 16:52

Erm, it does snow in parts of California. That's why they have ski resorts hmm

the pp said the USA (as a whole) was the same as Sweden right now. California having a few ski resorts does not make the assertion any less idiotic.

The80sweregreat · 01/03/2018 16:52

Red alerts etc.not hysteria at all. I hate the fact ds1 drives and has to go out in it.
Its caused chaos

Kursk · 01/03/2018 16:54

tinkywinky2018

Ok if you want to be detailed about it. I am talking the 23 states above the the 43rd parallel.

WonderLime · 01/03/2018 16:54

I'm wondering how hilarious it will be if there's not enough gas to heat your house tomorrow. Biscuit

Kursk · 01/03/2018 16:55

YouCantGetHereFromThere

Back in December January it was colder in the UK

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/03/2018 16:55

I'm relieved that almost everyone has said what I was going to say!

GrandTheftWalrus · 01/03/2018 16:55

I went out earlier and it's freezing cold and snowing adding to the foot or so that's already here. It's horrible.

I've not seen my child since monday as she's stuck at my parents house.

haggisaggis · 01/03/2018 16:56

Sweden seemed to be struggling a bit with it a few days ago here

YouCantGetHereFromThere · 01/03/2018 16:56

But those US states do slow down significantly for snow. There are snow days built into the school calendar. The police advise people not to travel. Many businesses tell people to stay home. Town halls close.

Things are not 'business as usual' during snowstorms.

Kursk · 01/03/2018 16:56

Hawaii knee deep in snow, is it? California at -20c?

Current snow depths in California range between 2”-79”

ThanksForAllTheFish · 01/03/2018 16:57

Well yes and no. On the surface the panic buying of 10 loves and 40 pints of milk is hysteria but lots of genuine issues arising from the snow.

I was supposed to have jury duty- pre recorded message said I was still required in today despite the red weather warning. Spent all last night stressing about childcare and travel as school cancelled. (Actually posted a thread about it). This morning no public transport running at all and local taxi company had 3 drivers in the road and fully booked up for 6+ hours. No one in court answering telephones so I was stressing about the 6 mile walk on the snow via another mile walk to drop DD off. Eventually admitted defeat and decided not to go even at the risk of a 1k Fine. Lucky they updated message as 12:30 we didn’t need to go in.

Our local shop was open briefly but closed due to injury of customer from snow falling off shop roof. 2 small convenience stores near by opened but out of bread / milk and dog food. People have been panicking about food and nice to see some rallying round amoungst the community. DH had to go to work today and has walked there this morning and will walk back as no busses running anywhere near my area today. I have a friend stranded in London who can’t get home. My uncle is in a care home and they have staff pulling double shifts and sleeping there overnight as no other option. They have food but supplies of certain things are running low as no deliveries. The local meals on wheels service isn’t running and elderly neighbour on the street uses this service (it’s ok she is being fed by other neighbours now). I worry about other elderly folk that don’t have this option. I have seen people stressing in Facebook re: power meters needing topped up and no shops open to put credit on keys.

crunchymint · 01/03/2018 16:57

I agree OP. Four people have died in the UK from car crashes. The risk of this weather is on the roads, to elderly and disabled people and ill people. Healthy adults not driving are being hysterical.

And getting stuck in cars is shit, but it is not grounds for hysteria. People have frozen to death in parts of Europe where they get lower temperatures than us.

tinkywinky2018 · 01/03/2018 16:58

Ok if you want to be detailed about it. I am talking the 23 states above the the 43rd parallel

And they are all as cold and snowy as Sweden, and everything is as normal today?
Nope, you have no clue at all.

ShotsFired · 01/03/2018 16:58

There a lot of very po-faced replies on this thread, and I suspect a fair amount of deliberate misunderstanding too.

I took @crackerjacket's post to be lighthearted and meaning all the yummies who were bleating on FB that they couldn't get to Costa; or the ones in very lightly affected areas being overly dramatic about it and panic buying like it was end of days although if it were, that seems a bit pointless.

Let's face, it there are loads of total drama llamas out to make it ALL ABOUT THEM even when it isn't. I can't imagine OP was sat there laughing her head off about pregnant women falling over and old people dying for fuck's sake.

QualityDogWrangler2 · 01/03/2018 16:58

Perhaps you don’t have much snow in your area, but others do.
It’s not very nice to drive in, I took a change of clothes, blankets, shovel food etc today, as I couldn’t avoid driving, lots of crashed lorries on the motorway

Sparklingbrook · 01/03/2018 16:58

I have not actually seen any 'hysteria' TBH.

k2p2k2tog · 01/03/2018 16:58

My DH, teenage DD and I have been snowed in since Tuesday night.

We're snowed in. My neighbour has just spent an hour trying to clear the road, drove 20 feet and got stuck. We have at least a foot of snow which doesn't look like melting any time soon. Nothing is moving. Shops, restaurants and everywhere else is closed. Schools shut until after the weekend. Glasgow airport closed all day.

On one hand, people "skipping" with delight because of snow are totally unhinged. You wouldn't be skipping anywhere in Central Scotland as you'd be in your wellies, a foot deep in snow.

And on the other hand, the Swedish poster can fuck RIGHT off as we're quite obviously NOT in Sweden, don't get this level of snowfall often, in fact it's a once in 20 years or more occurrence.

natureshaped · 01/03/2018 16:59

OP is BVU to have posted "I'm really enjoying all these people dying and the problems it has caused". Oh wait- she didn't say that.

Basseting · 01/03/2018 17:01

I am near the A1. The road is completely closed for the 2nd day.
I am in a cold rental (windows loose, storage heaters) with 2 kids (1 ASD) and their Dad is 40miles away and cant get across to help.
(I had foot surgery last week so I am on crutches which is a pain). The district nurses are needing the mountain rescue team to get through in parts around here which is a bit worrying.
The Red Warning is needed. The gritters are getting stuck. Only the bigger tractors are getting around. But we have food, power and hot water bottles (tv and internet) so we are better off than many and we'll wait it out (cant get out front or back doors atm, 4ft drifts).
No hysteria here but its is hard work, yes.

I do hope the pregnant lady on the ice is okqy.

crunchymint · 01/03/2018 17:01

Also sadly a homeless man was found dead, a man died going through the ice after his dog, and an elderly woman was found dead under her car - no idea why she was under her car.

Don't go out on ice, don't go out if you are elderly, homeless people being outside overnight is a national disgrace.
I live near where people died in one car crash, so yes snow is heavy and driving is the real risk. I walked to my local high street and half the shops are closed, although all the chains are still open.
If you have elderly or disabled neighbours, check they are okay.

But I do get bloody irritated by the hysteria.

lljkk · 01/03/2018 17:04

Local supermarket are saying they are running out of stock due to panic buying (but maybe they would say that rather than admit to lorries not getting thru).

These conditions are reminding a lot of my (many) childhood holidays skiing in California! 20' snowpack was normal.

Willow2017 · 01/03/2018 17:06

nature but a sweeping statememt about 'snow hysteria' when its a red weather alert is a pretty dumb statement for a post.

crunchymint · 01/03/2018 17:06

Supplies always run low when people panic buy. I saw a lorry stuck in the approach to our town centre, but it was delivering flowers, so hardly essential.
It is predicted to get warmer by the weekend, so as long as you have enough food until then, you are likely to be fine.
