AIBU to say that Tony Blair should go away

Tony Blair is in Brussels today to convince EU leaders to try and stop Brexit.

TheEgoHasLanded

Whether you support Brexit or not, Tony Blair still has not got the message that we do not are what he thinks, he has no credibility in the UK and he does not represent us.

Tony Blair and his wife should go live in America where they think he is great and leave us Brits in peace. We are not interested in anything he has to say. We do not trust him. He is still trying to find himself a role as big as his over inflated ego.

I wanted Blair to go away in 1997, and I am a bit pissed off that he is still around, along with his gurning wife. Couldn't stand either of them then, and I loathe Blair now.

Bluelady · 01/03/2018 13:58

What has Major lied about?

frankchickens · 01/03/2018 14:06

What has Major lied about?

Well aside from the affair he had with Edwina Currie which must've involved a fair bit of lying to Norma and others - all before he began lecturing us about morality and values with his "back to basics" speech.

Then there was this, just before the 1992 election -
"I've made the pledge in the past. We have no plans and no need to extend the scope of VAT."

and we all know how that ended.

He's a liar like almost all politicians.

Bluelady · 01/03/2018 14:12

OK. Whatever.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 01/03/2018 14:13

IMO he is one step off Hitler for his actions resulting in the persecution of Muslims in the Middle East

I've never read anything so ridiculous in my life.

frankchickens · 01/03/2018 14:17

Also, Pop Quiz, who's election leaflet is this from ?

""Above all, the EEC takes away Britain's freedom to follow the economic policies we need." That and the cost of the "indefensible" farm policy "are just two of the reasons for coming out. Only a Labour government will do it."

and who said the following in an election address -

"We will negotiate withdrawal from the EEC which has drained our natural resources and destroyed our jobs."

frankchickens · 01/03/2018 14:17

OK. Whatever.

Fine, I get that you don't care that Major's a liar - but you did ask.

I don't particularly like TB but i think he's right.

Unfinishedkitchen · 01/03/2018 14:24

So how come Blair can never be forgiven for Iraq but nobody ever says anything about Churchill diverting food from India and causing the starvation of 4 million Indians? No British PM ever been squeaky clean. Why is Blair always singled out by some as being uniquely evil?

Theworldisfullofidiots · 01/03/2018 14:24

Major was my MP. He and Norma are still active locally and still do lots locally. Yes he had an affair and yes she decided to stay with him.
He's actually a nice man, I'd rather have him than most of them. At least he is putting country first.
And I'm not a Tory.

BigEthel · 01/03/2018 14:27

Poverty gap grew under his reign

Nope. Pensioner and child poverty dropped under Blair and the credit crunch was mostly due to greedy bankers selling sub-prime mortgages.

But I can see by your comment about EU immigrants that you really don't care about facts.

LakieLady · 01/03/2018 14:28

I wish the war-mongering lackey would take his millions, go and live abroad in tax exile and never darken the shores of Europe, especially the UK, ever again. And he can take the sycophant Mandelson with him.

John Major's speech yesterday was measured and statesmanlike. Blair's efforts just smack of self-importance and a sense of entitlement.

It may sound ridiculous coming from a lifelong Labour supporter, but I think I despise Blair more than I despised Thatcher. At least we knew she didn't give a toss about ordinary people, Blair stitched them up as badly while pretending to be on their side.

We'd be living in a very different Britain if John Smith hadn't died and made the rise of Blair possible.

Phew, I feel better for getting that off my chest. Grin

frankchickens · 01/03/2018 14:31

He's actually a nice man

Well I'm glad he's reformed because he wasn't at all nice when he did this -

People have short memories

LakieLady · 01/03/2018 14:31

You may dislike him, but everything he says on this matter is correct. And he is absolutely right and entitled to speak out about the danger this poses to peace in Northern Ireland.

The words of a war criminal are tainted. It's bloody rich of him, of all people, to pontificate about risks to peace anywhere.

TemporarySign · 01/03/2018 14:34

Blair's a divisive figure who did some good and a great deal of harm. Oddly enough the good was the left-wing stuff: education, surestart. The bad was the right-wing stuff: running down the public sector's public ethos, encouraging privatisation, wrecking council funding, encouraging propaganda and spin over actual substance (and Iraq). I'm sure there's messages in there.

Still I'll be very grateful for anyone who can help sort out this absolute fiasco of Brexit.

TemporarySign · 01/03/2018 14:35

It was in his time that the Northern Ireland peace agreement was made. I'd imagine he knows what he's talking about there.

birdsdestiny · 01/03/2018 14:36

To answer a pp' s question, he is so hated because he won 3 elections. The Labour party ( who I have voted for since I was 18) have always been uncomfortable with winning elections.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 01/03/2018 14:37

Tbh if you say everyone who's had an affair is a liar and unfit for office then there wouldn't be many left there at all. And if you applied that to the ordinary workplace the country would go down in a day.

frankchickens · 01/03/2018 14:43

Tbh if you say everyone who's had an affair is a liar and unfit for office then there wouldn't be many left there at all. And if you applied that to the ordinary workplace the country would go down in a day.

True - hence quoting the lie about VAT - but he is still a liar.

Troutfin · 01/03/2018 15:20

Blair was wrong about Iraq but he is right about Brexit.

Troutfin · 01/03/2018 15:29

He was Prime Minister for 10 years, not so long ago. Why would anyone think his opinion on Brexit is irrelevant, even if you hate him for Iraq? He probably has a better grasp of the issues and workings of the UK and EU than Mogg, Johnson or Corbyn. Same for John Major, who doesn't get the credit he deserves for his part in the NI peace process. So YABU.

Beetlejizz · 01/03/2018 15:31

It doesn't matter that he's a lying, warmongering cunt, he's still right.

Desperatelyseekingsun · 01/03/2018 15:45

Don't much like the man, never voted for him, was one of many millions who though Iraq would be a very bad thing (probably underestimated how bad). But he is an ex prime minister of our country with an in depth knowledge about issues such as GFA and has every right to speak, it is up to others if they choose to listen.
Of the people who voted in the eu ref 48% did not vote to leave, Brexit is going to struggle to work if there isn't more meaniful engagement with this group over and above "Shut up, we won, get over it". Concerns have to be listened to and meanifully addressed.

KidLorneRoll · 01/03/2018 15:55

He's right. Any idiot can see the whole thing is going to be a disaster.
