This is all the snow where I live and everyone’s got their knickers in a twist! Talks of possible school closures and one of the departments in my husbands work have been told to take Friday off because of the “adverse weather” 😂😂😂

OP, you're slagging off the weather warnings, with no knowledge whatsoever, and slagging off people who are heeding them.

Your words:

we haven’t been affected by it yet and the likelihood is that we won’t be massively affected by it over the coming couple of days

And you're an Amber Zone.

Now you're flouncing because you've been challenged on your amateur Wincey Willis efforts.

GrandTheftWalrus · 28/02/2018 22:37

I'm on the edge of a red warning area. Been snowing all day. No buses or trains. All shops have shut early (apart from indians)

It's worse than 2010. And I don't see it getting any better tomorrow

MummySparkle · 28/02/2018 22:37

There's a foot of snow in my garden and there's a steep hill down between us and any of the surrounding villages / towns. We can't safely drive anywhere, even with a 4 x 4 as it doesn't have chains / snow tyres. Up hill is fine but we just can't stop. DH managed to drive to a small shop today to get some supplies. There was nothing there, presumably because everybody has been panic buying stuff despite living within walking distance of that shop It's on a main road so will get re-stocked once that gets cleared, but it wasn't clear when DH went out.

So YANBU to tell people to calm down a little bit, because frankly panicking isn't going to do anything. But YABU if you think people who are living in the middle of nowhere shouldn't be mildly concerned Grin

(Yes it is a little sore sitting on this fence) Wink

I think OP made it clear she was talking about her area and that this was lighthearted.

You should have posted that photo, OP. Smile

We have very little snow here and I am one of those people who is not at all proportionate. I've been fretting about my rabbits. And feeling a bit guilty because my father (a farmer) was telling me about one year where the ground froze for months and they had to work round the clock to save the livestock. meanwhile, I'm getting anxious about whether my furry ones need a hot water bottle.

Thecatfromjapan you've took your rabbits indoors haven't you?

thecatfromjapan · 28/02/2018 22:53

MarsBars No. We're checking them but it's not actually that cold here. The hutch is well-lagged and the sleeping area is stuffed with straw.

Timetogetup0630 · 28/02/2018 22:54

thecatfromjapan I brought my rabbit in tonight. He is in a box in the utility room with the radiator turned off. Bunnies don't like it to be too warm, so only put them in a cool place if you bring them in.

thecatfromjapan · 28/02/2018 22:54

Why? do you think that's not enough? I'm worried now!

Timetogetup0630 · 28/02/2018 22:55

cat if more than one bun they will just snuggle up together and be quite cozy. It's -6C here.

thatcoldfeeling · 28/02/2018 22:56

We haven't had any snow settle here yet, however we just had a very dramatic email from work telling us that we will be closed tomorrow. The forecast suggests that it will be pretty bad as of tomorrow but it did seems slightly OTT when read while looking out of the window at not a single flake.

nooddsocksforme · 28/02/2018 22:56

There are may people who have bee stuck on the M80 near us - some since 2pm and police have said they are likely to be there overnight. Folks who live beside the motorway are handing out blankets and flasks but may drivers are apparently low on fuel and have no food .I'm sure they are not feeling calm - and neither will be the family waiting for them www.facebook.com/windywilson.weather.roads/?hc_ref=ARSr0xaVnEnKSPzOgpfQGUPVhehKuUmYTIpZ1iMdrJP_2Lm5p0SdELGI8a7hRam5IqY

manicinsomniac · 28/02/2018 22:56

I think, while it's obviously serious in some areas of the country, there is some definite over reaction and scare mongering going on.

The BBC weather site for example - in my area it's got heavy snow symbols covering the whole night and either light or heavy snow for most of tomorrow and a lot of Friday. But, if you scroll down slightly, you see that the chance of precipitation is never more than 6% tonight and no more that 25-30% tomorrow. So, yes, if H20 comes out of the sky it will come as snow but there's not much chance that it will. So why keep the doom and gloom (or exciting depending on your perspective) symbols up?!

We had good, proper snow in December. It was awesome and there was a day when we couldn't really travel (but it was a Sunday). Real snow is an inconvenience but it's lots of fun. The horrible, flaky/gritty little inch or so that the East Mids/South East crossover area has got stuck with this time is just inconvenient without any of the fun.

LineysShanks · 28/02/2018 22:57

It's the cold and wind chill, not just snow.

Like Alpaca said upthread, we only rarely have these extreme weather events so there's minimal Investment in infrastructure. In countries where freezing conditions and snow happen every year, for months, there is massive investment.

So yeah, Norway, of course things are mostly fine. It's predictable and sustained. The South of England, say - every 8 years for a few days - not so much.

MissEliza · 28/02/2018 22:58

I agree Op. I went to uni in Massachusetts. You should see the snow they get there without batting an eyelid. My ds's sixth form college is closed tomorrow. We still haven't had any real snow where we are. It just melts away. Why they're closing I've no idea:

PickAChew · 28/02/2018 23:00

It's different if you live up in the Pennines or something, where snow is a regular winter event. Local authorities in those areas can justify investing in stuff to deal with snow, and they get extra money in their central government grant because of it

Yep, co Durham have an organised system of route priorities, high Pennines, low Pennines and so on. They even use a #TwitterGritter hashtag to communicate their priorities.

It would be absurd to expect an LA somewhere like Essex to do the same.

LineysShanks · 28/02/2018 23:01

MissEliza but that was a predictable annual event?

yolofish · 28/02/2018 23:04

My ds's sixth form college is closed tomorrow. We still haven't had any real snow where we are. It just melts away. Why they're closing I've no idea
maybe because they are on a hill and therefore they cant guarantee buses will be able to get up and down? no point getting there if students cant get home again...

RoseWhiteTips · 28/02/2018 23:08

I am in the red zone and it certainly is a concern. What an idiotic response.

codswallopandbalderdash · 28/02/2018 23:08

Christ it's bad where I am. Went into work this morning, dropped DS at nursery thinking not as bad as it was made out to be. By 1pm moved to red alert and sent home. took 1.5 hours to travel a mile. Still snowing now.

MarsBarsAreShrinking · 28/02/2018 23:08

It's -7 here at the moment and the wind is vicious but if you think it's not too bad where you are Japan then I'm sure they'll be fine. I'd bring them in myself if it was me but as I said it's really cold here.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/02/2018 23:09

It looks like fairyland here but there is a high price to pay.

thecatfromjapan · 28/02/2018 23:14

Mars Just been out to check. I think they're genuinely OK. It's the wind that's chilly and the hutch is out of that. It sounds incredibly cold where you are.
